To assess age-related differences in benefit from masker modulation, younger and older adults with normal hearing but not identical audiograms listened to nonsense syllables in each of two maskers: (1) a steady-state noise shaped to match the long-term spectrum of the speech, and (2) this same noise modulated by a 10-Hz square wave, resulting in an interrupted noise. An additional low-level broadband noise was always present which was shaped to produce equivalent masked thresholds for all subjects. This minimized differences in speech audibility due to differences in quiet thresholds among subjects. An additional goal was to determine if age-related differences in benefit from modulation could be explained by differences in thresholds measured in simultaneous and forward maskers. Accordingly, thresholds for 350-ms pure tones were measured in quiet and in each masker; thresholds for 20-ms signals in forward and simultaneous masking were also measured at selected signal frequencies. To determine if benefit from modulated maskers varied with masker spectrum and to provide a comparison with previous studies, a subgroup of younger subjects also listened in steady-state and interrupted noise that was not spectrally shaped. Articulation index (AI) values were computed and speech-recognition scores were predicted for steady-state and interrupted noise; predicted benefit from modulation was also determined. Masked thresholds of older subjects were slightly higher than those of younger subjects; larger age-related threshold differences were observed for short-duration than for long-duration signals. In steady-state noise, speech recognition for older subjects was poorer than for younger subjects, which was partially attributable to older subjects' slightly higher thresholds in these maskers. In interrupted noise, although predicted benefit was larger for older than younger subjects, scores improved more for younger than for older subjects, particularly at the higher noise level. This may be related to age-related increases in thresholds in steady-state noise and in forward masking, especially at higher frequencies. Benefit of interrupted maskers was larger for unshaped than for speech-shaped noise, consistent with AI predictions.  相似文献

To examine spectral effects on declines in speech recognition in noise at high levels, word recognition for 18 young adults with normal hearing was assessed for low-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers or high-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers at three speech levels (70, 77, and 84 dB SPL) for each of three signal-to-noise ratios (+8, +3, and -2 dB). An additional low-level noise produced equivalent masked thresholds for all subjects. Pure-tone thresholds were measured in quiet and in all maskers. If word recognition was determined entirely by signal-to-noise ratio, and was independent of signal levels and the spectral content of speech and maskers, scores should remain constant with increasing level for both low- and high-frequency speech and maskers. Recognition of low-frequency speech in low-frequency maskers and high-frequency speech in high-frequency maskers decreased significantly with increasing speech level when signal-to-noise ratio was held constant. For low-frequency speech and speech-shaped maskers, the decline was attributed to nonlinear growth of masking which reduced the "effective" signal-to-noise ratio at high levels, similar to previous results for broadband speech and speech-shaped maskers. Masking growth and reduced "effective" signal-to-noise ratio accounted for some but not all the decline in recognition of high-frequency speech in high-frequency maskers.  相似文献

Measurements at the drives of the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) antennas indicated that the small gap between gear teeth was causing backlash at the gearboxes and elevation bullgear. Left uncorrected, backlash will deteriorate the antenna's pointing precision. At DSN, the backlash was eliminated by implementing two identical drives that impose two nonidentical torques (a.k.a. torque bias, or counter-torque). The difference between these two torques depends on the antenna load, and is shaped by the drive's electronic circuits. The paper explains the shaping principles of the circuit, and shows how the circuits can be modified to improve the antenna dynamics under external disturbances  相似文献

Sodium 10-undecenyl sulfate (SUS), sodium 10-undecenyl leucinate (SUL) and their five different mixed micelles at varied percent mole ratios were prepared. The critical micelle concentration (CMC), C20, γCMC, partial specific volume, methylene group selectivity, mobilities and elution window were determined using a variety of analytical techniques. These surfactant systems were then evaluated as novel pseudostationary phases in micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). As a commonly used pseudostationary phase in MEKC, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was also evaluated. The CMC values of SUS and SUL were found to be 26 and 16 mM, respectively, whereas the CMC of mixed surfactants was found to be very similar to that of SUL. The C20 values decreased dramatically as the concentration of SUL is increased in the mixed micelle. An increase in SUL content gradually increased the methylene group selectivity making the binary mixed surfactants more hydrophobic. Linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs) and free energy of transfer studies were also applied to predict the selectivity differences between the surfactant systems. The cohesiveness and the hydrogen bond acidic character of the surfactant systems were found to have the most significant influence on selectivity and MEKC retention. The SUS and SDS showed the strongest while SUL showed the weakest hydrogen bond donating capacity. The basicity, interaction with n and π-electrons of the solute and dipolarity/polarizability were the least significant factors in LSER model for the surfactant systems studied. Free energies of transfer of selected functional groups in each surfactant systems were also calculated and found to be in good agreement with the LSER data.  相似文献

In aortic valve stenosis (AS), heart murmurs arise as an effect of turbulent blood flow distal to the obstructed valves. With increasing AS severity, the flow becomes more unstable, and the ensuing murmur becomes more complex. We hypothesize that these hemodynamic flow changes can be quantified based on the complexity of the phonocardiographic (PCG) signal. In this study, sample entropy (SampEn) was investigated as a measure of complexity using a dog model. Twenty-seven boxer dogs with various degrees of AS were examined with Doppler echocardiography, and the peak aortic flow velocity (Vmax) was used as a reference of AS severity. SampEn correlated to Vmax with R = 0.70 using logarithmic regression. In a separate analysis, significant differences were found between physiologic murmurs and murmurs caused by AS (p < 0.05), and the area under a receiver operating characteristic curve was calculated to 0.96. Comparison with previously presented PCG measures for AS assessment showed improved performance when using SampEn, especially for differentiation between physiological murmurs and murmurs caused by mild AS. Studies in patients will be needed to properly assess the technique in humans.  相似文献

To examine spectral and threshold effects for speech and noise at high levels, recognition of nonsense syllables was assessed for low-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers and high-pass-filtered speech and speech-shaped maskers at three speech levels, with signal-to-noise ratio held constant. Subjects were younger adults with normal hearing and older adults with normal hearing but significantly higher average quiet thresholds. A broadband masker was always present to minimize audibility differences between subject groups and across presentation levels. For subjects with lower thresholds, the declines in recognition of low-frequency syllables in low-frequency maskers were attributed to nonlinear growth of masking which reduced "effective" signal-to-noise ratio at high levels, whereas the decline for subjects with higher thresholds was not fully explained by nonlinear masking growth. For all subjects, masking growth did not entirely account for declines in recognition of high-frequency syllables in high-frequency maskers at high levels. Relative to younger subjects with normal hearing and lower quiet thresholds, older subjects with normal hearing and higher quiet thresholds had poorer consonant recognition in noise, especially for high-frequency speech in high-frequency maskers. Age-related effects on thresholds and task proficiency may be determining factors in the recognition of speech in noise at high levels.  相似文献

Chaotic dynamics of respiratory sounds   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
There is a growing interest in nonlinear analysis of respiratory sounds (RS), but little has been done to justify the use of nonlinear tools on such data. The aim of this paper is to investigate the stationarity, linearity and chaotic dynamics of recorded RS. Two independent data sets from 8 + 8 healthy subjects were recorded and investigated. The first set consisted of lung sounds (LS) recorded with an electronic stethoscope and the other of tracheal sounds (TS) recorded with a contact accelerometer. Recurrence plot analysis revealed that both LS and TS are quasistationary, with the parts corresponding to inspiratory and expiratory flow plateaus being stationary. Surrogate data tests could not provide statistically sufficient evidence regarding the nonlinearity of the data. The null hypothesis could not be rejected in 4 out of 32 LS cases and in 15 out of 32 TS cases. However, the Lyapunov spectra, the correlation dimension (D2) and the Kaplan–Yorke dimension (DKY) all indicate chaotic behavior. The Lyapunov analysis showed that the sum of the exponents was negative in all cases and that the largest exponent was found to be positive.

The results are partly ambiguous, but provide some evidence of chaotic dynamics of RS, both concerning LS and TS. The results motivate continuous use of nonlinear tools for analysing RS data.  相似文献

Under certain conditions, speech recognition in noise decreases above conversational levels when signal-to-noise ratio is held constant. The current study was undertaken to determine if nonlinear growth of masking and the subsequent reduction in "effective" signal-to-noise ratio accounts for this decline. Nine young adults with normal hearing listened to monosyllabic words at three levels in each of three levels of a masker shaped to match the speech spectrum. An additional low-level noise equated audibility by producing equivalent masked thresholds for all subjects. If word recognition was determined entirely by signal-to-noise ratio and was independent of overall speech and masker levels, scores at a given signal-to-noise ratio should remain constant with increasing level. Masked pure-tone thresholds measured in the speech-shaped maskers increased linearly with increasing masker level at lower frequencies but nonlinearly at higher frequencies, consistent with nonlinear growth of upward spread of masking that followed the peaks in the spectrum of the speech-shaped masker. Word recognition declined significantly with increasing level when signal-to-noise ratio was held constant which was attributed to nonlinear growth of masking and reduced "effective" signal-to-noise ratio at high speech-shaped masker levels, as indicated by audibility estimates based on the Articulation Index.  相似文献

Word recognition in sentences with and without context was measured in young and aged subjects with normal but not identical audiograms. Benefit derived from context by older adults has been obscured, in part, by the confounding effect of even mildly elevated thresholds, especially as listening conditions vary in difficulty. This problem was addressed here by precisely controlling signal-to-noise ratio across conditions and by accounting for individual differences in signal-to-noise ratio. Pure-tone thresholds and word recognition were measured in quiet and threshold-shaped maskers that shifted quiet thresholds by 20 and 40 dB. Word recognition was measured at several speech levels in each condition. Threshold was defined as the speech level (or signal-to-noise ratio) corresponding to the 50 rau point on the psychometric function. As expected, thresholds and slopes of psychometric functions were different for sentences with context compared to those for sentences without context. These differences were equivalent for young and aged subjects. Individual differences in word recognition among all subjects, young and aged, were accounted for by individual differences in signal-to-noise ratio. With signal-to-noise ratio held constant, word recognition for all subjects remained constant or decreased only slightly as speech and noise levels increased. These results suggest that, given equivalent speech audibility, older and younger listeners derive equivalent benefit from context.  相似文献

Automated high-speed analysis of Holter tapes with microcomputers   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We have developed an automated Holtes scanning system based on two microcomputers. One is a preprocessor that detects QRS complexes and measures the QRS durations using computations of first and second derivatives. Thismicrocomputer interfaces to a secondmicro-computer that does arrhythmia analysis, logging, and reporting using R-R intervals and QRS durations. This system can process Holter tapes at 60 times real time and produce printed summaries and 24 h trend plots of several variables including heart rate and PVC count.  相似文献
