The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri), a conifer native to high elevation sites in the southern Appalachians, has suffered severe mortality attributed to an exotic insect, the balsam woolly adelgid (BWA) (Adelges piceae). Fraser fir, like many other plants, produce volatile organic compounds called monoterpenes in a variety of tissues, including the cortical oleoresin found in blisters on the bark. The purpose of this study was to perform a chemosystematic study to evaluate whether differences in monoterpene composition of Fraser fir oleoresin were observed as a function of the season sampled, the presence or absence of BWA infestation, the health of a tree, and the susceptibility of trees to BWA, based on geographic location. Oleoresin was collected in September and December, 1994, at two mountains, Mount Rogers, where the fir were relatively healthy, and Roan Mountain, where heavy to moderate mortality has been observed. The oleoresin samples were dissolved in methylene chloride, and the monoterpenes were determined by gas chromatography. This method was shown to have acceptable precision for chemosystematic studies for five monoterpenes and the total of all monoterpenes. The levels of monoterpenes in oleoresin were statistically the same for most compounds in September and December, although the total monoterpenes were higher in September at Mount Rogers and α-pinene was higher in December at Roan Mountain. Infested and uninfested fir had the same levels of oleoresin monoterpenes at both mountains. No differences in monoterpene levels were observed at Mount Rogers with healthy and unhealthy fir, but at Roan Mountain, the total monoterpene concentrations were different in these categories. A comparison of monoterpene concentrations in oleoresin from Mount Rogers and Roan Mountain showed statistically significant differences for 3-carene, β-phellandrene, and total monoterpenes.  相似文献

Pristine and WO3 decorated TiO2 nanorods (NRs) were synthesised to investigate n-n-type heterojunction gas sensing properties. TiO2 NRs were fabricated via hydrothermal method on fluorine-doped tin oxide coated glass (FTO) substrates. Then, tungsten was sputtered on the TiO2 NRs and thermally oxidised to obtain WO3 nanoparticles. The heterostructure was characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Fabricated sensor devices were exposed to VOCs such as toluene, xylene, acetone and ethanol, and humidity at different operation temperatures. Experimental results demonstrated that the heterostructure has better sensor response toward ethanol at 200 °C. Enhanced sensing properties are attributed to the heterojunction formation by decorating TiO2 NRs with WO3.  相似文献

The Gamow-Teller strength distributions below the particle threshold in 138La and 180Ta, deduced from high-resolution measurements of the (3He,t) reaction at 0 degrees, allow us to evaluate the role of charged-current reactions for the production of these extremely rare nuclides in neutrino-nucleosynthesis models. The analysis suggests that essentially all 138La in the Universe can be made that way. Neutrino nucleosynthesis also contributes significantly to the abundance of 180Ta but the magnitude depends on the unknown branching ratio for population of the long-lived isomer.  相似文献

We report the MRI findings of primary small-cell carcinoma of the kidney (PSCCK) in a 59-year-old female. This tumor appeared as a 16-cm mass that arose from the right kidney. This lesion had diminished signal on T1-weighted images and heterogeneous mixed signal on T2-weighted images. The tumor primarily involved the renal medulla with persistent thin renal cortex. Despite the tumors' large size, no substantial central necrosis was present. The predominant medullary location and the lack of central necrosis in this large tumor were features unusual for renal cell carcinoma and should raise the suspicion of another malignancy, the differential diagnosis of which should contain extrapulmonary small-cell carcinoma of the kidney.  相似文献

To demonstrate the MR imaging features of liver metastases in patients with the clinical and histologic diagnosis of tumors of unknown primary tumors, a retrospective 7-year study was performed that included a total of 14 consecutive patients (7 men and 7 women; age range, 39-82 years; mean age, 60.6 years) with liver metastases from unknown primary site who had undergone MR imaging. The following lesion features were evaluated: a) number, b) diameter, c) signal intensity on T1 and T(2)-weighted images, and d) pattern of enhancement on immediate, 45 s and 90 s post gadolinium images. Lesions were classified as hypovascular, hypervascular and nearly isovascular relative to liver parenchyma as shown on immediate post gadolinium images. Patients were separated into four major groups, related to the histologic diagnosis of the lesions: (I) poorly differentiated neoplasms; (II) well-differentiated and moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma; (III) squamous cell carcinoma; (IV) combined poorly differentiated carcinoma and poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. MRI findings were correlated with histologic information obtained by chart review and confirmed by retrospective histopathology review. All patients had the histologic diagnosis of adenocarcinoma: 8 patients belonged to group II (1 patient with the subtype well-differentiated and 7 patients with the subtype moderately differentiated) and 6 patients to group IV. Eleven patients (79%) presented with multiple lesions distributed throughout both hepatic lobes; 3 patients exhibited solitary lesions. All solitary metastases possessed a diameter equal or larger than 5 cm. Patients with multiple metastases demonstrated a wide range of diameter, ranging from less than 1.5 cm to more than 5 cm. Regarding lesion vascularity, 4 of 13 of the patients had hypovascular metastases and 9 of 13 of the patients had hypervascular lesions. One patient demonstrated both types of lesions. Five of six patients with the histopathologic diagnosis of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma demonstrated hypervascular metastases. Solitary metastases were most often hypovascular (2 of 3); however no correlation with the histologic subtype was possible. Liver metastases from unknown primary site are often multiple and often hypervascular. Poorly differentiated tumors are the most common histologic type. Metastases are not uncommonly hypovascular, and these are often solitary.  相似文献

Improved values for stellar weak-interaction rates have been recently calculated based upon a large shell-model diagonalization. Using these new rates (for both beta decay and electron capture), we have examined the presupernova evolution of massive stars in the range (15--40)M(o). Comparing our new models with a standard set of presupernova models by Woosley and Weaver, we find significantly larger values for the electron-to-baryon ratio at the onset of collapse and smaller iron core masses. These changes may have important consequences for nucleosynthesis and the supernova explosion mechanism.  相似文献

The MR findings in a 32-year-old man with pancreatic VIPoma and liver metastases are described. A 2-cm mass was present in the region of the tail of the pancreas that was best shown on T1-weighted fat-suppressed images as a low-signal intensity mass. Multiple liver metastases were present that showed intense peripheral ring enhancement on immediate post gadolinium spoiled gradient echo images.  相似文献

Spruce–fir forests form unique ecosystems in the eastern United States and Canada. These forests are composed of Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) and red spruce (Picea rubens) in the Southern Appalachians, and balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and red spruce in the middle and northern Appalachians. Decline of spruce–fir forests has been observed since the 1960s that has been attributed, at least in part, to acidic deposition. Acidic deposition has been reported to decrease the availability of calcium and increase the availability of aluminum and induce decline of red spruce at high elevation sites above 1800 m. Aluminum, calcium, and magnesium were determined in Fraser fir, balsam fir, and red spruce foliage and soil from sites in the southern and middle Appalachians in order to evaluate whether acidic deposition may play a role in the decline of the conifers. Our nutrient studies did not provide any evidence that acidic deposition was affecting the conifers.  相似文献

The objective of this research was two-fold: First, to describe the normal and abnormal MR appearances of the duodenum using combined Half-Fourier Acquisition Single Shot RARE (HASTE) and gadolinium-enhanced standard and fat suppressed spoiled gradient echo (SGE) sequences. The second objective was to assess the ability of these combined sequences to detect and characterize duodenal diseases. MR examinations were performed on fifty consecutive patients with no clinical history of duodenal diseases, who were 1) imaged with HASTE and gadolinium-enhanced standard and fat suppressed SGE sequences and 2) referred to MR examination for reasons other than duodenal diseases, and were reviewed retrospectively to determine the normal MR appearances of the duodenum. A second population of patients with abnormal duodenum who were imaged with the same MR sequences were included in the second part of this study. This population was composed of 20 consecutive patients with subsequently proven duodenal abnormalities, including: malrotation (2), diverticula (4), intussusception (1), sprue (1), polyps (2), neurofibroma (1), lymphoma (1), Zollinger Ellison syndrome (1), metastatic disease (1), Crohn's disease (1), and wall thickening and duodenitis (5). Normal measurements of the duodenum are described. Abnormalities of wall thickness and duodenal masses required combined HASTE and gadolinium-enhanced SGE images to evaluate well. Abnormalities of the bowel lumen (e.g., diverticula and intussusception), and developmental variants (e.g., malrotation), were sufficiently visualized on HASTE images alone. Bowel inflammation was best shown on gadolinium-enhanced fat suppressed SGE images. HASTE and gadolinium-enhanced fat suppressed SGE sequences are complementary techniques for the demonstration of normal and abnormal duodenum. The combined use of both sequences allows evaluation of different aspects of bowel diseases; abnormalities of position, lumen, and contents are well shown on HASTE, while inflammation is best shown on gadolinium enhanced fat suppressed SGE, and wall thickening and masses are best evaluated with the combined use of both techniques.  相似文献

Purpose

To evaluate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and to determine the correlation of MRI findings with histopathology and Mayo End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score.

Materials and Methods

Thirty patients (18 males, 12 females; mean age: 57±8.9 years; age range: 35–71 years) with histopathologically proven NASH who underwent MRI examinations between January 2001 and October 2005 were included in the study. Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed all magnetic resonance (MR) examinations in consensus to evaluate the presence and extent of predetermined findings of NASH including liver steatosis, early patchy liver enhancement indicating inflammation and liver fibrosis. The findings detected on MRI were correlated and compared to histopathological findings and MELD score by using nonparametric Spearman correlation coefficient and Kruskal–Wallis analysis of variance.

Results

Liver steatosis was observed in 10 of 30 patients; early patchy liver enhancement, in 8 of 30 patients and liver fibrosis in 19 of 30 patients on MR images. Liver fibrosis was reticular in all these patients. There were statistically significant moderate correlations between MRI findings of liver steatosis and histopathologic grades of steatosis (r=0.43; P<.05), and between MRI findings of fibrosis and histopathologic stages of fibrosis (r=0.61; P<.001). Early patchy enhancement did not demonstrate statistically significant correlation with inflammation (P=.28). There was no statistically significant overall correlation between MRI findings of NASH and MELD score.

Conclusion

MRI findings of liver steatosis and fibrosis in NASH showed moderate correlations with histopathologic grades of steatosis and stages of fibrosis, but MRI findings of NASH did not demonstrate any significant correlations with MELD score.  相似文献
