Lipid profiling of mammalian cells with in situ matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry

The analysis of cellular lipids and phospholipids has been of continuously increasing research interest due to the importance of these molecules in psychological process. In this work, a mass spectrometry-based method for direct, in situ analysis of lipids in cells was reported. Mammalian cells were directly cultured on ITO-coated glass and then analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The matrix application process was achieved by electrospray coating, which produced a homogenous layer of matrix crystal on the sample. The detection results and reproducibility are satisfactory. With this method, a profile of abundant membrane lipids is generated, which is characteristic of cell type. In conclusion, this in situ MALDI-MS cellular lipid analysis method provides a platform for sensitive and robust molecular profiling of mammalian cells.

A prototype RF power source for CSNS/RCS

A prototype RF power source has been built to supply high RF power to a ferrite-loaded cavity, which is a part of R&D of the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron of China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS/RCS). A direct fast RF feedback amplifier, a 4:1 impedance transformer and auto tuning grid were locally located to compensate the heavy beam loading of CSNS/RCS. Design and commissioning of the RF power source is discussed here, also with some advice on system improvement.     

Carboxylate-bridged helical chains based on an azo carboxylate oximate ligand

Two helical one-dimensional complexes [MnII(MeOH)4][MnIV(L·)2]·2MeOH (1) and [MnIII(salen)][MnIII(L)2] (2) (H2L = HON=C(Ph)N=NC6H4CO2H) contain the noninnocent ligand [Mn(L·)2]2- and innocent low-spin [Mn(L)2]-. Intrachain anti-ferromagnetic interaction between adjacent manganese ions via the syn-anti carboxylate bridges in complex 1. Alternate syn-anti and anti-anti carboxylate bridges have been found to transmit ferro- and antiferromagnetic coupling between high-spin and low-spin Mn(III) ions in complex 2.     

Acoustic Goos-Hänchen effect

We report two models of the lateral displacement of acoustic-wave scattering on a fluid-solid interface that reveal an acoustic analog of the Goos-Hänchen effect in optics. This acoustic analog is called the acoustic Goos-Hänchen effect. Using newly proposed models, we made numerical calculations for the system of a water-Perspex interface. Specifically, in the post-critical-angle region, we observed a lateral displacement (and transition time) of the reflected P-wave with respect to the incident P-wave. The first arrival of the acoustic signal from the interface is found to be a reflected P-wave rather than the sliding-refraction P-wave usually described in traditional acoustic-logging sliding P-wave theory. For both proposed models, the effective propagation speed of the reflected P-wave along the interface depends on not only the physical properties of the interfacial media but also the incident angle. These observations are intriguing and warrant further investigation.     

Twin-Pulse Soliton Operation of a Fiber Laser

We report on the experimental observation of a novel type of twin-pulse soliton in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser. Twin-pulse soliton interaction in the laser cavity are also experimentally investigated and compared with those of the single pulse soliton.
