Reflection of keV-energy electrons from multilayer surfaces

The energy spectra of electrons reflected from multilayer targets are studied theoretically and experimentally. A self-consistent theory of electron reflection from multilayer surfaces is constructed. Simple analytical models of electron reflection that illustrate the feasibility of the depth profiling of multilayer targets are presented. The energy spectra of electrons normally incident on Nb/Si and Nb/Al/Nb/Si targets and reflected from them at an angle of 45° to the normal are taken. A method for the depth profiling of such structures is elaborated.     

Giant nonlinear refraction in gold island films

Giant nonlinear refraction has been experimentally observed in gold island films. The real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ⁽³⁾(ω: ω,-ω, ω) reaches a value of about 10^?4 CGS units. The mechanism of nonlinearity of the refractive index can be associated with the resonance enhancement of the factor of the local optical field at the pump wavelength due to the excitation of surface plasmons, as well as with the contribution of the heating of conduction electrons in an ensemble of metal particles.     

Regularities of the slow discharge when several reacting particles participate in the limiting step

On the basis of the absolute reaction rates theory and the Brønsted principle, the equation of the slow discharge theory has been derived for the conditions when several reacting particles participate in one slow step of complex stoichiometry. The experimental data for the kinetics of the electroreduction of anions BrO₄^? and BrO₃^? on the Hg-, Sb- and Bi-electrodes are in complete agreement with that equation.     

Kilovolt electron backscattering

We present here the results of experiments measuring the energy spectra of electrons backscattered from massive homogeneous Al, Cu, Pd and W targets, with the probing beam primary energyE ₀ varying from 4–32 keV. We have developed the electron backscattering theory based on solving the Boltzmann equation boundary problem by the invariant imbedding method and calculation of inelastic energy loss with the modified Landau function. Comparison of the calculated with experimental data shows that this expanded theory adequately describes the electron reflection processes.     

Electrical conductivity and luminescence of metal-organic nanocomposites

We presented the results of experimental study of electrical and luminescence properties of planar nanocomposites based on gold island films and layers of efficient organic luminophores — aluminum (III) 8-hydroxyquinolinate (Alq₃) and europium β-diketonates [Eu(DBM)₃ bath, Eu(DBM)₃ phen, and Eu(DBM)₃]. The mechanisms of electroluminescence of such hybrid systems are discussed and the processes of luminescence excitation in the organic component of nanocomposites are considered in detail. It is shown that the spectral characteristics of europium β-diketonates are controlled by the Eu³⁺ ion fluorescence. The proposed mechanisms of nanocomposite electroluminescence are confirmed by the results of measurements of cathodoluminescence spectra of organic luminophores.
