ZnSe sintered films: Growth and characterization

The II-VI compound semiconductor, ZnSe having wide band gap between 2.58 and 2.82 eV is a promising material for use in photovoltaic devices, blue light emitting diodes and laser diodes. Several methods have been used to prepare ZnSe thin films. We have deposited ZnSe films on ultra-clean glass substrate by sintering technique. The optical, structural and electrical properties of ZnSe thin films have been examined. The optical band gap of these films is studied using reflection spectra in wavelength range 325-600 nm and structure of these films is studied using XRD. The DC conductivity of the films was measured in vacuum by two-probe technique.Sintering is a very simple and viable method compared to other intensive methods. The results of the present investigation will be useful in characterizing the material ZnSe for its applications in photovoltaics.     

Total syntheses of naturally occurring antiviral indolosesquiterpene alkaloids,xiamycins C–F via Csp3–H functionalization

Concise total syntheses of naturally occurring antiviral indolosesquiterpene alkaloids, xiamycin C (2a), D (2b), E (2c) and F (2d), have been achieved via a late-stage oxidative δ-Csp³–H functionalization of an advanced pentacyclic enone intermediate 8. This strategy takes advantage of ipso-nitration of naturally occurring abietane diterpenoids to synthesize o-bromo nitroarene derivative 11. A Suzuki–Miyaura coupling of 11 with phenylboronic acid followed by Cadogan''s ring closure provided a modular approach to a carbazole ring required for a functionalized pentacyclic core of indolosesquiterpene alkaloids.

Enantioenriched enone 8 was synthesized via three key transformations: ipso-nitration of abietane diterpenoids to furnish o-bromo nitroarene 11, Suzuki coupling with phenylboronic acid, and Cadogan''s reductive ring closure to craft a carbazole ring.     

A Bluetooth Based Sensor Network for Civil Infrastructure Health Monitoring

Communicating with sensors has long been limited either to wired connections or to proprietary wireless communication protocols. Using a ubiquitous and inexpensive wireless communication technology to create Sensor Area Networks (SANs) will accelerate the extensive deployment of sensor technology. Bluetooth, an emerging, worldwide standard for inexpensive, local wireless communication is a viable choice for SANs because of its inherent support for some of the important requirements – low power, small form factor, low cost and sufficient communication range. In this paper we outline an approach, centered on the Bluetooth technology, to support a sensor network composed of fixed wireless sensors for health monitoring of highways, bridges and other civil infrastructures. We present a topology formation scheme that not only takes into account the traffic generated by different sensors but also the associated link strengths, buffer capacities and energy availability. The algorithm makes no particular assumptions as to the placement of nodes, and not all nodes need to be in radio proximity of each other. The output is a tree shaped scatternet rooted at the sensor hub (data logger) that is balanced in terms of traffic carried on each of the links. We also analyze the scheduling, routing and healing aspects of the resulting sensor-net topology.     

Catalytic Enantioselective 1,3‐Alkyl Shift in Alkyl Aryl Ethers: Efficient Synthesis of Optically Active 3,3′‐Diaryloxindoles

Reported is the first organocatalytic asymmetric 1,3‐alkyl shift in alkyl aryl ethers for the synthesis of chiral 3,3′‐diaryloxindoles using a chiral Brønsted acid catalyst. Preliminary results showed that each enantiomer of the 3,3′‐diaryloxindole, and a racemic mixture, showed different antiproliferative activities against HeLa cell lines by using an MTT assay.
