This is a non-technical survey of a recent theory of valuations on manifolds constructed in [A10], [A11], [AF] and [A12], and actually a guide to this series of articles. An investigation of the component composition of the essential oil of Monarda fistulosa

The composition of the essential oil of wild bergamot bee balm introduced into the Krasnodarsk Krai has been analyzed by chromatomass spectrometry. The essential oil contains 34 components of which the main ones are -pinene (3.5%), -pinene (2.9%), -terpinene (1.7%), p-cymene (32.5), an aliphatic aldehyde (6.3%), sabinene hydrate (1.9%), -caryophyllene (1.1%), the methyl ether of carvacrol (5.5%), citronellyl acetate (1.6%), thymol (12.6%), and carvacrol (24.0%). The compounds were identified on the basis of their mass-spectrometric characteristics and arithmetical retention indices.A. N. Quantum chemical calculations of the molecular structure of diphenylguanidine and experimental studies of its tautomerism in solution

MNDO-PM3 and AM1 quantum chemical calculations of the molecular structure of N,N′-diphenyl-guanidine (DPG) prove that the molecule preferably exists as an asymmetric tautomer with a basic center C = N−. IR and UV spectral data, dipole moments, and average molecular weights of DPG solutions in nonpolar and low-polar solvents confirm the results of calculations, indicating formation of hydrogen-bonded cyclic self-associates of DPG in solution. Towards a new edition of the “Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement”

The “Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement” (GUM) is an extremely important document. It unifies methods for calculating measurement uncertainty and enables the consistent interpretation and comparison of measurement results, regardless of who obtained these measurements and where they were obtained. Since the document was published in 1995, it has been realised that its recommendations do not properly address an important class of measurements, namely, non-linear indirect measurements. This drawback prompted the initiation of the revision of the GUM in the Working Group 1 of the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology, which commenced in October 2006. The upcoming revision of the GUM provides the metrological community with an opportunity to improve this important document, in particular, to reflect developments in metrology that have occurred since the first GUM publication in 1995. Thus, a discussion of the directions for this revision is important and timely. By identifying several shortcomings of the GUM and proposing directions for its improvement, we hope this article will contribute to this discussion. Papers published in this section do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Editors, the Editorial Board and the Publisher.

Forces acting on a stationary sphere in power-law fluid flow near the wall

The analysis and evaluation of the forces acting on the particle in a linear shear flow of power-law fluid (PLF) in the presence of the wall were performed. Using the results of a series of computations for a model problem with a spherical particle near a flat wall in the Reynolds number range of 0?200 and the distance to the wall from 0 to 20 particle diameters, the correlation formulas for calculating the coefficients of drag force and lift force were obtained. Special attention was paid to the behavior of the forces acting on the particle approaching the wall.
