On the equitability of multiply-connected monolayered cyclofusene

Multiply-connected monolayered cyclofusene (MMC) is a fused hexacyclic system with an exterior region and at least two interior empty regions called holes, as in figure 1. Each hexacyle has either: (a) two edges belonging to an exterior boundary and at least one hole, or (b) two edges belonging to boundaries of at least two holes. Let G be the graph of a given MMC. We show that G is equitable if and only if the set of vertices belonging to three hexacycles is equitable.     

Polymeric catalysts. IX. Cobalt complexes of polyureas based on bipyridine pyridine and crown ether for aldol condensation

We report herein studies of Co(OAc)₂ and related transition metal compounds which serve as catalysts for aldol condensations when complexed with bipyridine, triphenyl phosphine, and crown ether. A comparison has been made with polymeric complexes of cobalt(II), which serve the same purpose. Cobalt complexes of built-in polyureas based on bipyridine and crown ether as well as those immobilized to polystyrene by triphenylphosphine and poly(4-vinyl pyridine) are also reported.     

Enhancement of Stress Tolerance in the Polyhydroxyalkanoate Producers without Mobilization of the Accumulated Granules

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)], a polymer belonging to the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) family, is accumulated by numerous bacteria as carbon and energy storage material. The mobilization of accumulated P(3HB) is associated with increased stress and starvation tolerance. However, the potential function of accumulated copolymer such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB-co-3HV)] remained unknown. In this study, Delftia acidovorans DS 17 was used to evaluate the contributions of P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) granules during simulated exogenous carbon deprivation on cell survival by transferring cells with PHAs to carbon-free mineral salt medium supplemented with 1 % (w/v) nitrogen source. By mobilizing the intracellular P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HV) at 11 and 40 mol% 3HV compositions, the cells survived starvation. Surprisingly, D. acidovorans containing P(3HB-co-94 mol% 3HV) also survived although the mobilization was not as effective. Similarly, recombinant Escherichia coli pGEM-T::phbCAB _Cn (harboring the PHA biosynthesis genes of Cupriavidus necator) containing P(3HB) granules had a higher viable cell counts compared to those without P(3HB) granules but without any P(3HB) mobilization when exposed to oxidative stress by photoactivated titanium dioxide. This study provided strong evidence that enhancement of stress tolerance in PHA producers can be achieved without mobilization of the previously accumulated granules. Instead, PHA biosynthesis may improve bacterial survival via multiple mechanisms.     

Room-temperature Tm, Ho:LuLiF(4) laser with a novel quasi-end-pumping technique

A novel diode-pumped, efficient, quasi-end-pumping scheme that uses two lens ducts to achieve homogeneous pumping in a gain medium was proposed and evaluated. With this technique, room-temperature laser action at a pulse repetition frequency up to 20 Hz was demonstrated in 5%Tm, 0.5%Ho:LuLiF(4), which we grew by the Czochralski method. At 10 Hz a long-pulse laser output energy in excess of 24 mJ and a slope efficiency with respect to the incident pump energy of 10.7% were obtained.     

Improved synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymers by mutant Cupriavidus necator using the PHA synthase gene of Chromobacterium sp. USM2 with high affinity towards 3HV

Unlike polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) copolymers, the controlled and efficient synthesis of PHA terpolymers from triglycerides and fatty acids are yet to be established. This study demonstrates the production of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymer with a wide range of 3HV monomer compositions from mixtures of crude palm kernel oil and 3HV precursors using a mutant Cupriavidus necator PHB⁻4 transformant harboring the PHA synthase gene (phaC) of a locally isolated Chromobacterium sp. USM2. The PHA synthase of Chromobacterium has an unusually high affinity towards 3HV monomer. P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymers with 3HV monomer composition ranging from 2 to 91 mol% were produced. Generation of 3HHx monomers was affected by the concentration and feeding time of 3HV precursor. P(3HB-co-24 mol% 3HV-co-7 mol% 3HHx) exhibited mechanical properties similar to that of common low-density polyethylene. P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymers with a wide range of 3HV molar fraction had been successfully synthesized by adding lower concentrations of 3HV precursors and using a PHA synthase with high affinity towards 3HV monomer.     

Biosynthesis and characterization of novel polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers with high elastic property by Cupriavidus necator PHB4 transformant

We attempted to synthesize novel polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) containing new 3-hydroxy-4-methylvalerate (3H4MV) monomer from the transformed strain of Cupriavidus necator PHB⁻4 harboring the PHA synthase gene of Chromobacterium sp. USM2 (phaC_Cs). Novel PHA containing SCL and MCL monomers were successfully synthesized from crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) and isocaproic acid. Results showed that P(3HB-co-1 mol% 3HV-co-3 mol% 3H4MV-co-18 mol% 3HHx) possessed higher thermal stability, higher elastomeric behavior at room temperature and higher ductility than the P(3HB-co-5 mol% 3HHx). The novel PHA film was found to possess an interesting rubber-like elasticity and flexibility property which has not been reported. The soil surface degradation study showed that the novel PHA film was degraded faster than the 3HB homopolymer and copolymer with 5 mol% of 3HHx.     

Spectral beam combining of 2 μm Tm fiber laser systems

Output beams from three independently frequency-stabilized thulium master-oscillator power-amplifier fiber laser systems were spectrally combined using a plane-ruled metal diffraction grating. Two laser channels were frequency-stabilized with guided mode resonance filters and the third was stabilized using a plane-ruled metal diffraction grating. The systems had output wavelengths between 1984 and 2015 nm, each with a spectral width of 100-450 pm and output powers between 40-120 W. The combined beam had powers up to 49 W and was 32% efficient with respect to the launched pump power.     

A generalization of a theorem of Ore

Let (K,v)$(K,v)$ be a discrete rank one valued field with valuation ring _Rv$R_v$. Let L/K$L/K$ be a finite extension such that the integral closure S   of _Rv$R_v$ in L   is a finitely generated _Rv$R_v$-module. Under a certain condition of v  -regularity, we obtain some results regarding the explicit computation of _Rv$R_v$-bases of S, thereby generalizing similar results that had been obtained for algebraic number fields in El Fadil et al. (2012) [7]. The classical Theorem of Index of Ore is also extended to arbitrary discrete valued fields. We give a simple counter example to point out an error in the main result of Montes and Nart (1992) [12] related to the Theorem of Index and give an additional necessary and sufficient condition for this result to be valid.     

Pulsed laser action in Tm,Ho:LuLiF/sub 4/ and Tm,Ho:YLiF/sub 4/ crystals using a novel quasi-end-pumping technique

A number of good quality thulium and holmium-codoped LuLiF/sub 4/ and YLiF/sub 4/ single crystals were successfully grown by the Czochralski crystal growth method under a CF/sub 4/ atmosphere. Using a novel diode-pumped, quasi-end-pump scheme incorporating two lens ducts, pulsed laser action is achieved in 5%Tm, 0.5% Ho:LuLiF/sub 4/ and 5%Tm, 0.5% Ho:YLiF/sub 4/ crystals, at various pulse repetition frequencies and temperatures. At 10 Hz and at an operating temperature of 273 K, slope efficiencies (optical to optical efficiencies) with respect to the incident pump energies of 12.9% (9.2%) and 7.4% (5.2%) were demonstrated in the grown Tm, Ho:LuLiF/sub 4/ and Tm, Ho:YLiF/sub 4/ crystals, respectively. Free running laser output energies in excess of 30 mJ (LuLiF/sub 4/) and 17 mJ (YLF) were measured.
