Fracture mechanism of liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin systems with different phase structures

A liquid‐crystalline epoxy resin was cured at two different temperatures. The phases of the cured systems clearly showed isotropic and nematic polydomain structures, which depended on the curing temperature. The fracture toughness of the systems was measured, and the fracture mechanism was investigated with polarized IR measurements. The nematic polydomain structure system showed considerably higher fracture toughness than the isotropic structure. Moreover, both systems exhibited a reorientation of the network chains near the fracture surface during the fracture process, and the region of the network reorientation in the nematic polydomain structure system was larger than that in the isotropic structure system. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Free-radical-induced polymerization of epoxides in the presence of maleic anhydride

The free-radical-induced reactions of cyclohexene oxide in the presence of maleic anhydride have been found to lead to polyether in presence of AIBN and to a mixture of polyether, ester, and maleic anhydride adduct of polyether with di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP), the amounts of the mixture components depending on the concentration of DTBP and the temperature. Analogous reactions in the presence of succinic anhydride lead to no polyether. The obtained polyether has no hydroxyl group. The reaction appears to consist of three different steps, radical initiation, cationic propagation, and radical termination.     

Spider silk violin strings with a unique packing structure generate a soft and profound timbre

We overcome the difficulties in pulling long draglines from spiders, twist bundles of dragline filaments, and succeed in preparing violin strings. The twisting is found to change the cross section shapes of filaments from circular to polygonal and to optimize the packing structure with no openings among filaments providing mechanically strong and elastic strings. The spider string signal peaks of overtones for the violin are relatively large at high frequencies, generating a soft and profound timbre. Such a preferable timbre is considered to be due to the unique polygonal packing structure which provides valuable knowledge for developing new types of materials.     

Development of zeolite-derived novel aluminosilicate phosphors

In this research, zeolite-derived aluminosilicate phosphors were synthesized through the ion exchange route. Red light-emitting property of Eu³⁺-doped aluminosilicate phosphors were discussed from a view point of the Eu content, heat-treatment condition and the oxidation state of Eu ions. The crystalline phase of the host aluminosilicates could be successfully controlled as designed based on the published NaAlO₂–SiO₂ binary phase diagram. Orange-red emission peaks derived from the ⁵D₀→⁷F_j (j=0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transition of Eu³⁺ were observed around 590–700 nm, and 4f⁶5d→4f⁷ transition of Eu²⁺ was observed at around 400–500 nm. The relative intensity I(⁵D₀→⁷F₂) of the dominant emission peak at 612 nm increased consistently with the Eu content. The results of the XANES spectroscopy analysis revealed that Eu²⁺ ion in the 1400 °C as heat-treated host aluminosilicate were successfully converted to Eu³⁺ by the additional annealing at 1100 °C. The Eu contents and heat-treatment conditions were determined to exhibit the best performance as a red phosphor, which were 10 wt% and 1500 °C, respectively     

Analysis of labor productivity using large-scale data of firm’s financial statements

We investigated labor productivity distribution by analyzing large-scale financial statement data consisting of listed and unlisted Japanese firms to clarify the characteristics of the Japanese labor market. Both high and low productivity sides of the labor productivity distribution follows the power-law distribution. Large inequality in the low productivity side was observed only for the manufacturing sectors in Japan fiscal year (JFY) 1999 and observed for both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors in JFY 2002. The decline in the Japanese GDP in JFY 1999 and JFY 2002 were coincided with the large inequality in the low productivity side of the distribution. A lower peak was found for all non-manufacturing sectors. This might be the origin of the low productivity of the non-manufacturing sectors reported in recent economic studies.     

Generalized phase-shifting algorithm for dynamic phase measurement in electron-wave interferometry

A generalized phase-shifting algorithm is implemented in the electron-wave interferometry with a transmission electron microscope, based on simultaneous measurement of the initial phases of the interferograms. The initial phase of each interferogram that has inherent linear carrier fringes is calculated using the Fourier co-efiicients of the interferogram itself corresponding to the carrier-frequency. Taking advantage of this phase-shifting method in both spatial resolution and precision, the phase distribution of a biological weak phase object is successfully measured. This promises to be one of the most spectacular application fields for this new technology.
