Efficient synthesis of an imidazole-substituted delta-amino acid by the integration of chiral technologies

Two methods to produce (2S)-5-amino-2-(1-n-propyl-1H-imidazol-4-ylmethyl)-pentanoic acid were investigated. Diastereoisomeric salt resolution, using the quinidine salt, gave the desired intermediate in 98% ee and 33% yield. Asymmetric hydrogenation of various substrates gave high conversions, with up to 83% ee. Integration of these two approaches via asymmetric hydrogenation of a quinidine salt substrate followed by crystallization provided the desired intermediate in 94% ee and 76% yield.     

Structure determination of a key intermediate of the enantioselective Pd complex catalyzed allylic substitution reaction

The structure of a catalytic intermediate with important implications for the interpretation of the stereochemical outcome of the palladium complex catalyzed allylic substitution with phosphino-oxazoline (PHOX) ligands is determined by liquid state NMR. The complex displays a novel structure that is highly distorted compared with other palladium eta2-olefin complexes known so far. The structure has been determined from nuclear overhauser data (NOE), scalar coupling constants, and long range projection angle restraints derived from dipole dipole cross-correlated relaxation of multiple quantum coherence. The latter restraints have been implemented into a distance geometry protocol. The projection angle restraints yield a higher precision in the determination of the relative orientation of the two molecular moieties and are essential to provide an exact structural definition of the olefinic part of the catalytic intermediate with respect to the ligand.     

In situ Fe K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure of a nitrosyl adduct of iron phthalocyanine irreversibly adsorbed on a high area carbon electrode in an acidic electrolyte

Key aspects of the microenvironment surrounding the Fe center in the nitrosyl adduct of iron phthalocyanine, [Fe(Pc)(NO)], have been elucidated from the analysis of the Fe K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of the material adsorbed on the surface of a high area carbon electrode recorded in situ, in 0.5 M H(2)SO(4). Statistical best fits to the EXAFS data place the Fe center in a five-coordinated square pyramidal configuration shifted away from the Pc plane toward the axially bound NO bent at an angle of ca. 40 degrees with respect to the normal to the Pc plane. This environment is analogous to that of Fe in the nitrosyl adduct of crystalline [Fe(TPP)], where TPP = meso-tetraphenylporphyrinato(2-), determined from X-ray diffraction.

Selective determination of cobalt using polyurethane foam and 2-(2-benzothiazolylazo)-2-p-cresol as a spectrophotometric reagent

The present work describes a selective, rapid and economical method for the determination of cobalt using the 2-(2-benzothiazolylazo)-p-cresol (BTAC) as a spectrophotometric reagent associated with a solid extraction on polyurethane foam. The BTAC reacts with Co(II) in the presence of Triton-X100 surfactant forming a green complex with maximum absorption at 615 nm. The reaction is used for cobalt determination within a pH range of 6.50-7.50, with an apparent molar absorptivity of 1.62 x 10(4) L mol(-1) cm(-1). Beer's Law is obeyed for a concentration of at least 1.60 microg ml(-1). A selective procedure is proposed for cobalt determination in the presence of Fe(II), Hg(II), Zn(II) and Cu(II) up to milligram levels using masking agents. Polyurethane foam is used for the preconcentration and separation of cobalt from thiocyanate media and this procedure is applied to its determination in nickel salts and steel alloys.     

Construction of functional porphyrin polystyrene nano-architectures by ATRP

A series of mono-functionalized metallo-porphyrin polystyrenes have been synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization and their self-assembling behavior was studied by electron microscopy showing that the polystyrene tail-length influences the aggregate architecture.
