When does the subadditivity theorem for multiplier ideals hold?

Demailly, Ein and Lazarsfeld proved the subadditivity theorem for multiplier ideals on nonsingular varieties, which states the multiplier ideal of the product of ideals is contained in the product of the individual multiplier ideals. We prove that, in the two-dimensional case, the subadditivity theorem holds on log terminal singularities. However, in the higher dimensional case, we have several counterexamples. We consider the subadditivity theorem for monomial ideals on toric rings and construct a counterexample on a three-dimensional toric ring.

     

Quasi-monocyclic near-infrared pulses with a stabilized carrier-envelope phase characterized by noncollinear cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating.

Precise characterization of noncollinear optical parametric amplifier idler pulses that have bandwidths of more than an octave with a center wavelength at 990 nm was demonstrated. The method employed was cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating with broadband sum-frequency mixing to take advantage of the idler's angular dispersion. Compression to near the transform limit was achieved to produce quasi-monocyclic near-infrared pulses by use of a deformable membrane mirror.     

Stereocontrol of diene polymers by topochemical polymerization of substituted benzyl muconates and their crystallization properties

We report the stereocontrol of diene polymers by the topochemical polymerization of alkoxy-substituted benzyl muconates in the solid state. A monomer stacking structure is controlled by the weak intermolecular interactions in the monomer crystals, depending on the structure and position of the alkoxy-substituent. The translational and alternating types of molecular stacking structures in a column provide diisotactic and disyndiotactic polymers, respectively, by the solid-state polymerization under UV and γ-ray irradiation. On the other hand, the meso and racemo structures of the resulting polymers are determined by the molecular symmetry of the used muconate monomers. The various substituted benzyl ester polymers are transformed into the same ethyl ester polymers with the four types of tacticities. The structure and crystallization behavior of the substituted benzyl ester polymers as well as the ethyl ester polymers have been revealed in detail. Chemically modified proton‐conducting membranes based on sulfonated polyimides: Improved water stability and fuel‐cell performance

A series of branched/crosslinked sulfonated polyimide (B/C‐SPI) membranes were prepared and evaluated as proton‐conducting ionomers based on the new concept of in situ crosslinking from sulfonated polyimide (SPI) oligomers and triamine monomers. Chemical branching and crosslinking in SPI oligomers with 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene as a crosslinker gave the polymer membranes very good water stability and mechanical properties under an accelerated aging treatment in water at 130 °C, despite their high ion‐exchange capacity (2.2–2.6 mequiv g^?1). The resulting polymer electrolytes displayed high proton conductivities of 0.2–0.3 S cm^?1 at 120 °C in water and reasonably high conductivities of 0.02–0.03 S cm^?1 at 50% relative humidity. In a single H₂/O₂ fuel‐cell system at 90 °C, they exhibited high fuel‐cell performances comparable to those of Nafion 112. The B/C‐SPI membranes also displayed good performances in a direct methanol fuel cell with methanol concentrations as high as 50 wt % that were superior to those of Nafion 112. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Terpolymerization of sulfur dioxide or maleic anhydride with unsaturated compounds under ultraviolet irradiation

The effect of ultraviolet irradiation on the terpolymerization was investigated. In the terpolymerizations of sulfur dioxide–butene-1–acrylonitrile, sulfur dioxide–butene-1–n-butyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride–allyl chloride–acrylonitrile systems, the composition of the terpolymers prepared under ultraviolet irradiation was different from those prepared in the dark. The unit content of sulfur dioxide and butene-1 or of maleic anhydride and allyl chloride in the terpolymer increased under ultraviolet irradiation. The nature of the growing end under ultraviolet irradiation is supposed to be the same as that of the dark polymerization on the basis of the same solvent effect on the terpolymer composition, the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight of polymer. The experimental results suggest that the complex between sulfur dioxide and butene-1 or maleic anhydride and allyl chloride might be excited by ultraviolet light and the excited complex may participate in the terpolymerization.     

Significance of anti-HBc IgM in acute hepatitis and hepatitis B associated chronic liver disease

To determine the diagnostic value of anti-HBc IgM in acute viral hepatitis or chronic liver disease B, Anti-HBc IgM was measured by a RIA and an ELISA in 32 patients with acute hepatitis (4 with type A, 15 with type B and 13 with type non A non B), 18 patients with chronic hepatitis and 19 patients with liver cirrhosis. In acute hepatitis B, anti-HBc IgM (both RIA and ELISA) was positive in 14(93%) of 15 patients and its cut-off index value was very high. However, anti-HBc IgM was always negative in one patient with typical course of type B. In 1 of 4 patients with acute hepatitis A and 2 of 13 with non A non B, anti-HBc IgM (RIA and/or ELISA) was positive. These 3 patients were positive for anti-HBs at the onset of disease, so we could not made the diagnosis of acute hepatitis B. Anti-HBc IgM was positive in 21(51%) of 37 patients with HBsAg-positive chronic liver disease by RIA and in 11 (30%) by ELISA, and its cut-off index value was relatively low. These results suggest that when adequate cut-off index value is established, anti-HBc analysis is useful for differentiating recent and current infections from remote infections.     

Novel acyl alpha-pyronoids, dictyopyrone A, B, and C, from Dictyostelium cellular slime molds

For the elucidation of the diversity of secondary metabolites of Dictyostelium cellular slime molds, we investigate the constituent of three species of slime molds. From the methanol extract of their fruit bodies, we obtained three novel compounds, dictyopyrone A (1) and B (2) from D. discoideum and D. rhizoposium and dictyopyrone C (3) from D. longosporum. They possess a unique alpha-pyrone moiety with a side chain at the C-3 position. Their relative structures were elucidated by spectral means, and the absolute configuration was confirmed by asymmetric synthesis of 1. Since these compounds were obtained from different species of Dictyostelium slime molds, they may be a type of compound common to this genus.     

Simultaneous determination of hypoxanthine,inosine, inosine-5′-phosphate and adenosine-5′-phosphate with a multielectrode enzyme sensor

A multielectrode enzyme sensor for the simultaneous determination of adenosine-5′-phosphate (AMP), inosine-5′-phosphate (IMP), inosine (HXR) and hypoxanthine (HX)in fish meat was developed by assembling four enzyme sensors for AMP, IMP, HXR and HX in a flow cell. These compounds were determined from oxygen consumption according to the following reactions: AMP $\text{AD}$ IMP $\text{NT}$ HXR $\text{NP, PO}{}^{\mathrm{3?}}{}_4$ HX $\text{XO, O}{}_2$ Uric acid where AD is AMP deaminase, NT is 5′-nucleotidase, NP is nucleoside phosphorylase and XO is xanthine oxidase. Enzymes were covalently bound to a membrane prepared from cellulose triacetate, 1,8-diamino-4-aminomethyloctane and glutaraldehyde. Sensors for HX, HXR, IMP and AMP were prepared by attaching membranes of XO, XONP, XO NPNT, and of XONPNT and AD, respectively, to four oxygen electrodes. Samples extracted from sea bass, bream, flounder, abalone and arkshell were analyzed within 5 min, from the simultaneous response curves of the four electrodes. Results obtained by the multisensor system were in good agreement with those determined by each single electrode.
