The utility of phonetic features versus acoustic properties for describing perceptual relations among speech sounds was evaluated with a multidimensional scaling analysis of Miller and Nicely's [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 27, 338-352 (1955)] consonant confusions data. The INDSCAL method and program were employed with the original data log transformed to enhance consistency with the linear INDSCAL model. A four-dimensional solution accounted for 69% of the variance and was best characterized in terms of acoustic properties of the speech signal, viz., temporal relationship of periodicity and burst onset, shape of voiced first formanant transition, shape of voiced second formanant transition, and amount of initial spectral dispersion, rather than in terms of phonetic features. The amplitude and spectral location of acoustic energy specifying each perceptual dimension were found to determine a dimension's perceptual effect as the signal was degraded by masking noise and bandpass filtering. Consequently, the perceptual bases of identification confusions between pairs of syllables were characterized in terms of the shared acoustic properties which remained salient in the degraded speech. Implications of these findings for feature-based accounts of perceptual relationships between phonemes are considered.  相似文献

In many generic combustion models, one finds that a combustionwave will develop with a specific wave speed. However, thereare possible initial temperature profiles which do not evolveinto such waves, but rather die out to the ambient temperature.There can exist, in some models, a clear distinction betweenthose initial conditions that do evolve into combustion wavesand those that do not; this is sometimes referred to as thewatershed initial condition. When fuel consumption is consideredto be negligible, analytical methods can be used to obtain theexact watershed. In this paper, we consider the problem of determiningpseudo-watersheds and ascertaining the relationship betweenthese pseudo-watersheds and the exact watersheds. Bilateral cochlear implant patients are unable to localize as well as normal hearing listeners. Although poor sensitivity to interaural time differences clearly contributes to this deficit, it is unclear whether deficits in terms of interaural level differences are also a contributing factor. In this study, localization was tested while manipulating interaural time and level cues using head-related transfer functions. The results indicate that bilateral cochlear implant users' ability to localize based on interaural level differences is actually greater than that of untrained normal hearing listeners.  相似文献

The perceptual representation of speech is generally assumed to be discrete rather than continuous, pointing to the need for general discrete analytic models to represent observed perceptual similarities among speech sounds. The INDCLUS (INdividual Differences CLUStering) model and algorithm [J.D. Carroll and P. Arabie, Psychometrika 48, 157-169 (1983)] can provide this generality, representing symmetric three-way similarity data (stimuli X stimuli X conditions) as an additive combination of overlapping, and generally not hierarchial, clusters whose weights (which are numerical values gauging the importance of the clusters) vary both as a function of the cluster and condition being considered. INDCLUS was used to obtain a discrete representation of underlying perceptual structure in the Miller and Nicely consonant confusion data [G.A. Miller and P.E. Nicely, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 27, 338-352 (1955)]. A 14-cluster solution accounted for 82.9% of total variance across the 17 listening conditions. The cluster composition and the variations in cluster weights as a function of stimulus degradation were interpreted in terms of the common and unique perceptual attributes of the consonants within each cluster. Low-pass filtering and noise masking selectively degraded unique attributes, especially the cues for place of articulation, while high-pass filtering degraded both unique and common attributes. The clustering results revealed that perceptual similarities among consonants are accurately modeled by additive combinations of their specific and discrete acoustic attributes whose weights are determined by the nature of the stimulus degradation.  相似文献

Ten patients who use the Ineraid cochlear implant were tested on a consonant identification task. The stimuli were 16 consonants in the "aCa" environment. The patients who scored greater than 60 percent correct were found to have high feature information scores for amplitude envelope features and for features requiring the detection of high-frequency energy. The patients who scored less than 60 percent correct exhibited lower scores for all features of the signal. The difference in performance between the two groups of patients may be due, at least in part, to differences in the detection or resolution of high-frequency components in the speech signal.  相似文献

A Speech Intelligibility Index (SII) for the sentences in the Cantonese version of the Hearing In Noise Test (CHINT) was derived using conventional procedures described previously in studies such as Studebaker and Sherbecoe [J. Speech Hear. Res. 34, 427-438 (1991)]. Two studies were conducted to determine the signal-to-noise ratios and high- and low-pass filtering conditions that should be used and to measure speech intelligibility in these conditions. Normal hearing subjects listened to the sentences presented in speech-spectrum shaped noise. Compared to other English speech assessment materials such as the English Hearing In Noise Test [Nilsson et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 1085-1099 (1994)], the frequency importance function of the CHINT suggests that low-frequency information is more important for Cantonese speech understanding. The difference in ,frequency importance weight in Chinese, compared to English, was attributed to the redundancy of test material, tonal nature of the Cantonese language, or a combination of these factors.  相似文献

Speech waveform envelope cues for consonant recognition   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
This study investigated the cues for consonant recognition that are available in the time-intensity envelope of speech. Twelve normal-hearing subjects listened to three sets of spectrally identical noise stimuli created by multiplying noise with the speech envelopes of 19(aCa) natural-speech nonsense syllables. The speech envelope for each of the three noise conditions was derived using a different low-pass filter cutoff (20, 200, and 2000 Hz). Average consonant identification performance was above chance for the three noise conditions and improved significantly with the increase in envelope bandwidth from 20-200 Hz. SINDSCAL multidimensional scaling analysis of the consonant confusions data identified three speech envelope features that divided the 19 consonants into four envelope feature groups ("envemes"). The enveme groups in combination with visually distinctive speech feature groupings ("visemes") can distinguish most of the 19 consonants. These results suggest that near-perfect consonant identification performance could be attained by subjects who receive only enveme and viseme information and no spectral information.  相似文献

Fe(III) hydrolysis and fluoride complexation behavior was examined in 0.68 molal sodium perchlorate at 25°C. Our assessment of the complexation of Fe(III) by fluoride ions produced the following results: logF1 = 5.155, logF2 = 9.107, logF3 = 11.96, logF4 = 13.75, where logFn = 5.155=[FeF n (3-n)+ ][Fe3+]–1[F]–n. The stepwise fluoride complexation constants,FK n+1, obtained in our work (where logF K n+1 =logFn) indicate that K n+1/K n =0.072±0.01. Formation constants for equilibria, Fe3++nH2OFe(OH) n (3–n)+ +nH+, expressed in the form n * [Fe(OH) n (3-n)+ ][H+]n ,[Fe 3+]-1, were estimated as 1 * = –2.754, and 2 * –7. Our study indicates that the results of previous hydrolysis investigations include very large overestimates of Fe(OH) 2 + formation constants.  相似文献

This paper describes an application of the multichannel signal processing technique of adaptive decorrelation filtering to the design of an assistive listening system. A simulated "dinner table" scenario was studied. The speech signal of a desired talker was corrupted by three simultaneous speech jammers and by a speech-shaped diffusive noise. The technique of adaptive decorrelation filtering processing was used to extract the desired speech from the interference speech and noise. The effectiveness of the assistive listening system was evaluated by observing improvements in A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and in sentence intelligibility, where the latter was evaluated in a listening test with eight normal hearing subjects and three subjects with hearing impairments. Significant improvements in SNR and sentence intelligibility were achieved with the use of the assistive listening system. For subjects with normal hearing, the speech reception threshold was improved by 3 to 5 dBA, and for subjects with hearing impairments, the threshold was improved by 4 to 8 dBA.  相似文献
