Coincidence experiments with electrons

Coincidence experiments with electrons provide new information on the structure of nucleons and nuclei. Using new CW accelerators, kinematic regions can be explored with high precision which have not been accessible previously. The equipment and the necessary steps in the analysis of (e,ep) experiments will be discussed and illustrated with new data taken at the MAMI facility.Lectures given at the Indian-Summer School on Electron Scattering of Nucleons and Nuclei, Prague (Czech Republic), September 1994.     

Expeditive synthesis of homochiral fused tri- and tetrazoles-piperazines from β-amino alcohols

N-Cyanomethyl and N-propargyl β-amino alcohols are chlorinated with SOCl₂ and treated with NaN₃ in DMSO. A substitution/cycloaddition process affords in good yields, with high diastereoselectivity and a regioselectivity depending on the substitution pattern of the starting amino alcohol, fused tri- and tetrazoles-piperazines. These heterocycles were further lithiated with n-BuLi at the benzylic position and reacted diastereoselectively with a range of electrophiles.     

Development of a practical solid-phase synthesis approach to 1,3,5-triazepan-2,6-diones

1,3,5-Triazepan-2,6-diones are a class of conformationally restricted heterocycles derived from dipeptides. With the aim to develop a general and practical method useful for library production, three polymer-assisted syntheses, all based on a catch and release approach, have been evaluated and compared. The method involving a Hofmann rearrangement of N-Boc dipeptide carboxamides and subsequent trapping of the isocyanate on polymer-supported N-hydroxysuccinimide (PS-HOSu) was found to be the most reliable and versatile, allowing rapid access to the 1,3,5-triazepan-2,6-dione skeleton.     

Investigation of proton-proton short-range correlations via the 12C(e,e'pp) reaction

We investigated simultaneously the 12C(e,e'p) and 12C(e,e'pp) reactions at Q2=2 (GeV/c)2, xB=1.2, and in an (e, e'p) missing-momentum range from 300 to 600 MeV/c. At these kinematics, with a missing momentum greater than the Fermi momentum of nucleons in a nucleus and far from the delta excitation, short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations are predicted to dominate the reaction. For (9.5+/-2)% of the 12C(e,e'p) events, a recoiling partner proton was observed back-to-back to the 12C(e,e'p) missing-momentum vector, an experimental signature of correlations.     

Light scattering study of dispersion and attenuation of hypersound in adamantane

The Brillouin scattering techniques have been used to measure the velocity dispersion of hypersonic acoustic waves in the “high temperature” disordered cubic phase of adamantane. Shear waves, characteristic of the C₄₄ elastic constant, show no significant dispersion. Longitudinal waves propagating in the (001) plane show strong velocity dispersion. The measures have been performed at the same temperature T = 295.7 K. Using a classical single relaxation time model for the dispersion as a function of frequency at temperature T, the L-mode data have been correctly fitted.The importance of the dispersion $\text{(C}{}_{\mathrm{\infty }}\text{? C}{}_{\mathrm{o}}\text{)}\text{C}{}_0$ for the elastic constants is 20% for C₁₁, 51% for C₁₂ #1% for C₄₄ and ?2.8% for $\text{(C}{}_{11}\text{? C}{}_{12}\text{)}\text{2}$. The fitted relaxation time is τ ? 9 × 10^?11 sec.     

Pump−probe experiments at the TEMPO beamline using the low‐α operation mode of Synchrotron SOLEIL

The SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source is regularly operated in special filling modes dedicated to pump–probe experiments. Among others, the low‐α mode operation is characterized by shorter pulse duration and represents the natural bridge between 50 ps synchrotron pulses and femtosecond experiments. Here, the capabilities in low‐α mode of the experimental set‐ups developed at the TEMPO beamline to perform pump–probe experiments with soft X‐rays based on photoelectron or photon detection are presented. A 282 kHz repetition‐rate femtosecond laser is synchronized with the synchrotron radiation time structure to induce fast electronic and/or magnetic excitations. Detection is performed using a two‐dimensional space resolution plus time resolution detector based on microchannel plates equipped with a delay line. Results of time‐resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, circular dichroism and magnetic scattering experiments are reported, and their respective advantages and limitations in the framework of high‐time‐resolution pump–probe experiments compared and discussed.     

Zero-temperature properties of randomly self-interacting polymers

We study the zero-temperature behavior of several simple models for randomly self-interacting polymers in one and 1+1 dimensions. Results are based on exact enumeration and closed-form expressions.
