Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopic studies of novel mixed valence states in cobaltous ferrocyanides and ferricyanides

Novel mixed valence states have been obtained by the treatment of cobaltous ferrocyanides (Co⁺²Fe^II) and ferricyanides (Co⁺²Fe^III) in an ozone flow. The CN stretching bands occur at 2085 cm^–1 for Co⁺²Fe^II and at 2160 cm^–1 for Co⁺²Fe^III. After the ozonization process of Co⁺²Fe^II, an intense band approximately at 2125 cm^–1 is detected. This intermediate band must correspond to a mixed valence state of the type: Fe^II–CN–Co²⁺–NC–Fe^III Mössbauer spectra recorded in situ during the ozonization of Co⁺²Fe^II show the presence of two components: a doublet with isomer shift and quadrupole splitting values close to the cobalti ferricyanide and a very broad line for the mixed valence state. From the Mössbauer and infrared spectra of the aged samples of the Co⁺²Fe^II after ozonization, a relaxation process to the initial state of the samples is observed but the mixed valence state is stable.     

Cubic phases as structures of disclinations

We look for possible ordered geometrical configurations with bicontinuous or cellular topologies, optimizing the frustration of a periodic system of frustrated fluid films. The solutions found have the same symmetries as those observed for cubic phases of amphiphilic molecules. This agreement leads to consider cubic structures as structures of defects of rotation, or disclinations.This paper was presented at the workshop Ringing gels and Cubic phases, University of Bayreuth, October 25–26th, 1988.     

Retrosynthetic analysis of fullerene C(60): structure, stereochemistry, and calculated stability of C(30) fragments.

The total number of possible retrosynthetic bisections of C(60) leads to nine different isometric C(30) fragments. These molecules include five chiral units, four of which derive from partitions corresponding to four distinct "Coupes du Roi". The energies, curvatures, and homodesmotic stabilization energies of the C(30) fragments are evaluated at the ab initio 6-31G level.     

The Laguerre polyhedral decomposition: application to protein folds

An extension of the Voronoi tessellation, the Laguerre polyhedral decomposition, is introduced and applied to the analysis of the packing geometry of amino-acids in folded proteins. This method considers an ensemble of points with different weights and therefore it is well suited for a geometrical analysis of a set of objects with a wide size distribution. With this method it is shown that the true volumes occupied by the amino-acids inside a protein is better described than with the standard Voronoi procedure. This method allows defining unambiguously (without cut-off distance) the neighborhood for each amino-acid in a given protein and contact matrices can be established which contain all topological informations on the internal structure. Finally, a statistical analysis of the geometrical characteristics of the polyhedra attached to each amino-acid is done over a collection of 35 proteins. Search for color singlet technicolor particles in p&pmacr; collisions at radicals = 1.8 TeV

We search for color singlet technirho and technipion production in p&pmacr; collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. These exotic technimesons are present in a model of walking technicolor. The signatures studied are lepton plus two jets plus E(T) and multijet final states. No excess of events is seen in either final state. We set an upper limit on the technirho production cross section and exclude a region in the technipion mass versus technirho mass plane.
