Multidimensional potential energy landscapes (PELs) have a Gaussian distribution for the energies of the minima, but at the same time the distribution of the hyperareas for the basins of attraction surrounding the minima follows a power-law. To explore how both these features can simultaneously be true, we introduce an “egg-box” model. In these model landscapes, the Gaussian energy distribution is used as a starting point and we examine whether a power-law basin area distribution can arise as a natural consequence through the swallowing up of higher-energy minima by larger low-energy basins when the variance of this Gaussian is increased sufficiently. Although the basin area distribution is substantially broadened by this process, it is insufficient to generate power-laws, highlighting the role played by the inhomogeneous distribution of basins in configuration space for actual PELs.  相似文献

The electron impact induced fragmentations of twelve pyridine derivatives are discussed. The fragmentation pattern of these compounds is strongly influenced by the number of methylene groups as well as the position of substitution in the pyridine nucleus. By means of mass spectrometry a differentiation between the 2-pyridyl and the 4-pyridyl derivatives is possible and this fact could be important with respect to an analytical identification of the compounds.  相似文献

Abstract— The host cell reactivation (HCR) mechanism in Haemophilus influenzae cells is inhibited by sub-microgram concentrations of acriflavine (as is already known to be true for Escherichia coli ). Exposure of these cells to similar concentrations of the drug during bacterial transformation increases the apparent ultraviolet light (u.v.) sensitivity of previously irradiated transforming DNA, indicating a repair of this DNA after uptake by the cells under normal conditions. Repair is inhibited by applying acriflavine at any time up to one hour after competent cells contact the irradiated transforming DNA. The fraction of the u.v. damage repaired by HCR is very different for different genetic markers. Those markers which are most u.v. sensitive when assayed in the absence of acriflavine are most poorly repaired, suggesting that this is the reason for their higher sensitivity. For all markers the fraction of the damage repairable by in vitro photoreactivation is approximately constant, and strongly overlaps the damage repairable by HCR. The degree of HCR achieved can be altered by experimental treatment of the H. influenzae DNA prior to transformation. Thus treatment of irradiated DNA with an enzyme from Micrococcus lysodeikticus –known to attack u.v. damaged, but not undamaged DNA–prevents subsequent intracellular repair of the same u.v. lesions whose repair is inhibited by acriflavine. Similarly, partial replacement of the thymine in transforming DNA by 5-bromouracil (BU) strongly inhibits repair of subsequent u.v. damage. As in bacteriophage, the BU effect is relieved if the u.v. exposure occurs in the presence of cysteamine. It is clear that intracellular repair must be considered in interpreting experiments with u.v.-irradiated transforming DNA.  相似文献

Four carotenoids, 3,4,7,8-tetrahydrospheroidene, 3,4,5,6-tetrahydrospheroidene, 3,4-dihydrospheroidene and spheroidene, have been incorporated into the B850 light-harvesting complex of the carotenoidless mutant, photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides R-26.1. The extent of π-electron conjugation in these molecules increases from 7 to 10 carbon-carbon double bonds. Carotenoid-to-bacteriochlorophyll singlet state energy transfer efficiencies were measured using steady-state fluorescence excitation spectroscopy to be 54 ± 2%, 66 ± 4%, 71 ± 6% and 56 ± 3% for the carotenoid series. These results are discussed with respect to the position of the energy levels and the magnitude of spectral overlap between the S, (2′AJ state emission from the isolated carotenoids and the bacteriochlorophyll absorption of the native complex. These studies provide a systematic approach to exploring the effect of excited state energies, spectral overlap and excited state lifetimes on the efficiencies of carotenoid-to-bacteriochlorophyll singlet energy transfer in photosynthetic systems.  相似文献

The relation of the solution and bioactive conformation of sialyl Lewis x (sLe(x)) has been addressed by chemical means. To mimic the preferred solution conformation of sLe(x) 1, the more rigid analog 2 has been designed and synthesized. The sialic acid residue of 1 was replaced by a carboxylic acid function which is fixed in the equatorial position of a six membered ring acetal fused to galactose. Due to entropic considerations, an increased biological activity could be expected if the preferred solution conformation and bound form of sLe(x) were similar. Since mimic 2 was found to be inactive in an E-selectin binding assay, the bound form of sLe(x) most probably differs from the prevailing solution conformation.  相似文献

A ferroelectric crosslinkable liquid crystalline copolysiloxane exhibiting broad chiral smectic C* and smectic A phases was synthesized and aligned by spin-coating from solution. The homeotropic orientation of the mesogens was checked by polarizing microscopy and X-ray scattering measurements. Crosslinking in the smectic A phase using UV-irradiation stabilizes the spin-coated films mechanically and fixes the monodomain orientation of the smectic A phase. Freestanding Ferroelectric Elastomer Films (FFEF) can be obtained by removing the substrate.  相似文献
