Uniform oriented matroids without the isotopy property

We give an easy general construction for uniform oriented matroids with disconnected realization space. Organolithium, organomagnesium and organozinc compounds react with α,α'-difunctional enynes: HOCH₂CCCHCHCH₂Y (Y  OH, OCH₃, N(CH₃)₂). This reaction produces one or two derivatives, according to the nature of the metallic group: mono- or di-functional allenes, mono- or di-functional dienes.     

Photophysics of monodisperse platinum-acetylide oligomers: delocalization in the singlet and triplet excited states

A series of monodisperse Pt-acetylide polymers that contain the [-CC-(p-C6H4)-CC-(t-Pt(PBu3)2)-]n repeat unit has been prepared for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. The photophysical properties of the series provide information concerning the relationship between the oligomer length and delocalization in the singlet and triplet excited states of the pi-conjugated electron system. The results imply that the singlet excited state is delocalized over approximately 6 repeat units; however, the triplet state is considerably more localized. The triplet energy is almost invariant with oligomer length, but the phosphorescence spectra and triplet nonradiative decay rates indicate that the electron-vibrational coupling in the triplet state decreases with increasing oligomer length.     

Practical aspects of carbon content determination in carburized steels by EPMA.

The carbon contents in carburized steels were investigated by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) for a range of carbon levels in the solid solution less than 1 wt%. This article describes the difficulties encountered with the classic analytical procedure using the k ratio of X-ray intensities and the phi(rhoz) model. Here, a suitable calibration curve method is presented with emphasis on the metallographic study of standard specimens and on the carbon decontamination of samples.     

A new strategy for the synthesis of optically active benzylic fluorides and corresponding five-membered heteroaromatic analogues

Benzylic fluorides, as well as five-membered heterocycles, have been obtained in high ee’s through cycloaddition reactions starting from easily accessible optically active propargylic fluorides.     

A novel four-component reaction for the synthesis of functionalised dihydropyrimidines

In a multi-component reaction (MCR) of a phosphonate, nitriles, aldehydes and isocyanates, N3-functionalised dihydropyrimidines can be synthesised efficiently via a Horner-Emmons/aza Diels-Alder pathway.     

Rapid, low pressure, and simultaneous ion chromatography of common inorganic anions and cations on short permanently coated monolithic columns

Short permanently coated reversed-phase silica based monolithic columns have been investigated for the rapid separation of inorganic anions and cations. One 2.5 x 0.46 cm column was permanently coated with didodecyldimethylammonium (DDAB), for anion analysis; and a second 5.0 x 0.46 cm column was coated with dioctylsulphosuccinnate (DOSS), for cation analysis. The use of a single combined eluent of 2.5 mM phthalate/1.5 mM ethylenediamine, at flow rates of between 4.0 and 8.0 mL/min, resulted in the rapid separation of 8 anions (in under 100 s) and 5 cations (in under 100 s) on the above columns when used individually, with detection limits for common anions ranging from approximately 0.25 to 5 mg/L, and between 2.5 and 50 mg/L for alkaline earth metals, by direct and indirect conductivity detection, respectively. However, with both columns subsequently connected in parallel, with the eluent delivered using a flow splitter from a single isocratic pump, the simultaneous analysis of anions and cations was also possible, based on a single conductivity detector. The potential of this system for the rapid, complete screening of water samples for multiple common anions and cations is shown.     

Intramolecular Diels-Alder and tandem intramolecular Diels-Alder/1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles

The scope of intramolecular Diels-Alder and a novel tandem Diels-Alder/1,3-dipolar cycloaddition cascade of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles is disclosed. In the cases examined, the tandem cycloadditions construct three new rings with formation of four new C-C bonds and set all six stereocenters about a central six-membered ring in a single step including three contiguous and four total quaternary centers without a trace of a second diastereomer.
