Phase state stabilization of ammonium nitrate for creating an oxidizing agent for smokeless gas-generating formulations yielding no toxic combustion products

Methods for phase stabilization of ammonium nitrate were sought for in order to considerably expand the application area of this oxidizing agent in various-purpose self-combustible formulations, including that in a new generation of gas-generating formulations for automobile air bags. New methods for stabilization of ammonium nitrate were studied and, in particular, a search was made for organic compounds that can stabilize ammonium nitrate even at their low content. The mechanism of phase state stabilization of ammonium nitrate by compounds of this kind was examined.

Nature of the “yield tooth” under torsion in plastic-deformed whiskers

The plastic torsion of whiskers with high Peierls barriers has been studied. As the samples for the studies we chose p-type germanium whiskers with <111> growth axis. The diameter of the whisker was (5–60)·10^–6 m and the gauge length was (1–4)·10^–3 m. The whiskers were dislocation-free in the initial state. Within the framework of the continuum model developed by us for the plastic deformation of whiskers under torsion, we analyze the anomalies of the torsional stress-strain diagram under different testing conditions and with preliminary deformation. The flow tooth during the torsion of a whisker is attributable to the nonuniform distribution of dislocations over the cross section of the whisker and high barriers to the dislocation motion.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 7, pp. 3–8, July, 1987.

A study of the primary photochemical processes occurring in proteins

Solutions of aromatic amino acids irradiated with ultraviolet light at 77° K have been found to form products responsible for the photofading of the fluorescence of the initial molecules. Luminescent in the yellow-green portion of the spectrum, these products are considered to be free radicals. In the case of tyrosine, the luminescence excitation spectrum appears to be determined by the phenoxy radical. The formation of tryptophan radicals involves an intermediate stage in which the initial molecule probably passes through a triplet state.     

X-ray topography analysis of bulk acoustic wave resonators

X-ray topography is first used to totally examine the fundamental modes of acoustic oscillations in the bulk-acoustic-wave (BAW) resonator on the base of an AT-cut quartz crystal at the first and third harmonics. As is evident from the experiments, the anharmonic longitudinal oscillations of the resonator can be visualized, just as the fundamental transverse acoustic oscillations can be. The amplitude-frequency response (AFR) is related to the frequency dependence of diffracted x-ray intensity.     

Rotational instability of filamentary crystals undergoing plastic deformation
