Description of Stabilization of Octupole Deformation in Alternating-Parity Bands of Heavy Nuclei

The angular-momentum dependences are analyzed for parity splitting and electric dipole transitions in alternating-parity bands of heavy nuclei. It is shown that these dependences can be treated universally by employing a single parameter taken to be a critical angular momentum that characterizes the phase transition from octupole vibrations to a stable octupole deformation. Analytic expressions for parity splitting and the electric dipole transitional moment are obtained on the basis of a simple model. The results are compared with experimental data for various barium, cerium, and neodymium isotopes.

Genome sequence and analysis of the tuber crop potato

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the world's most important non-grain food crop and is central to global food security. It is clonally propagated, highly heterozygous, autotetraploid, and suffers acute inbreeding depression. Here we use a homozygous doubled-monoploid potato clone to sequence and assemble 86% of the 844-megabase genome. We predict 39,031 protein-coding genes and present evidence for at least two genome duplication events indicative of a palaeopolyploid origin. As the first genome sequence of an asterid, the potato genome reveals 2,642 genes specific to this large angiosperm clade. We also sequenced a heterozygous diploid clone and show that gene presence/absence variants and other potentially deleterious mutations occur frequently and are a likely cause of inbreeding depression. Gene family expansion, tissue-specific expression and recruitment of genes to new pathways contributed to the evolution of tuber development. The potato genome sequence provides a platform for genetic improvement of this vital crop.     

The effects of sample preparation methods on the variability of the electrospray ionization response for model drug compounds

A post-column infusion system was developed in order to analyze suppression of electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry response in the presence of endogenous plasma interferences. By enabling direct detection of these interfering components, this experimental system was used to analyze the ability of several common extraction procedures to remove endogenous plasma components that cause changes in the ESI response of model drug substances. Methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) liquid-liquid, Oasis and Empore solid-phase, and acetonitrile (ACN) protein precipitation sample preparation methods were tested using the post-column infusion system. In all cases, ACN protein precipitation samples showed the greatest amount of ESI response suppression while liquid-liquid extracts demonstrated the least. In addition, the three test compounds, phenacetin, caffeine, and a representative Merck compound, demonstrated that ESI response suppression is compound dependent. Suppression was greatest with caffeine, the most polar analyte, and the smallest for the Merck compound, the least polar analyte. Copyright 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Motion of inviscid fluid tongues and bubbles in a Hele-Shaw cell occupied by a viscoelastic fluid

Problems of steady-state motion of an inviscid fluid tongue or bubble in a Hele-Shaw cell occupied by a viscoelastic fluid are considered. The problems generalize the well-known Saffman-Taylor problems [1, 2] in the approximation in which the pressure jump on the interface between the two fluids depends on the normal velocity of the interface [4]. Theoretical prediction of latent track regression in neutrino experiment with nuclear emulsions

We try to predict the sight of neutrino interaction inside nuclear emulsion after long exposure. It is very important because regression decreases the grain density on charge particle tracks.     

Resonances and near-threshold scattering in 3,4Hedμ

Elastic and inelastic scattering cross-sections in the ^3,4Hedμ systems near the dμ threshold are calculated. The isotopic effect and strong energy dependence in ⁴Hedμ are found. The reason for these peculiarities is the near-threshold pole of the ⁴Hedμ scattering amplitude. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Ultracold Scattering and Universal Correlations

Particle-dimer scattering below and above the three-body threshold is studied using Faddeev differential equations. Correlations between the observables are shown and some analogies between three-nucleon and three-atom systems are discussed.
