Contrasting Effect of Additives on Photoinduced Reactions of SmI2

The work described herein compares the effect of additives (HMPA, methanol, ethylene glycol, pinacol, N-methylethanolamine) on thermal and photochemical reactions of samarium diiodide (SmI₂). In thermal reactions, additives that coordinate to SmI₂ induce a significant increase in reaction rate. In photochemical reactions, the presence of an electronegative atom with a highly localized negative charge on the substrate leads to a rate deceleration. In order to benefit from the columbic interaction with the positively charged samarium cation, these substrates react preferentially by an inner sphere reduction mechanism. The addition of ligands prevents this close interaction causing rate retardation. Furthermore, studies demonstrate that excited state quenching of Sm^II by ethylene glycol and other additives indicate that it is unlikely to be the major cause for the observed rate retardation. This effect provides a simple diagnostic tool to distinguish between an inner and an outer sphere reduction mechanism.     

Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in inclusive electroproduction of π- near the Δ0 resonance

The parity-violating (PV) asymmetry of inclusive π- production in electron scattering from a liquid deuterium target was measured at backward angles. The measurement was conducted as a part of the G0 experiment, at a beam energy of 360 MeV. The physics process dominating pion production for these kinematics is quasifree photoproduction off the neutron via the Δ0 resonance. In the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, this asymmetry is related to a low-energy constant d(Δ)- that characterizes the parity-violating γNΔ coupling. Zhu et al. calculated d(Δ)- in a model benchmarked by the large asymmetries seen in hyperon weak radiative decays, and predicted potentially large asymmetries for this process, ranging from A(γ)-=-5.2 to +5.2 ppm. The measurement performed in this work leads to A(γ)-=-0.36±1.06±0.37±0.03 ppm (where sources of statistical, systematic and theoretical uncertainties are included), which would disfavor enchancements considered by Zhu et al. proportional to V(ud)/V(us). The measurement is part of a program of inelastic scattering measurements that were conducted by the G0 experiment, seeking to determine the N-Δ axial transition form factors using PV electron scattering.     

A Synthesis of the 4-Alkylamino-2,4-Dideoxy-l-threo-pentopyranose Components of the Calicheamicins and Esperamicins

Abstract

A general synthetic approach to enantiomerically pure 4-substituted 2,4-dideoxypentopyranosides has been developed which provides access to the 4-alkylamino-2,4-dideoxy-L-threo-pentopyranose components of the calicheamicins and esperamicins.     

Aqueous micro and nanoreactors based on alternating copolymers of phenylmaleimide and vinylpyrrolidone bearing pendant l‐proline stabilized with PEG grafted chains

Proline may work efficiently in water as catalyst of aldol reactions if it is hydrophobically activated. In this work, we have maximized this hydrophobic activation by the preparation of linear alternating copolymers of hydrophobic phenylmaleimide and a vinylpyrrolidone derivative bearing proline. These copolymers were water soluble above pH 5.0 and, unlike the free proline, exhibited efficient catalysis at pH 7.0. Moreover, they catalyzed and presented enantioselectivity in an aggregated form at pH 4.0 (close to the isoelectric point, IEP, of the polymer). This enantioselectivity has been related to the exclusion of water at this IEP. To control the size and stabilize the aggregates, PEG grafted copolymers were prepared by the incorporation of a PEG‐macromer (2–10 mol%), which rendered stable nano‐aggregates in water at the IEP. At this pH they catalyzed the aldol reaction in a higher rate than the non‐grafted polymer, but the enantioselectivity was decreased. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Global and local asymptotics for the busy period of an M/G/1 queue

We consider an M/G/1 queue with subexponential service times. We give a simple derivation of the global and local asymptotics for the busy period. Our analysis relies on the explicit formula for the joint distribution for the number of customers and the length of the busy period of an M/G/1 queue.     

Origin of the insulating state in NaCuO2

We study the electronic structure of NaCuO₂ by analysing experimental core level photoemission and X-ray absorption spectra using a cluster as well as an Anderson impurity Hamiltonianincluding the band structure of the oxygen sublattice. We show that the X-ray absorption results unambiguously establish a negative value of the charge transfer energy, Δ. Further, mean-field calculations for the edge-shared one-dimensional CuO₂ lattice of NaCuO₂ within the multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian show that the origin of the insulating nature lies in the band structure rather than in the correlation effects. LMTO-ASA band structure calculations suggest that NaCuO₂ is an insulator with a gap of around 1 eV.
