InGaAs/InAlAs Five Layer Asymmetric Coupled Quantum Well (FACQW) for Ultra-Wideband Ultrafast Optical Modulators

An InGaAs/InAlAs five-layer asymmetric coupled quantum well (FACQW) is expected to show very large electrorefractive index change. n in a wideband transparency region. Band structures of the FACQW are analyzed with Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian. The electrorefractive characteristics of the FACQW are discussed.     

Characteristic curved structure derived from collagen-containing tubular giant vesicles under static magnetic field

Collagen-containing tubular giant vesicles (Col–tGVs) under a high static magnetic field were found to constitute characteristic curved structures (e.g. circular, 8-figure, and hairpin-loop), which were sustained by polymerization of collagen units inside the tGV. We ascribed the formation of these structures to the elasticity of the tGV and to the competing diamagnetic anisotropies between collagen and the tGV. These curved structures can be well expressed by the equation of elastica.     

Synthesis of pyridinium ylide complexes of methylcobaloxime and crystal structure determination of [benzoyl(1-pyridinio)methanide]bis(dimethylglyoximato)methylcobalt benzene solvate

Summary Pyridinium ylide complexes of methylcobaloxime were synthesized by the treatment of an ylide with Co(Hdmg)₂ Me(SMe₂). The crystal structure of one of the complexes, [Co(Hdmg)₂Me C₅H₅NCHCOPh]C₆H₆ has been determined by x-ray diffraction techniques. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P2₁/c, witha = 10.456(5),b = 11.079(4),c = 24.58(1) Å, = 99.58(6), V = 2808 ų, Z = 4. The Co-C (ylide) bond distance is 2.18 Å and Co-C(methyl) 2.04 Å. C(ylide)-Co-C(methyl) bond angle is 174.9°. The crystal, i.r. and¹H n.m.r. data suggest that thetrans-influence of the ylide ligands is larger than that of py, Melm, OH₂ or PPh₃.     

NMR and MO Studies on the Molecular Structure of a Fluoranthene-Benzene Complex

Summary. Fluoranthene (FA) forms a 1:1 van der Waals complex with benzene in cyclohexane. The ¹H NMR spectrum of this complex shows that the FA moiety in the complex state has five kinds of hydrogen atoms and that the ¹H NMR peaks assigned to the protons attached to the naphthalene skeleton are largely shifted to higher magnetic field on complex formation with benzene. These observations indicate that the complex takes the structure of C_S symmetry, in which the benzene molecule mainly interacts with the electronic system localized on the naphthalene moiety of FA. The present ab initio calculations reproduce well the ¹H NMR spectral shifts mentioned above and the experimentally predicted C_S structure of the complex. According to the PPP calculations for the electronic absorption spectral changes on the complex formation, the FA-benzene complex is considered to take a sandwich type structure.     

GalnAsP-InP double-heterostructure lasers

GaInAsP-InP double-heterostructure lasers which are the most promising optical sources for the long wavelength region have been investigated. In the crystal growth, it was found that the liquidus and solidus isotherms are affected by the orientation of InP source and substrate crystals in the liquid phase epitaxial growth of GaInAsP alloys. The unit cell of the GaInAsP epitaxial layer is tetragonally deformed due to the interface lattice misfit such that the lattice constant parallel to the wafer surface is invariant across the interfaces in the GaInAsP-InP wafers. Two kinds of stripe lasers, planar stripe and buried lasers, have been fabricated by use of GaInAsP cap layer for good p-type contact. The planar stripe lasers of 10,15 and 20 m wide stripe operated in fundamental-transverse mode with 20–30% differential external efficiencies per facet. The 15 m wide stripe laser showed good mode characteristics to operate in a fundamental-transverse mode up to the cw output power of 22 mW per facet and in a single longitudinal mode over a wide range of currents. The buried stripe laser operated in a fundamental-transverse mode with the threshold current as low as 30 mA by making the stripe width narrower than 2 (m. The laser succeeded in cw operation at 100 °C because of its low threshold current and low thermal resistance.The authors would like to thank K. Noda, N. Kuroyanagi and Y. Inter- and intramolecular activation of aromatic C-H bonds by diphosphine and hydrido-bridged dinuclear iridium complexes

Reactions of [(Cp*Ir)2(mu-dmpm)(mu-H)2]2+ (1) with NaOtBu in aromatic solvent at room temperature give [(Cp*Ir)(H)(mu-dmpm)(mu-H)(Cp*Ir)(Ar)]+ [Ar = Ph (3), p-Tol (4a), m-Tol (4b), 2-furanyl (5a), 3-furanyl (5b)] via intermolecular aromatic C-H activation. Treatment of [(Cp*Ir)2(mu-dppm)(mu-H)2]2+ (2) with base (Et2NH) results in intramolecular C-H activation of the phenyl group in the dppm ligand to give [(Cp*Ir)(H){mu-PPh(C6H4)CH2PPh2}(mu-H)(Cp*Ir)]+ (6). The structures of 3, 5a, and 6 have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods.     

Enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-azimine and (+)-carpaine

[reaction: see text] The enantioselective total syntheses of (+)-azimine and (+)-carpaine have been developed, starting with (S)-1,2,4-butanetriol as a single source of chirality. The key common feature in these syntheses involves stereoselective intramolecular hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of an acylnitroso compound. The critical macrocyclic dilactonization of the N-Cbz derivatives of azimic acid and carpamic acid was efficiently achieved by using the Yamguchi macrocyclization conditions.     

ESR studies of the spin-exchange interaction within parallel planar copper (II) dimers in frozen solutions

The temperature variations of the ESR spectral intensity of the triplet dimers over the range 1.6 to 4.2 K indicated that the spin-exchange interaction within the parallel planar dimers, which had been reported to be ferromagnetic in crystal, is antiferromagnetic (1.5–2.5 cm⁻¹) in frozen solutions.     

Accurate mass measurement of low molecular weight compounds by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

We report the application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for the accurate measurement of mass of low molecular weight compounds (smaller than 1500 Da), a linear peptide, two types of cyclic depsipeptides, a polyhydroxy-macrocyclic lactone, and two prenylated flavonoids, with delayed extraction in the reflector mode. The performance of the MALDI-TOF instrument was less than those of fast atom bombardment and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry instruments and insufficient to give acceptable accuracy for literature reporting. Nevertheless, when combined with NMR spectrometry and/or amino acid analysis to give information on the numbers of carbon atoms and index of hydrogen deficiency, MALDI was useful for determination of the elemental composition of the low molecular weight compounds available in small quantities.
