The LC phase behavior of ternary mixtures of the two corresponding branched non-ionic surfactants 1,3-bis-(methoxy-tetraoxyethylene)-2-propoxy-tetradecane (Y-surfactant) and 1,3-bis-(heptyloxy)-2-propoxyoctaoxyethylene mono-methyl ether (V-surfactant) and water were studied by polarizing microscopy. The two branched surfactants, which have different molecular geometries but nearly the same hydrophilic-lipophilic volume ratio, exhibit extremely different phase behavior in binary surfactant/water systems. For the ternary mixtures of Y- and V-surfactant and water we found-according to established packing models-a continuous stabilization of the cubic and hexagonal phases and a destabilization of the lamellar phase with increasing amount of Y-surfactant. On the other hand, we observed a thermal stabilization of the lamellar phase. The maximal transition temperatures of the lamellar phase pass a maximum with increasing amount of Y-surfactant.  相似文献

A non ionic surfactant with a rigid rod-like hydrophobic group has been synthesized. Owing to the molecular geometry of the surfactant only lamellar micelles are formed in aqueous solution.This system exhibits a lyotropic nematic phase (N L), which for the first time has been found for a binary non ionic surfactant/water system.Herrn Professor Dr. H.-G. The synthesis of liquid single crystal hydrogels (“LSCH”) in suitable molds offers an innovative concept to realize bifocal contact‐ or intraocular‐lenses. LSCH combine the properties required for applications as bifocal ophthalmic lenses: the soft and water‐containing hydrogel enables oxygen permeation and exhibits high birefringence due to the liquid crystalline phase structure built up by rigid rod‐like amphiphiles. Via a photo‐initiated crosslinking reaction of aqueous solutions of monomeric lyotropic liquid crystalline amphiphiles in the macroscopically ordered liquid crystalline state, we obtain optically uniaxially ordered and transparent LSCH. It is well known that, with respect to the director, nematic elastomers can be macroscopically aligned by uniaxial mechanical fields. Extending this method to a chiral smectic C elastomer, depending on the experimental set-up either smectic layer orientation or director orientation parallel to the stress axis occurs. In order to align the director and the smectic layers a biaxial mechanical field (e.g. shear field) consistent with the phase symmetry has to be used to achieve a macroscopically uniform orientation of the untwisted smectic C* structure.  相似文献

Polarized Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is employed to study the segmental orientation and mobility of liquid-crystalline elastomers (LCEs) with a monodomain structure in response to external mechanical fields parallel and perpendicular to the initial nematic director. The mean orientation and the molecular order parameter of the different molecular moieties referring to the mesogen, the spacer and the network are analyzed in detail. Parallel stretch leaves the mean orientation of the different molecular moieties and its molecular order parameter nearly uninfluenced. Perpendicular stretch results in a threshold-like dependence: for elongation ratios λ ⩽ λc = 1.3 (10 mol% crosslinker density), respectively λ ⩽ λc = 1.6 (5 mol% crosslinker density) no change of the mean orientation and the molecular order parameters is observed, while for λ ≥ λc all molecular units reorient and their molecular order parameters are strongly decreased. The present studies give no indications that the reorientational dynamics of the network and the mesogens differ as long as the elongation ratio is smaller than λc.  相似文献

The electrooptical properties of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers were investigated for the case that the mesogenic units were attached laterally rather than longitudinally to a flexible chain backbone via flexible spacer units. The experimental finding is that these polymers display unusual electrooptical properties within the isotropic phase in the neighborhood of the transition into the nematic phase. The polymers are characterized by the occurrence of a fast and a slow electrooptical response both of which show a critical divergence of the Kerr constant and the Kerr relaxation time. In addition, they show deviations between the rise and the decay values of the Kerr constants and in certain cases also of the Kerr relaxation times. Finally an overshoot of the induced birefringence following a sudden stepwise increase of the applied electric field has been found for one of these polymers. All these features can be accounted for on the basis of a newly developed theoretical approach that considers the particular dipolar and optical polarization configurations of these polymers.  相似文献
