In this paper, a new vectorial boundary element method is introduced and applied to the modal analysis of dielectric waveguides with piecewise homogeneous refractive indexes. The procedure, which is free of spurious modes, determines the full field distribution from the longitudinal fields at the refractive index boundaries. Singular kernels are evaluated through series solutions while the electric field discontinuity at corners is accommodated through either a grid refinement technique or a semianalytic approach. Our formalism generates propagation constants and modal field distributions for several representative refractive index profiles with far higher accuracy than standard finite-difference or finite-element procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, a perfectly matched layer (PML) absorber, recently introduced into the electromagnetic propagation literature by Berenger [J. Comput. Phys. 114, 185-200 (1994)], is adapted for use with both paraxial and wide-angle acoustic parabolic equations (PEs). Our procedure incorporates an imaginary component into the transverse coordinate that mimics the introduction of a fictitious absorber on the edge of the computational grid. Use of such an impedance-matched layer can significantly reduce spurious reflections compared to physical absorbing layer methods and thus allows a smaller number of boundary points to be employed in PE calculations. Numerical results obtained with several higher-order propagator approximations confirm that such impedance-matched absorbers efficiently eliminate reflections.  相似文献

Although fiber spinning is known to reduce polarization mode dispersion (PMD) effects in optical fibers, relatively few studies have been performed of the dependence of the reduction factor on the strength of random birefringence fluctuations. In this paper, we apply a general mathematical model of random fiber birefringence to sinusoidally spun fibers. We find that while even in the presence of random birefringence perturbations the maximum reduction of PMD is still obtained when the phase matching condition is satisfied, the degree of PMD reduction and the probability distribution function of the DGD both vary with the random birefringence profiles.  相似文献

We demonstrate numerically that calculations of the Auger coefficient of 1.3 μm InGaAsP are appreciably affected by the assumed screening parameters, especially at low temperatures and high carrier densities. We also generalize earlier theories of Auger processes to prove that the screening length should be set to infinity in such calculations.  相似文献

The authors have analyzed several approximations for the reflection coefficient of an electric field incident on the interface between two inhomogeneous dielectric media. While existing expressions agree with exact results in certain limits, realistic waveguides with discontinuous refractive index changes are often more accurately modeled by dividing the incoming electric field into segments coinciding with the intervals over which the interface is continuous, and subsequently superimposing the reflection from each segment.<>  相似文献
