Nitrobenzene oxidation of fractions of cotton-plant dioxane lignin

Summary Analysis of the products of alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation of lignin fractions has confirmed their chemical inhomogeneity and has shown that in the various fractions the amounts of condensed syringly and guaiacyl structures differed markedly.Institute of the Chemistry of Plant Substances, Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, Tashkent. Isospecific Bulk Polymerization of Propylene with the Use of ansa-Metallocenes as a Mixture of rac and meso Isomers

The effects of various pathways of the formation of catalytic systems based on the rac-Me₂SiInd₂ZrCl₂ metallocene on the activity and properties of polypropylene prepared by the bulk polymerization of propylene were studied in detail. It was found that the conditions of formation of the catalytic system affect not only its activity and the character of kinetic curves but also the molecular weight of the synthesized polymer. Propylene polymerization was studied with the use of a number of bisindenyl derivatives of zirconium, which were mixtures of rac and meso forms that differ in the nature of substituents in the Si bridge or the indenyl ligand. The conclusion was drawn that, with the use of metallocenes as a mixture of rac and meso forms, high-molecular-weight isotactic polypropylene can be prepared with high stereoregularity at a very high rate; thereby, the stage of separation of a pure rac isomer can be excluded in the synthesis of the catalyst.

Bombardment of a clean Ta target by 4 keV Cs⁺ ions under ultra high vacuum (UHV) has been experimentally shown to give rise to photon continuum emission by sputtered products.     

2-Phosphinothioyl- and 2-phosphinoylethylcyclopentadienyl zirconium and titanium complexes. Crystal structure of [η5:η1-C5H4CH2CH2P(O)Ph2]TiCl3

The intracomplex conversion of (2-diphenylphosphanoethyl)cyclopentadienyl zirconium and titanium complexes into the corresponding 2-phosphinothioyl and 2-phosphinoyl derivatives, viz., (η⁵-C₅H₅)[η ⁵-C₅H₄CH₂CH₂P(S)Ph₂]ZrCl₂, [η⁵-C₅H₄CH₂CH₂P(S)Ph₂]ZrCl₃, [η⁵:η¹C₅H₄CH₂CH₂P(O)Ph₂]ZrCl₃·THF, and [η⁵:η ¹-C₅H₄CH₂CH₂P(O)Ph₂]TiCl₃ (7), was performed. The NMR spectroscopy data revealed the following order of the coordination ability of the functional groups with respect to the Zr center: Ph₂P=O > Ph₂P > Ph₂P=S. An analogous order was found for the monodentate ligands (Ph₃P=O > Ph₃P > Ph₃P=S) with respect to (η⁵-C₅H₅)ZrCl₃. The molecular structure of complex 7 was established by X-ray diffraction analysis. Coordination of the Ph₂P=O group to the titanium atom was found retained both in the crystalline state and solution.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Improving image quality in reflection confocal microscopy involving gold nanoparticles and osmotically active immersion liquids

We consider the possibility of using gold nanoparticles to improve the image contrast of biotissue structures in reflection confocal laser microscopy. We present the results of experimental studies using gold nanospheres with a diameter of 60 nm compared to osmotically active immersion contrast agents based on glycerol.     

Acoustic wave scattering from a composed shell reinforced by a single rib: characteristics of peripheral waves

The steady-state axisymmetrical problem of a plane acoustic wave scattering from a composed shell is considered. The shell has a cylindrical part and two hemispherical endcaps. The rib is a ring of rectangular cross-section that divides the shell into two equal parts. The motion of the shell and the rib is described by the equations of elasticity theory, and the liquid is described by the Helmholtz equation. The solution is obtained numerically by a coupled finite element/boundary element model. Two peripheral waves are generated in the shell: the membrane S0 wave and the bending type water-borne A wave. The form function, acoustic spectrogram and dispersion curves of the phase velocities are presented, and the effect of the rib on the peripheral waves is discussed.     

Spectrophotometric determination of cyanide by chromogenic disulfide in water using micellar catalysis

A spectrophotometric method is developed for the determination of cyanide in aqueous solutions using chromogenic disulfide 4,4′-2bis(1-hydroxy-3,6-disulfo-8-chloro-2-naphthylazo)diphenyldisulfide (BAS-chlorine) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTMAC). The use of CTMAC allows diminishing the limit of detection for the spectrophotometric determination of cyanide to (7.2 ± 0.3) ng/mL (p = 0.95, n = 5, RSD = 29%).
