Proton-exchanged LiNbO/sub 3/ optical waveguides using stearic acid

Proton-exchanged optical waveguides have been fabricated in z-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ using a new proton source: stearic acid. These waveguides were characterized optically and were found to exhibit a step index profile with Delta n=0.118 measured at 0.633 mu m. The propagation losses were typically around 1.5 dB/cm, and the diffusion constant and the activation energy for the proton-exchange process were measured to be 5*10/sup 6/ mu m/sup 2//h and 69 kJ/mol, respectively.<>     

Calabi's diastasis function for Hermitian symmetric spaces

In this paper we study the Calabi diastasis function of Hermitian symmetric spaces. This allows us to prove that if a complete Hermitian locally symmetric space (M,g) admits a Kähler immersion into a globally symmetric space (S,G) then it is globally symmetric and the immersion is injective. Moreover, if (S,G) is symmetric of a specified type (Euclidean, noncompact, compact), then (M,g) is of the same type. We also give a characterization of Hermitian globally symmetric spaces in terms of their diastasis function. Finally, we apply our analysis to study the balanced metrics, introduced by Donaldson, in the case of locally Hermitian symmetric spaces.     

Proton-exchange optical waveguides in Z-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ using toluic acid

Proton-exchanged planar waveguides were demonstrated in Z-cut LiNBO/sub 3/ using toluic acid as a new organic proton source. These waveguides exhibit a propagation loss of around 1 dB/cm, and a step refractive index profile with an index increase of 0.124 measured at 0.663 mu m. The diffusion rate was found to be lower than those obtained using the popular benzoic and phosphoric acids.<>     

Helical coordination polymers and cyclic dimers formed from heteroleptic thioether-dipyrrinato copper(II) complexes

Heteroleptic copper complexes containing an acetylacetonato ligand and a thioether derivatized dipyrrinato ligand are shown to form oligomers and polymers in the solid state.     

Berezin quantization of homogeneous bounded domains

We prove that a homogeneous bounded domain admits a Berezin quantization.     

Synthesis of 2D Germanane (GeH): a New,Fast, and Facile Approach

Germanane (GeH), a germanium analogue of graphane, has recently attracted considerable interest because its remarkable combination of properties makes it an extremely suitable candidate to be used as 2D material for field effect devices, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis. Up to now, the synthesis of GeH has been conducted by substituting Ca by H in a β‐CaGe₂ layered Zintl phase through topochemical deintercalation in aqueous HCl. This reaction is generally slow and takes place over 6 to 14 days. The new and facile protocol presented here allows to synthesize GeH at room temperature in a significantly shorter time (a few minutes), which renders this method highly attractive for technological applications. The GeH produced with this method is highly pure and has a band gap (E_g) close to 1.4 eV, a lower value than that reported for germanane synthesized using HCl, which is promising for incorporation of GeH in solar cells.

Uniqueness of balanced metrics on holomorphic vector bundles

Let E→M$E\to M$ be a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold (M,ω)$(M,\omega )$. We prove that if E$E$ admits a ω$\omega$-balanced metric (in X. Wang’s terminology (Wang, 2005 [3])) then it is unique. This result together with Biliotti and Ghigi (2008) [14] implies the existence and uniqueness of ω$\omega$-balanced metrics of certain direct sums of irreducible homogeneous vector bundles over rational homogeneous varieties. We finally apply our result to show the rigidity of ω$\omega$-balanced Kähler maps into Grassmannians.
