We report Monte Carlo simulations of a system of rigid zigzag-shaped molecules that demonstrate that simple excluded-volume interactions are sufficient to produce a fluid tilted lamellar [smectic C (SmC)] liquid crystal phase. The molecules are composed of three rigidly linked hard spherocylinders arranged in a zigzag fashion. By varying the zigzag angle we have mapped out the whole phase diagram as a function of pressure and zigzag angle Psi. For Psi between 35 degrees and 80 degrees our model simulation exhibits the SmC phase. This is the first conclusive evidence where steric interactions arising out of molecular shape alone induce the occurrence of the SmC phase for a wide range of zigzag angles. For smaller Psi, a transition from tilted crystal to crystal is observed.  相似文献

Experiments and computer simulations demonstrate that water spontaneously fills the hydrophobic cavity of a carbon nanotube. To gain a quantitative thermodynamic understanding of this phenomenon, we use the recently developed two phase thermodynamics method to compute translational and rotational entropies of confined water molecules inside single-walled carbon nanotubes and show that the increase in energy of a water molecule inside the nanotube is compensated by the gain in its rotational entropy. The confined water is in equilibrium with the bulk water and the Helmholtz free energy per water molecule of confined water is the same as that in the bulk within the accuracy of the simulation results. A comparison of translational and rotational spectra of water molecules confined in carbon nanotubes with that of bulk water shows significant shifts in the positions of the spectral peaks that are directly related to the tube radius.  相似文献

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images coupled with many learning techniques have been developed to diagnose retinal disorders. This work aims to develop a novel framework for extracting deep features from 18 pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNN) and to attain high performance using OCT images. In this work, we have developed a new framework for automated detection of retinal disorders using transfer learning. This model consists of three phases: deep fused and multilevel feature extraction, using 18 pre-trained networks and tent maximal pooling, feature selection with ReliefF, and classification using the optimized classifier. The novelty of this proposed framework is the feature generation using widely used CNNs and to select the most suitable features for classification. The extracted features using our proposed intelligent feature extractor are fed to iterative ReliefF (IRF) to automatically select the best feature vector. The quadratic support vector machine (QSVM) is utilized as a classifier in this work. We have developed our model using two public OCT image datasets, and they are named database 1 (DB1) and database 2 (DB2). The proposed framework can attain 97.40% and 100% classification accuracies using the two OCT datasets, DB1 and DB2, respectively. These results illustrate the success of our model.  相似文献

We study the structure of carboxylic acid terminated neutral poly(propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer from generations 1-6 (G1-G6) in a good solvent (water) by fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We determine as a function of generation the structural properties such as radius of gyration, shape tensor, asphericity, fractal dimension, monomer density distribution, and end-group distribution functions. The sizes obtained from the MD simulations have been validated by small angle x-ray scattering experiment on dendrimer of generations 2-4 (G2-G4). A good agreement between the experimental and theoretical value of radius of gyration has been observed. We find a linear increase in radius of gyration with the generation. In contrast, Rg scales as approximately Nx with the number of monomers. We find two distinct exponents depending on the generations, x=0.47 for G1-G3 and x=0.28 for G3-G6, which reveal their nonspace filling nature. In comparison with the amine terminated poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer, we find that Rg of Gth generation PETIM dendrimer is nearly equal to that of (G+1)th generation of PAMAM dendrimer as observed by Maiti et al. [Macromolecules 38, 979 (2005)]. We find substantial back folding of the outer subgenerations into the interior of the dendrimer. Due to their highly flexible nature of the repeating branch units, the shape of the PETIM dendrimer deviates significantly from the spherical shape and the molecules become more and more spherical as the generation increases. The interior of the dendrimer is quite open with internal cavities available for accommodating guest molecules, suggesting the use of PETIM dendrimer for guest-host applications. We also give a quantitative measure of the number of water molecules present inside the dendrimer.  相似文献

Dynamics of water molecules in the grooves of DNA are of great interest both for practical (functionality of DNA) and fundamental (as examples of confined systems) interest. Here the authors employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to understand varying water dynamics at the minor and the major grooves of a 38 base-pair long DNA duplex in water. In order to understand and quantify the diversity in the nature of hydrogen bond due to many hydrogen bond donors and acceptors present in the four bases, they have undertaken study of hydrogen bond lifetime (HBLT) correlation functions of all the specific hydrogen bonds between the base atoms and water molecules. They find that the HBLT correlation functions are in general multiexponential, with the average lifetime depending significantly on the specificity and may thus be biologically relevant. The average hydrogen bond lifetime is longer in the minor groove than that in the major groove by almost a factor of 2. Analysis further shows that water hydrogen bonds with phosphate oxygen have substantially shorter lifetimes than those with the groove atoms. They also compute two different orientational time correlation functions (OTCFs) of the water molecules present at the major and the minor grooves and attempt to correlate OTCF with HBLT correlation function. The OTCFs in the minor groove exhibit three time scales, with the time constant of the slowest component one to two orders of magnitude longer than what is observed for bulk water. A slow component is also present for the major groove water but with shorter time constant. Interestingly, correlation between reformations allowed HBLT correlation function [C(HB)(t)] and the OTCF markedly deviates from each other in the grooves, indicating enhanced rigidity of water molecules in the grooves.  相似文献

An experimental setup is designed to investigate the convective drying of moist object experimentally. All the design data, components of setup, materials and specifications are presented. Transient moisture content of a rectangular shaped potato slice (4 × 2 × 2 cm) is measured at different air temperatures of 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C with an air velocity of 2 m/s. Two different drying rate periods are observed. Results are compared with available results from literature.  相似文献

An asymmetric synthesis of densely functionalized 7–11‐membered carbocycles and 9–11‐membered lactones has been developed. Its key steps are a modular assembly of sulfoximine‐substituted C‐ and O‐tethered trienes and C‐tethered dienynes and their Ru‐catalyzed ring‐closing diene and enyne metathesis (RCDEM and RCEYM). The synthesis of the C‐tethered trienes and dienynes includes the following steps: 1) hydroxyalkylation of enantiomerically pure titanated allylic sulfoximines with unsaturated aldehydes, 2) α‐lithiation of alkenylsulfoximines, 3) alkylation, hydroxy‐alkylation, formylation, and acylation of α‐lithioalkenylsulfoximines, and 4) addition of Grignard reagents to α‐formyl(acyl)alkenylsulfoximines. The sulfoximine group provided for high asymmetric induction in steps 1) and 4). RCDEM of the sulfoximine‐substituted trienes with the second‐generation Ru catalyst stereoselectively afforded the corresponding functionalized 7–11‐membered carbocyles. RCDEM of diastereomeric silyloxy‐substituted 1,6,12‐trienes revealed an interesting difference in reactivity. While the (R)‐diastereomer gave the 11‐membered carbocyle, the (S)‐diastereomer delivered in a cascade of cross metathesis and RCDEM 22‐membered macrocycles. RCDEM of cyclic trienes furnished bicyclic carbocycles with a bicyclo[7.4.0]tridecane and bicyclo[9.4.0]pentadecane skeleton. Selective transformations of the sulfoximine‐ and bissilyloxy‐substituted carbocycles were performed including deprotection, cross‐coupling reaction and reduction of the sulfoximine moiety. Esterification of a sulfoximine‐substituted homoallylic alcohol with unsaturated carboxylic acids gave the O‐tethered trienes, RCDEM of which yielded the sulfoximine‐substituted 9–11‐membered lactones. RCEYM of a sulfoximine‐substituted 1,7‐dien‐10‐yne showed an unprecedented dichotomy in ring formation depending on the Ru catalyst. While the second‐generation Ru catalyst gave the 9‐membered exo 1,3‐dienyl carbocycle, the first‐generation Ru catalyst furnished a truncated 9‐membered 1,3‐dieny carbocycle having one CH2 unit less than the dienyne.  相似文献
