Controlled Radical Polymerization

Various methods which lead to the control of molecular weight and polydispersities, and which allow for the preparation of block copolymers by radical polymerization are discussed. Thermal polymerizationof styrenes in the presence of stable radicals, polymerization of vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate in the presence of chromium complexed by macrocyclic ligands polymerization of vinyl acetate initiated by organoaluminum compounds complexed by dipyridyl and activated by stable radicals, as well as in the presence of phosphites, are described in detail.     

Moisture resistance of polished and coated KCl windows

The moisture resistance of ultratransparent KCl grown in a reactive atmosphere was studied on polished KCl samples coated with protective films of BaF₂. The lifetime was improved about 4 times compared with uncoated samples. A further improvement was obtained by additional chemical polishing before coating. However, in such a case buckling of the film in a pattern of narrow parallel stripes was observed in an intermediate stage of the humidity test.     

The Distribution of Thorium in Fluorite Single Crystals

Single crystals of CaF₂ doped with ThO₂ were grown by the Czochralski-Kyropoulos technique in graphite crucibles. The distribution of thorium in the as grown crystals has been investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy, selected area diffraction and optical spectroscopy.     

Ferromagnetic hcp chromium in Cr/Ru(0001) superlattices

We report the first observation of a weak ferromagnetic state of Cr in Cr/Ru(0001) superlattices, based on magnetic hysteresis and corroborated by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the CrL(2,3) edges. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and Cr K-edge polarized x-ray absorption investigations have shown that the Cr layers thinner than 8 angstroms adopt a slightly distorted hcp structure, accompanied by a large atomic volume expansion of up to 14% compared to the bcc packing volume. The expanded hcp structure clearly induces the observed ferromagnetism, in agreement with theory.     

Normal emissivity of high-purity nickel at temperatures between 1440 and 1605 K

Emissivity measurements for nickel were carried out in a vacuum by comparing the radiation heat fluxes of individual samples and a blackbody cavity maintained at the same temperature. The data presented here cover the spectral range between 1 and 16 μm for temperatures of 1440, 1488, 1551, and 1605 K. An experimental apparatus was designed and constructed to measure the spectral normal emissivity of suspended metals in a vacuum by a radiometric technique. The apparatus is comprised of a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, a high-temperature blackbody cavity (hohlraum), and a vacuum chamber where a metal sample can be electromagnetically heated to temperatures above 1300 K. Although the samples can also be levitated in the electromagnetic coil, the positioning is accomplished here only by suspending them inside a copper induction coil     

Viscous shocks in Hele-Shaw flow and Stokes phenomena of the Painlevé I transcendent

In Hele-Shaw flows at vanishing surface tension, the boundary of a viscous fluid develops cusp-like singularities. In recent papers Lee et al. (2009, 2008) [8] and [9] we have showed that singularities trigger viscous shocks propagating through the viscous fluid. Here we show that the weak solution of the Hele-Shaw problem describing viscous shocks is equivalent to a semiclassical approximation of a special real solution of the Painlevé I equation. We argue that the Painlevé I equation provides an integrable deformation of the Hele-Shaw problem which describes flow passing through singularities. In this interpretation shocks appear as Stokes level-lines of the Painlevélinear problem.     

Amplitude analysis of the B+/--->phiK*(892)+/- decay

We perform an amplitude analysis of B+/--->phi(1020)K*(892)+/- decay with a sample of about 384 x 10(6) BB[over ] pairs recorded with the BABAR detector. Overall, twelve parameters are measured, including the fractions of longitudinal fL and parity-odd transverse f perpendicular amplitudes, branching fraction, strong phases, and six parameters sensitive to CP violation. We use the dependence on the Kpi invariant mass of the interference between the JP=1(-) and 0+ Kpi components to resolve the discrete ambiguity in the determination of the strong and weak phases. Our measurements of fL=0.49+/-0.05+/-0.03, f perpendicular=0.21+/-0.05+/-0.02, and the strong phases point to the presence of a substantial helicity-plus amplitude from a presently unknown source.
