Probing the Catalytic Activity of Reduced Graphene Oxide Decorated with Au Nanoparticles Triggered by Visible Light

Hybrid materials in which reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is decorated with Au nanoparticles (rGO–Au NPs) were obtained by the in situ reduction of GO and AuCl₄^?_(aq) by ascorbic acid. On laser excitation, rGO could be oxidized as a result of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excitation in the Au NPs, which generates activated O₂ through the transfer of SPR‐excited hot electrons to O₂ molecules adsorbed from air. The SPR‐mediated catalytic oxidation of p‐aminothiophenol (PATP) to p,p′‐dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) was then employed as a model reaction to probe the effect of rGO as a support for Au NPs on their SPR‐mediated catalytic activities. The increased conversion of PATP to DMAB relative to individual Au NPs indicated that charge‐transfer processes from rGO to Au took place and contributed to improved SPR‐mediated activity. Since the transfer of electrons from Au to adsorbed O₂ molecules is the crucial step for PATP oxidation, in addition to the SPR‐excited hot electrons of Au NPs, the transfer of electrons from rGO to Au contributed to increasing the electron density of Au above the Fermi level and thus the Au‐to‐O₂ charge‐transfer process.     

Bounds on the inverses of nonnegative triangular matrices with monotonicity properties

Some bounds on the entries and on the norm of the inverse of triangular matrices with nonnegative and monotone entries are found. All the results are obtained by exploiting the properties of the fundamental matrix of the recurrence relation which generates the sequence of the entries of the inverse matrix. One of the results generalizes a theorem contained in a recent article of one of the authors about Toeplitz matrices.     

Application of strategically designed sample composition to the rapid analytical screening of milk samples for polychlorinated biphenyls

Strategically designed sample composition (SSC) is a new technique that decreases the number of analytical determinations needed in routine screening to as few as the number of original sample specimens while providing information that is specific to them. Although this new technique has been applied to environmental studies, this paper describes its first application to food safety studies. Contamination of milk samples with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was chosen as a case study to show the usefulness and potential of the SSC technique with a fast analytical procedure that involves saponification of the samples and solid-phase microextraction of the PCBs. A total of 20 sample specimens can be analyzed in 11 determinations with excellent predictions of the positive samples and the concentration levels of the contaminants. The robustness of the strategy was investigated and demonstrated.     

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometric study of non-commercial C-4-substituted 1,4-dihydropyridines and their oxidized derivatives

A gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method for the qualitative and quantitative determination of the calcium-channel antagonists C-4-substituted 1,4-dihydropyridines, and their corresponding N-ethyl derivatives, is presented. Also, the electrochemical oxidation and the reactivity of the compounds with alkyl radicals derived from 2,2'-azobis-(2-amidinopropane) were monitored by GC/MS. Mass spectral fragmentation patterns for the C-4-substituted 1,4-dihydropy-ridine parent drugs were significantly different from those of their oxidation products, generated either by electrochemical oxidation or by reaction with alkyl radicals. However, for N-ethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine compounds it was not possible to detect the final products (pyridinium salts) using these experimental conditions.     

Synthesis and antifungal activity against strains of candida albicans of 6‐fluoro‐4(5 or 7)‐chloro‐2‐(difluorobenzoyl)aminobenzothiazoles

A series of 6‐fluoro‐4‐(5 or 7)‐chloro‐2‐(difluorobenzoyl)aminobenzothiazoles 3a‐r were prepared to investigate their potential biological activity. In this work, the results of their in vitro antifungal activity against some strains of Candida albicans are reported. It was found that some derivatives displayed antifungal activity higher than that for 3k [1a] compound already described in literature.     

Reaction of N,N'-dialkyldithiodianilines with β-ketoesters. A new synthesis of N-alkyl-2-acyl-3-oxo-3,4-dihydro-1,4-benzothiazines

The title compounds 3a-j together with the N-alkylacylketene S,N-acetals 12a-j were obtained by reaction of N,N'-dialkyldithiodianilines with β-ketoesters compounds. A possible reaction pathway is suggested.     

Synthesis and characterization of 4-hydroxy-3-phenylprolines

4-Hydroxy-3-phenylprolines were synthesized via 1-acetyl-2,2-diethoxycarbonyl-2,3-dihydro-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrole. Reversed phase hplc resulted in the isolation of the products which were characterized by ¹H and ¹³C nmr spectroscopy.     

Temperature dissipation measurements in a fully developed turbulent channel flow

All three derivatives of the temperature fluctuation in a fully developed turbulent channel flow have been measured using a pair of parallel cold wires with fixed separations in either the x (streamwise), y (normal to the wall) or z (spanwise) direction. At several locations, measurements were also made, each for a range of y separations between the wires. These latter measurements were important for establishing a suitable method of correcting the data for the effect of wire separation, thus allowing the fixed separation data to be corrected. In the near-wall region, the corrected temperature dissipation is in good agreement with results from direct numerical simulations. The time scale ratio deduced from measurements and simulations agrees well with the theoretical wall value.     

Crystal,Molecular, and Electronic Structure of 1-Acetyl-indoline and Derivatives

The crystal and molecular structures of the following molecules have been determined: 1-acetyl-indoline, 1-acetyl-5-nitro-indoline, l-acetyl-5-nitro-7-bromo-indoline, 1-acetyl-5-bromo-7-nitroindoline, and l-acetyl-5-bromo-7-nitro-indol. Molecular orbital calculations are performed for these compounds and two related species.
