An integer goal programming model for hazardous waste treatment and disposal

The improper handling and disposal of hazardous wastes cause threats to human health and the environment. One reason for the improper handling and disposal of these wastes is that not much consideration is usually given to the logistical aspects of hazardous waste systems. In this paper an integer goal programming model is developed that takes into consideration the multiple goals and needs of many groups involved in managing and planning hazardous waste systems. The model can easily be implemented and can be used to address many of the issues related to facility location, recycling, treatment, and disposal of hazardous wastes.     

Ab initio and DFT calculations for the structure and vibrational spectra of cyclopentene and its isotopomers

Ab initio calculations using the MP2/cc-pVTZ basis set do an excellent job of predicting the inversion barrier (247 vs. 232 cm⁻¹) and dihedral angle (26°) of cyclopentene. DFT calculations also do an excellent job of predicting the vibrational frequencies of the d₀, d₁, d₄, and d₈ isotopomers. They have also allowed the reassignments of several of the vibrational frequencies.     

Influences of nanoparticles and chain length on thermodynamic and electrical behavior of fluorine liquid crystals

Hydrogen-bonded polar nematic liquid crystal series with the general formula nOBAF (n = 7—12) is studied. The mesomorphic characterization is demonstrated through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The complexes with short alkyl chains (n=7, 8) present a wide nematic range and monotropic smectic F mesophase, whereas the longer alkyl chain (n=10—12) analogues show high melting and low clearing mesomorphic liquid crystals. The thermal range of the mesophase and the birefringence increase with chain length decreasing. Furthermore, the effect of the nanoparticles (LiNbO₃) on the thermal and the electrical behavior of 8OBAF are investigated. The presence of LiNbO₃ nanoparticles increases the conductivity and reduces the resistivity of the complex.     

Homotopy analysis method for fractional IVPs

In this paper, the homotopy analysis method is applied to solve linear and nonlinear fractional initial-value problems (fIVPs). The fractional derivatives are described by Caputo’s sense. Exact and/or approximate analytical solutions of the fIVPs are obtained. The results of applying this procedure to the studied cases show the high accuracy and efficiency of the approach.     

On the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform by the use of an optimized Legendre polynomials

A method for inverting the Laplace transform is presented, using a finite series of the classical Legendre polynomials. The method recovers a real valued function f(t) in a finite interval of the positive real axis when f(t) belongs to a certain class and requires the knowledge of its Laplace transform F(s) only at a finite number of discrete points on the real axis s>0. The choice of these points will be carefully considered so as to improve the approximation error as well as to minimize the number of steps needed in the evaluations. The method is tested on few examples, with particular emphasis on the estimation of the error bounds involved.     

Two minor phytoecdysteroids of the plant Silene viridiflora

Chemical investigations of Silene viridiflora (L.) yielded a new ecdysteroid, 20-hydroxyecdysone 20,22-monoacetonide-25-acetate (1), and a known ecdysteroid, 2-deoxypolypodine B-3-beta-D-glucoside (2). The elucidation of the chemical structures was established by 1D and 2D NMR experiments.     

Optical Emission and Raman Spectroscopy Studies of Reactivity of Low-Pressure Glow Discharges in Ar–O<Subscript>2</Subscript> and He–O<Subscript>2</Subscript> Gas Mixtures with Coked Catalysts

We demonstrate that low-pressure glow discharges in He–O₂ gas mixture are effective in removing carbonaceous surface layers from coked catalysts. These discharges contain a number of reactive species including O, O₃, and O₂*, and all these could contribute in the decoking process. However, an evolving understanding is that the O atoms in the discharge have a predominant role in this. A working hypothesis is that the O atoms react with the coke to form CO, CO₂ and other carbon complexes. Online measurements using emission spectra from O, H, and CO in the discharges are compared for the cases of He–O₂ and Ar–O₂ gas mixtures. Under the reported experimental conditions the estimated reactivity of the He–O₂ discharges is considerably higher compared with discharges in the Ar–O₂ gas mixture. Raman spectroscopy is used to confirm the removal of the coke from the surface of Pt/Alumina catalyst.
