Muon calibration of the cherenkov water detector NEVOD

The problem of calibrating a Cherenkov water detector (CWD) and the possibilities for its use based on the example of the CWD NEVOD are discussed. Results of the calibration of quasi-spherical modules in water volume by means of vertical muons selected by scintillation telescopes and compared to the results from measurements performed at test facilities are presented.     

The effect of chemical composition of a crystallization medium on the cBN stoichiometry

Abstract

The effect of chemical composition of the crystallization medium in synthesis on and some properties of cubic boron nitride (cBN) has been studied. Cubic BN crystals with the lowest free boron content and a boron-nitrogen ratio close to the stoichiometric one are grown in a multicomponent crystallization medium in a Li₃N-BN system. These crystals are characterized by a higher strength and thermal stability.     

Near-Vertical Local Density Spectra of the EAS Charged Particles in the Energy Range of 10 14 –10 17 eV

The results of the long-term measurements of extensive air showers with the calibration telescope system of the Cherenkov water detector are presented for an energy range of 1014–1017 eV. We have used two independent methods for reconstruction of the charged particle local density spectrum: by the multiplicity of the hit counters and by their amplitude responses. By means of Geant4 calculations, we have shown how the structure of the building and the water tank affect the results of the spectrum reconstruction. We obtained two different exponents of charged particles’ local density spectra for CTS top and bottom plane. The results are compared with CORSIKA calculations and data from other setups.     

The formation of a diamond layer on a carbide substrate during diamond interaction with Si,WC and Co

Abstract

A diamond layer was formed on a carbide substrate in an irregular temperature field at high pressures (HP). A gradient scheme of HP cell set-up has been developed, which provides for a simultaneous impregnation of opposite planes of a diamond layer by components that differ in melting temperature. The cell temperature field has been calculated and physico-mechanical properties of the obtained composite material have been studied.

A proposed NEVOD-EAS installation for the detection of extensive air showers

A new installation is dedicated to the independent evaluation of extensive air shower (EAS) energies detected in the NEVOD-DECOR experiment in the knee region of the energy spectrum. The design for the measuring system of the shower installation is based on clusters of scintillation detectors that are located on the roofs of laboratory buildings at MEPhI (Moscow) and will detect the electromagnetic (for near-vertical showers) and muon (for large zenith angles) EAS components. Features of the measuring system, the system for data acquisition and processing, and the results from investigating the characteristics of a single detector are discussed, along with the algorithm for event formation by the data of separate clusters.
