Trinucleon cluster structure at high-excitation energies in A=6 nuclei

Trinucleon molecular structures in ⁶He and ⁶Be were investigated by using the ⁶Li(⁷Li, ⁷Be)⁶He reaction at 455 MeV and ⁶Li(³He, t)⁶Be reaction at 450 MeV, respectively. Binary decays into t + t from a broad state at E _x =18.0±1.0 MeV in ⁶He and into ³He + ³He from one at E _x =18.0±1.2 MeV in ⁶Be, respectively, were observed by measuring trinucleon cluster decays in coincidence with reaction particles. The branching ratios for binary decay were estimated to be about 0.7 for ⁶He and ⁶Be. These large branching ratios show that a trinucleon cluster state exists as an isobaric partner around E _x =18 MeV in ⁶He and ⁶Be.     

Electrical properties and memory effect in the field effect transistor based on organic ferroelectric insulator and pentacene

We have fabricated a field effect transistor (FET) based on an organic ferroelectric insulator and molecular conductor, and investigated the electrical properties and memory effects on the PEN-FET. We have observed a drastic change in the drain current at around the coercive electric fieldE _c of the organic ferroelectric insulator in not only a FET (PEN-FET) based on a pentacene (PEN) film but also a FET (IPEN-FET) based on an iodine doped PEN film. The magnitude of the change of the drain current for the IPEN-FET is 200 times larger than that for the PEN-FET. It is expected from these results that the PEN-FET (especially the IPEN-FET) is an improvement in such devices, since it operates at a low gate electric field accompanied by the appearance of the spontaneous polarization in the organic ferroelectric insulator. In addition, we have found that the drain current for the PEN-FET does not return to the initial drain current ofE _G =0 V/cm for more than one week, even if the gate electric field is changed to 0 V/cm from 500 V/cm(>E _c ). From these results, it is suggested that the PEN-FET becomes a memory device.     

Psychological evaluation of sound environment in a compartment of a high-speed train

Sound environment in a compartment of high-speed trains (Shinkansen) was examined in relation to speech communication and annoyance. Three experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, the annoyance caused by the compartment noise was judged. In Experiment 2, both the compartment noise and the conversation were presented together and the annoyance of the combined sounds was judged. In Experiment 3, both sounds were presented and only the disturbance of conversation was judged. The results showed that: The annoyance of compartment noise showed good correlation with L_Aeq. The annoyance of the combination of the compartment noise (N) and the conversation (C) increased as C/N decreased. There was, however, a tendency that annoyance increased as C/N increased in some conditions. This suggests that there exists an optimum level of compartment noise at 50-60 dBA taking the level of conversation into consideration. The disturbance of the conversation increased as C/N increased. However, when the level of conversation became high, it was judged as being disturbing regardless of the level of compartment noise.     

Preparation and certification of the new reference materials; plastics (disk form, JSAC 0621-0625) for determination of mercury using x-ray fluorescent analysis.

The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry has developed some new plastic certified reference materials (CRMs) for the analysis of mercury in polyester disks using XRF analysis. These CRMs (named as JSAC 0621-0625) were prepared by casting polyesters including a toluene solution of organometallic compounds as a standard. Concentrations of the five levels of mercury ranged from 0 to 250 mg/kg. Homogeneity tests of prepared disks had shown excellent results. Interlaboratory comparison study for the certification was performed by 15 laboratory participants. The z-scores in robust statistical method was applied for the evaluation of outliers. The certified values were assigned after discarding outliers. The uncertainties of certified values were determined as the confidence levels of 95%.     

Singlet and triplet photocycloaddition reactions of 2-pyridones with propenoate and 2,4-pentadienotes,and the frontier molecular orbital analysis

Regioselective photocycloadditions of 2-pyridones ( 1 ) with 2,4-pentadienoates ( 3 ) were analysed and compared with the reactions with propenoate ( 2 ), and origins of the different regioselectivities were inferred from frontier molecular orbital properties by the use of PM3-CI method. Direct photoreactions of 1 with 3 being α,β,γ,δ-unsaturated carboxylates gave four types of regio-selective [2+2]cycloadducts, 3-β:4-α-4, 5, 3-δ:4-γ-6,7,5-δ: 6-γ-8, 9 and 5-δ:6-γ-[2+2]cycloadducts 10,11. Sensitized photoreactions of 1 with 3 did not occur, and fluorescence of 1 was weakly quenched by 3. Otherwise, main cycloadducts in the sensitized reactions of 1 with 2 have been obtained as 5-α:6-β-[2+2]cycloadducts, which were different from main 3-β:4-α-[2+2]cycloadducts of the direct reactions, and these site-and regio-selectivities were inferred from the different frontier molecular orbital coefficients at the. 3-and 6-positions of 1 for the triplet and singlet states. Formations of 4–7 were also interpreted by both effects of frontier orbital HSOMO-LUMO interactions and of the electrostatic interaction between 1 and 3. The other site-and regioselective adducts 8–11 were inferred to be formed by the electrostatic interactions similar to 2-pyridone photodimerization.     

Simple and sensitive determination of methylglyoxal in biological samples by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection

Methylglyoxal was allowed to react with 4,5-dichloro-1,2-phenylenediamine, and the 6,7-dichloro-2-methylquinoxaline formed was determined by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection. The standard curve of the quinoxaline was linear up to 160 pmol/ml. The recoveries of methylglyoxal from coffee and rat liver homogenate were 84.1 and 77.6%, respectively. This procedure was very selective and so sensitive that as little as 9 fmol of the quinoxaline could be measured in biological and food samples.     

Hexakis(2-pyridyl)- and hexakis(3-pyridyl)[3]radialene: novel,water-soluble [3]radialenes with potential utility for supramolecular chemistry

The titled [3]radialenes are the first, water-soluble hexaaryl[3]radialenes with considerably high electron affinity, their alkali metal reduction giving rise to anion-radicals and dianions stepwise as fairly stable species in degassed tetrahydrofuran.     

Evaluation of thyroid scintigraphy in small animals

Thyroid scintigraphy in rats and mice with 99mTc and 123I was attempted to examine whether this modality might be used in small animals and to describe the possibilities of its application in examining experimentally produced thyroid diseases. A human gamma camera with a pinhole collimator improved for small animals was used for imaging. Thyroid images with 99mTc were obtained 20 minutes after injection and those with 123I were 24 hours after administration. All the scintigrams, although those obtained from mice with 99mTc displayed overlapped salivary gland images, demonstrated sufficiently clear images in size and shape, which showed that thyroid scintigraphy in small animals should be applicable in examining experimentally produced thyroid diseases.     

Total Synthesis of Natural PI-091, a New Platelet Aggregation Inhibitor of Microbial Origin

The total synthesis of a new platelet aggregation-inhibiting gamma-lactam PI-091 (1) gave a 1:1 diastereomeric mixture at the gamma-ketal carbon. The high-yielding aldol reaction of an appropriately protected 1,3,4-trihydroxy-4-methyldecan-2-one 42, prepared from D-glucose, with the kinetically generated enolate of 3-methyl-2-butanone provided 43. The resulting diastereomeric mixture of the aldol adduct 43 was converted to a 2,4-alkylated furan 45 via an intramolecular ketalization followed by dehydration. The addition of a singlet oxygen to the alpha-trimethylsilylated furan 48derived from 45 under photochemical conditions efficiently provided an alpha,gamma-dialkylated gamma-hydroxy gamma-lactone 47. The transformation of methyl ketal 52 prepared from 47 into gamma-hydroxy gamma-lactam 53 was achieved by exposure to liquid ammonia in MeOH. The total synthesis of 1 was achieved from 52 through the Dess-Martin periodinane oxidation of the secondary hydroxy group in the side chain. The present total synthesis revealed that the stereogenic carbon center in the side chain in natural 1 is S.
