We demonstrate a technique to measure hyperfine structure using a frequency-stabilized diode laser and an acousto-optic modulator locked to the frequency difference between two hyperfine peaks. We use this technique to measure hyperfine intervals in the 5 P 3/2 state of 85Rb and obtain a precision of 20 kHz. We extract values for the magnetic-dipole coupling constant A = 25.038(5) MHz and the electric-quadrupole coupling constant B = 26.011(22) MHz. These values are a significant improvement over previous results. Received 6 March 2003 Published online 15 April 2003  相似文献

It is common belief among physicists that entangled states of quantum systems lose their coherence rather quickly. The reason is that any interaction with the environment which distinguishes between the entangled sub-systems collapses the quantum state. Here we investigate entangled states of two trapped Ca+ ions and observe robust entanglement lasting for more than 20 s.  相似文献

Laser cooling and trapping of Yb from a thermal source   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We have successfully loaded a magneto-optic trap for Yb atoms from a thermal source without the use of a Zeeman slower. The source is placed close to the trapping region so that it provides a large flux of atoms that can be cooled and captured. The atoms are cooled on the transition at 398.9 nm. We have loaded all seven stable isotopes of Yb into the trap including the rarest isotope, 168Yb. For the most abundant isotope (174Yb), we load more than 108 atoms into the trap within 1 s. We have characterized the source by studying the loading rate and the loss rate for different isotopes and at different trapping powers. We extract values for the loss rate due to collisions and due to branching into low-lying metastable levels. At the highest trap densities, we find evidence of additional loss due to intra-trap collisions.Received: 15 February 2004, Published online: 23 March 2004PACS: 32.80.Pj Optical cooling of atoms; trapping - 42.50.Vk Mechanical effects of light on atoms, molecules, electrons, and ions  相似文献

The present article gives a review of various photoassociation (PA) experiments performed at ENS with a gas of ultracold atoms of metastable helium in the 23S1 state, using a PA laser beam red-detuned from the 23S1-23P transitions. Molecular spectra close to the D2 atomic line (23S P2) are presented. All the measured lines are identified as a signature of molecular bound states having a strong (if not pure) quintet spin character at short interatomic distance. Close to the D0 atomic line (23S P0), giant helium dimers can be produced [see Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 073203 (2003)]. A laser set-up improved recently allows us to measure very accurately the binding energy of the ro-vibrational ground state of the 0 u + purely long-range potential and the agreement with the theory published previously is excellent. Finally, preliminary results on 2 photon PA spectroscopy are given.Received: 1 July 2004, Published online: 26 October 2004PACS: 32.80.Pj Optical cooling of atoms trapping - 33.20.Kf Visible molecular spectra - 34.50.Gb Electronic excitation and ionization of molecules - 34.20.Cf Interatomic potentials and forcesJ. We demonstrate two techniques for studying the features of three-level systems driven by two lasers (called control and probe), when the transitions are Doppler broadened as in room-temperature vapor. For -type systems, the probe laser is split to produce a counter-propagating pump beam that saturates the transition for the zero-velocity atoms. Probe transmission then shows Doppler-free peaks which can even have sub-natural linewidth. For V-type systems, the transmission of the control beam is detected as the probe laser is scanned. The signal shows Doppler-free peaks when the probe laser is resonant with transitions for the zero-velocity group. Both techniques greatly simplify the study of three-level systems since theoretical predictions can be directly compared without complications from Doppler broadening and the presence of multiple hyperfine levels in the spectrum.Received: 10 September 2003, Published online: 6 January 2004PACS: 42.50.Gy Effects of atomic coherence on propagation, absorption, and amplification of light; electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption - 42.50.-p Quantum optics  相似文献

We present a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length a of spin-polarized helium atoms in the 2(3)S1 metastable state. Using two-photon photoassociation spectroscopy and dark resonances, we measure the energy E(nu)=14= -91.35+/- 0.06 MHz of the least-bound state nu = 14 in the interaction potential of the two atoms. We deduce a value of a=7.512+/-0.005 nm, which is at least 100 times more precise than the best previous determinations and is in disagreement with some of them. This experiment also demonstrates the possibility to create exotic molecules binding two metastable atoms with a lifetime of the order of 1 micros.  相似文献
