In many generic combustion models, one finds that a combustionwave will develop with a specific wave speed. However, thereare possible initial temperature profiles which do not evolveinto such waves, but rather die out to the ambient temperature. There can exist, in some models, a clear distinction betweenthose initial conditions that do evolve into combustion wavesand those that do not; this is sometimes referred to as thewatershed initial condition. When fuel consumption is consideredto be negligible, analytical methods can be used to obtain theexact watershed. In this paper, we consider the problem of determiningpseudo-watersheds and ascertaining the relationship betweenthese pseudo-watersheds and the exact watersheds. In the processa novel weight-function approach for infinite spatial domainsis developed. 相似文献

Are higher-dimensional black holes uniquely determined by their mass and spin? Do non-spherical black holes exist in higher dimensions? This essay explains how the answers to these questions have been supplied by the discovery of a new five-dimensional black hole solution. The existence of this solution implies that five-dimensional black holes exhibit much richer dynamics than their four-dimensional counterparts. 相似文献

Total and differential cross sections for the reactions p + d → 3He + m
0 with m=π, η and p + d → 3H+π+ were measured with the GEM detector at COSY for beam momenta between threshold and the maximum of the corresponding baryon
resonance. For both reactions a strong forward-backward asymmetry was found. The data were compared with model calculations.
The aspect of isospin symmetry breaking is studied.

The vacuum Einstein equations in five dimensions are shown to admit a solution describing a stationary asymptotically flat spacetime regular on and outside an event horizon of topology S1xS2. It describes a rotating "black ring." This is the first example of a stationary asymptotically flat vacuum solution with an event horizon of nonspherical topology. The existence of this solution implies that the uniqueness theorems valid in four dimensions do not have simple five-dimensional generalizations. It is suggested that increasing the spin of a spherical black hole beyond a critical value results in a transition to a black ring, which can have an arbitrarily large angular momentum for a given mass. 相似文献
