Isothiazoles XI. Diels-alder adducts of 4-isothiazolin-3-one 1-oxides and 1,1-dioxides

4-Isothiazolin-3-one 1-oxides and 1,1-dioxides react with a variety of cyclic and acyclic dienes to afford cycloaddition products.     

13C-NMR. Spectroscopy of Naturally Occuring Substances. XLII. Conformational analysis of quebrachamine-like indole alkaloids and related substances

The ¹³C shifts of 16α- and 16β-substituted derivatives of quebrachamine, 14,15-dehydroquebrachamine, cleavamine, 15,20α-dihydrocleavamine and 15,20β-dihydrocleavamine are determined and correlated with possible conformations of these tetracycles. The method of analysis of the C(16) configuration of these compounds, which emanated from this study, is used for the determination of the configuration of the site of coupling of vindoline and cleavamine β-chloroindolenine.     

Theoretical investigations of Fe porphyrins. V. Low-lying electronic states of bisammineporphinatoiron(III)

Ab initio CI calculations are reported on the lowest doublet, quartet, and sextet states of [Fe^III(P)(NH₃)₂]⁺. The low-spin ground state is calculated as (d_xy² (d_π)³ with d_xy(d_π)⁴ higher by 0.15 eV. The near-ir bands at ～1 eV observed in low-spin ferriheme proteins are attributed to (π → d_π) transitions. The lowest high-spin state is ⁶A_1g, and the near-ir transitions of the high-spin ferriheme proteins observed at ～1.2 eV are attributed to higher ⁶[tripsextet] excited states [i.e., ring triplet, metal sextet]. The 30-ps “triplet” transient populated with low quantum yield observed in laser-flash studies on Fe^III(TPP)CI [TPP = tetrapbenylporphyrin] may be an ¹[tripsextet] state.     

Matrix elements for spin-adapted configurations

It is shown that the turn-over rule which is used to simplify matrix elements between spin-projected Slater determinants may also be used to simplify formation of matrix elements between any orthonormal set of spin-coupled Slater determinants. The coefficients for the spin-coupling may then be chosen freely to reduce the number of important configurations in the secular equation.     

Cryptates Sphériques. Synthèse et Complexes d'Inclusion de Ligands Macrotricycliques Sphériques

Spherical Cryptates. Synthesis and Inclusion-Complexes of Spherical Macrotricyclic Ligands A general strategy for the synthesis of spherical macrotricyclic ligands has been developed. Four spherical cryptands, SC - 24 , SC - 25 , SC - 26 and SC - 27 have been obtained by this route. The synthesis and cation-complexing properties of these compounds are described in detail. Stability constants and cation exchange rates of the spherical cryptates obtained with alkali and alkaline-earth cations have been determined. Highly stable complexes are formed by SC - 24 ; the Rb⁺ and Cs⁺ cryptates of SC - 24 are the most stable complexes of these cations known to date. The size of the intramolecular cavity affects the complexation selectivity. The cation exchange rates are very slow, and the corresponding free energies of activation are even larger than, for macrobicyclic cryptates of similar stability. Both the high complex stabilities and the high activation energies required for cation exchange indicate a marked ‘spherical cryptate effect’ resulting from the highly connected nature of the molecular architecture of spherical macrotricyclic ligands.     

A general method for the preparation of N-monosubstituted-3-isothiazolamines

We describe here a novel and general high yield method for the synthesis of 3-alkyl and arylaminoisothiazoles, a previously unknown group of isothiazoles, by the reaction of ammonia with 3-halo-2-alkylisothiazolium salts. The mechanism of the reaction probably involves a ring opening followed by a recyclization to the title compounds.     

Synthesis and study of block copolycondensates containing polysiloxane and unsaturated polyester blocks in the chain. I. Poly(unsaturated esters-b-siloxanes) with blocks linked by Si?O?C bonds

Block copolycondensates containing both unsaturated polyester and polysiloxane blocks have been prepared by copolycondensation of reactive oligomers; the bonds between the blocks are either Si? O? C or Si? C. This article is devoted to poly(ethylene adipate-co-maleate-b-siloxane) with Si? O? C bonds. The reactive oligomers are studied, before or after modification, by tonometry, end-group titration, GPC, and NMR. Contrary to the block copolycondensates of the same kind described in the literature, those reported in this work have high molecular weights (five block of each kind). These high-molecular-weight block polycondensates have been obtained by a careful study of the parameters of the polycondensation.     

Monitoring of ethanol during fermentation using a microbial biosensor with enhanced selectivity

The present study is concerning the construction of ferricyanide-mediated Gluconobacter oxydans cell ethanol biosensor. The size exclusion effect of a cellulose acetate membrane was used for elimination of glucose interferences during ethanol assays in real samples. A typical response time of the biosensor was 13 s with a high sensitivity of 3.5 microA mM(-1). The microbial biosensor exhibits a very low detection limit of 0.85 microM and a wide linear range from 2 to 270 microM. The operational stability was excellent. During 8.5 h of repetitive ethanol assays, no decrease in the sensor sensitivity was observed. The biosensor was successfully used in the off-line monitoring of ethanol fermentation with a good agreement with HPLC measurements (R(2)=0.998).
