High-temperature series expansions of the susceptibility and second moment to 15th order are calculated for zero external field on the linear chain (LC), plane square (PSQ), simple cubic (SC), and body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices. Checks for specific models against pertinent work in the literature are detailed.     

Differential inhibition of postnatal brain,spinal cord and body growth by a growth hormone antagonist

Background  

Growth hormone (GH) plays an incompletely understood role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we use transgenic mice expressing a growth hormone antagonist (GHA) to explore the role of GH in regulating postnatal brain, spinal cord and body growth into adulthood. The GHA transgene encodes a protein that inhibits the binding of GH to its receptor, specifically antagonizing the trophic effects of endogenous GH.

The cyclopentadienylnickel complex (2) and the parent dimethyl norbornadienedicarboxylate (4) each react with 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,5-dimethoxycyclopentadiene (3) on the less hindred exo-face of the dienophile to produce anti-sequinorbornane adducts 5 and 6. X-ray crystal structures of these adducts have been determined and refined to R values of 0.029 and 0.042 respectively.     

Evaluating reproducibility and similarity of mass and intensity data in complex spectra—applications to tubulin

We present a data processing approach based on the spectral dot product for evaluating spectral similarity and reproducibility. The method introduces 95% confidence intervals on the spectral dot product to evaluate the strength of spectral correlation; it is the only calculation described to date that accounts for both the non-normal sampling distribution of the dot product and the number of peaks the spectra have in common. These measures of spectral similarity allow for the recursive generation of a consensus spectrum, which incorporates the most consistent features from statistically similar replicate spectra. Taking the spectral dot product and 95% confidence intervals between consensus spectra from different samples yields the similarity between these samples. Applying the data analysis scheme to replicates of brain tubulin CNBr peptides enables a robust comparison of tubulin isotype expression and post-translational modification patterns in rat and cow brains.     

Transfer measurements for the Ti+Ni systems at near barrier energies

Large enhancements have been observed in the sub-barrier fusion cross sections for Ti+Ni systems in our previous studies. Coupled channel calculations incorporating couplings to 2⁺ and 3⁻ states failed to explain these enhancements completely. A possibilty of transfer channels contributing to the residual enhancements had been suggested. In order to investigate the role of relevant transfer channels, measurements of one- and two-nucleon transfer were carried out for ^46,48Ti+⁶¹Ni systems. The present paper gives the results of these studies.     

Spontaneous patterning of confined granular rods

Vertically vibrated rod-shaped granular materials confined to quasi-2D containers self-organize into distinct patterns. We find, consistent with theory and simulation, a density dependent isotropic-nematic transition. Along the walls, rods interact sterically to form a wetting layer. For high rod densities, complex patterns emerge as a result of competition between bulk and boundary alignment. A continuum elastic energy accounting for nematic distortion and local wall anchoring reproduces the structures seen experimentally.

Probing the Hydrodynamic Behavior of Drug-Induced Tubulin Rings by Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy

We describe fluorescence correlation spectroscopy measurements of tubulin polymers composed of tubulin and either of two cytotoxic peptides – dolastatin 10 and cryptophycin 1. These peptides inhibit tubulin polymerization into microtubules, a major component of cellular networks, and instead induce the formation of predominantly single-walled tubulin rings. We determine ratios of the hydrodynamic diameter of dolastatin-tubulin or cryptophycin-tubulin polymers to that of tubulin dimers, which are compared with corresponding ratios calculated for two simple models: 1) a circular ring made with N contiguous spherical beads and 2) a circular ring constructed with N non-spherical monomers, each monomer being represented by 21-minibeads. We find that the computed ratios from the 21-minibead representation agree well with the measured ones when N = 28 and N = 16 for dolastatin-tubulin and cryptophycin-tubulin ring polymers, respectively. That is, the rings are made with 14 and 8 tubulin dimers, confirming the numbers derived by other techniques. The present results further support the applicability of theories that have been developed for calculating hydrodynamic properties of supramolecular biological structures.     

Iron-catalyzed Doyle-Kirmse reaction of allyl sulfides with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane

[formula: see text] Iron salts efficiently catalyze the Doyle-Kirmse reaction of allyl sulfides with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane and ethyl diazoacetate in dichloroethane at 83 degrees C. Competitive dimerization is less of a problem with (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane than with ethyl diazoacetate. Good results are obtained using only 1.5 equiv of (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane, even without slow addition. Phosphine ligands affect the kinetics, but not the diastereoselectivity. Dppe and BINAP lead to higher yields than dppp, but no enantioselection was detected with R-(+)-BINAP.
