Intersubband spectroscopy of two dimensional electron gases: Coulomb interactions

We have made a direct determination of resonant screening (the depolarization field effect) in the collective intersubband excitations of a dense two dimensional electron gas. The effect was observed, for both odd and even parity transitions, in polarized inelastic light scattering spectra of a modulation-doped GaAs-AlGaAs superlattice. We offer a quantitative interpretation in terms of the Coulomb matrix elements for the transitions. Final state, or exciton-like, many-body effects are considered briefly.     

Some Isoperimetric Inequalities in Electrochemistry and Hele Shaw Flows

Isoperimetric inequalities are applied to a moving-boundaryproblem for doubly-connected domains. This problem occurs forexample in electrochemistry, in which case the domains in questionare the electrolyte of an electrolytic cell. The two electrodessurrounding the electrolyte are assumed to grow or dissolve,at different rates in general, by electrochemical reaction.We obtain optimal estimates showing, for example, that the leastchange in volume of each electrode always occurs in sphericalsymmetry.     

Contraction of the well-tempered Gaussian basis sets: The first-row diatomic molecules

The well-tempered Gaussian basis sets (14s 10p) for atoms from lithium to neon were contracted and used in restricted Hartree–Fock calculations on 13 systems: Li₂(Σ), B₂(Σ), C₂(Σ), N₂(Σ), O₂(Σ), F₂(Σ), Ne₂(Σ), LiF(Σ), BeO(Σ), BF(Σ), CN^?(Σ), CO(Σ), and NO⁺(Σ). Spectroscopic constants (R_e, ω_e, ω_ex_e, B_e, α_e, and k_e) and one-electron properties (dipole, quadrupole, and octupole moments at the center of mass and electric field, electric field gradient, potential, and electron density at the nuclei) were evaluated and compared with the Hartree–Fock results. The largest contracted basis set (7_s6_p3_d) gives results very close to the Hartree–Fock values; the remaining differences are attributed to the absence of the f functions in the present basis sets. For Ne₂, the interaction energy was calculated; the magnitude of the basis-set superposition error was found to be very small (less than 3 μE_h at 2.8 a₀ and less than 2 μE_h at 5.0 a₀).     

MODELING CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE EFFECT ON THE NORWEGIAN SALMON FARMING INDUSTRY

Abstract Global warming is expected to affect the ecosystem in the Northeast Atlantic, and substantial changes will also affect the aquaculture industry. Farming of salmon and trout is the biggest aquaculture industry in Norway, with an export value of about 3 billion US dollars in 2007. The objective of the paper is to analyze the potential economic effect a general increase in sea temperature can have on the Norwegian salmon aquaculture industry. The assessment of the economic impact of global warming is made possible by estimating a growth function, which explicitly includes sea water temperature. The analysis compares the economic effect of a climate change on fish farming plants in the south and the north of Norway. The scenarios are based on a model with monthly seasonal variation in temperature.
