A novel metal-insulator-metal structure for field-programmabledevices

A metal-insulator-metal (MIM) capacitor structure has been developed for use in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) as a voltage-programmable link (VPL). The structure relies on a combination of a refractory metal and aluminum as the lower electrode, and either a similar combination or aluminum alone as the top electrode. The insulator is prepared by means of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). It comprises a sandwich of nearly stoichiometric silicon dioxide interposed between two like layers of silicon-rich silicon nitride. The structure has displayed characteristics desirable for use in emerging FPGA technology, including high density, low on-resistance, reduced capacitance, and low programming voltage     

Studies of the kinetics of the reduction of chromate by glutathione and related thiols

The reduction of chromate by glutathione, its mono- and diethyl esters, -cysteine, 2-mercapto-propionic acid and mercapto-succinic acid has been studied. The empirical rate law k_obs = ab[Thiol]²/(1 + b[Thiol]) is obeyed by all of these thiols, at neutral pH. No evidence could be obtained for a first-order pathway in glutathione under these conditions. These observations are used to comment on the stability of intermediates potentially important in explaining chromate toxicity.     

Optically amplified first window systems experiments

A diode pumped, commercially packaged, thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifier (TDFFA) operating in the region of 0.8 μm has been characterized. The unit is capable of producing large small signal gains, low noise figures and high saturated output powers. A power amplifier slope efficiency of 62% has been achieved at 810 nm. The same TDFFA unit was used in a series of systems experiments, at data rates of 310 Mb/s and 1.2 Gb/s, in the first telecommunications window. The results of this work indicate that data can be transmitted over ≈10 km lengths of both singlemode and standard transmission fiber, while still allowing significant margin to split the signal to a number of customers. The application of the TDFFA could therefore have significant benefit for future LAN/MAN type systems architectures involving large signal splits to customer's premises     

Controlled vesicle self-assembly in microfluidic channels with hydrodynamic focusing

Traditional liposome preparation methods are based on mixing of bulk phases, leading to inhomogeneous chemical and/or mechanical conditions during formation; hence liposomes are often polydisperse in size and lamellarity. Here we show the formation of liposomes that encapsulate reagents in a continuous two-phase flow microfluidic network with precision control of size from 100 to 300 nm by manipulation of liquid flow rates. We demonstrate that by creating a solvent-aqueous interfacial region in a microfluidic format that is homogeneous and controllable on the length scale of a liposome, we can facilitate the fine control of liposome size and polydispersity.     

The reactivity, as electrogenerated bases, of chiral and achiral phenazine radical-anions, including application in asymmetric deprotonation

Radical-anions, electrochemically generated in aprotic solvent from C(2) symmetric homochiral phenazine derivatives, act as chiral electrogenerated bases (EGBs) in the desymmetrisation by selective deprotonation of a prochiral epoxide (3,4-epoxy-2,3,4,5-tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide); the anion produced is trapped by mesitoic anhydride. The phenazines may be recovered in high yield by air oxidation. Enantiomeric excesses are modest (8-34%) but this is to our knowledge the first demonstration of such stereoselective electrochemically-initiated deprotonation. The reactivity of phenazine radical-anions as EGBs has also been explored by measurements of the rates of proton transfer; the prochiral epoxide was found to have a kinetic acidity similar to that of the methyltriphenylphosphonium cation.     

Comparison of diatomics-in-molecules and simple valence-bond potential surfaces for FH2

The method of diatomics-in-molecules (DIM) is applied to the FH₂ system. With spin—orbit interaction neglected, all elements of the 24 × 24 hamiltonian matrix are tabulated as analytic functions of the six diatomic fragment potential curves. It is found that neglect of off-diagonal 8 × 8 blocks in the DIM hamiltonian matrix leads to an energy expression for the ground 1 ²A′ level which is identical to the valence-bond formula used by Blais and Truhlar in dynamical studies of the F + D₂ reaction. The ²A″ excited level from DIM theory is identical to the result derived by Blais and Truhlar, without neglect of the 8 × 8 off-diagonal blocks. The DIM and simple valence-bond energies are compared numerically for noncollinear geometries.     

Sequential versus direct multiphoton absorption

We present results of exact calculations on a three-level Morse oscillator modeling HF which suggest that multiphoton absorption proceeds by sequential single-level transitions, transitions arising from coupling between non-adjacent states being dynamically negligible. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is integrated in the Floquet formalism.     

Concise and enantioselective synthesis of the aminocyclitol core of hygromycin A

[reaction: see text] Stereoselective aminohydroxylation and dihydroxylation using osmium(VIII) oxidants enabled the short and efficient synthesis of the aminocyclitol core of hygromycin A. In addition to allowing the selective introduction of the heteroatoms N and O, the use of osmium (via an osmate ester) as a protecting group for a 1,2-glycol is also reported. This tactic allowed efficient differentiation of otherwise equivalent hydroxyl groups and allowed us to complete the synthesis in short order (14 steps) and excellent overall yield (12%).     

Efficient acyclic stereocontrol using the tethered aminohydroxylation reaction

[reaction: see text] The tethered aminohydroxylation (TA) of acyclic allylic carbamates has been achieved in a stereospecific and stereoselective manner. Unusually high levels of stereocontrol were observed in the oxidation of 1,1-disubstituted substrates.     

Tunable electronic Raman laser at 16 μm

6s–9s electronic Raman scattering in caesium vapour is used to generate tunable 16m radiation. Output energies in excess of 8 J were obtained, with peak powers in the kilowatt range.
