Heteroclinic orbits between rotating waves of semilinear parabolic equations on the circle

We investigate heteroclinic orbits between equilibria and rotating waves for scalar semilinear parabolic reaction-advection-diffusion equations with periodic boundary conditions. Using zero number properties of the solutions and the phase shift equivariance of the equation, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a heteroclinic connection between any pair of hyperbolic equilibria or rotating waves.     

Local Entropy Conditions in Transonic Potential Flow Problems

The transonic potential flow problem is handled as a variational problem over a closed convex set which is given by a bound for the gas velocity and by a local entropy condition. It can be shown that the minimum problem has a solution though the functional need not be convex and the given set is not compact. Furthermore, the convergence of an approximation method (KATCHANOV'S method) for the solution to the corresponding variational inequality is proved.     

Quasiparticle bandstructures of covalent semiconductors and their surfaces

The exchange-correlation self-energies and quasiparticle shifts are calculated for band states of covalent materials (diamond, silicon) and their (001) 2×1 surface in order to solve the bulk and surface band-gap problem of the LDA. The screening properties are described by a model dielectric function taking into account the spatial nonlocality in the surface case assuming specular electron reflection. The wave functions are expanded in terms of localized orbitals. The quasiparticle bandstructures obtained are in reasonable agreement with experimental results.

Summary Interpolatory quadrature formulae consist in replacing by wherep _f denotes the interpolating polynomial off with respect to a certain knot setX. The remainder may in many cases be written as wherem=n resp. (n+1) forn even and odd, respectively. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of the Peano kernelP _X (t) forn for the quadrature formulae of Filippi, Polya and Clenshaw-Curtis.

     

Preparation of micro- and nanopatterns of polymer chains grafted onto flexible polymer substrates

In this work a simple novel method for preparing micro- and nanoscale patterns of polymer chains grafted onto flexible polymer substrates is described. A combination of the two techniques of radiation grafting and "grafting-from" has been made. This combination makes it possible to prepare grafted structures having micro- or nanoscale lateral dimensions that are determined by the electron beam or X-ray irradiation patterns used. The height of the grafted features can be controlled by the irradiation dose or such grafting reaction conditions as time, temperature, or monomer concentration. Our first results for nanopatterned samples demonstrate resolution comparable to those of other polymer-based lithography processes.
