An efficient total synthesis of sulfobacin A

A short and efficient enantioselective synthesis of sulfobacin A has been achieved using the Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation and the regiospecific nucleophilic opening of a cyclic sulfate as the key steps.     

Rapid and efficient removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution by potassium hexa-titanate: A radiotracer study

The adsorption of mercury(II) on potassium titanate has been studied in chloride media at different pH values, adsorbate concentrations and temperatures. Effect of different ligands and acid concentrations on the uptake was also investigated. Desoprtion studies were also done to check the reversibility of the process. Interestingly a more or less constant and high value of adsorption has been found at different temperatures, pH values and concentrations and a decrease in the uptake with an increase in the bulk acid concentration was observed.     

Synthesis of novel chiral spirodione, (6R,7R)-7-phenyl-1-oxaspiro[5.5]undec-3-ene-2,5-dione: application to the asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction with high π-facial selectivity

The synthesis of the title spirodione, a new class of auxiliary based chiral synthon using (−)-trans-2-phenylcyclohexanol and its application to the asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction are described. Methodology for detachment of the chiral auxiliary from the cycloadduct has been developed.     

Synthesis and structural characterisation of a novel tris-methylene bridged compound (NO) 4Fe2 Se(μ-CH2)3

The tris-methylene bridged compound (NO)₄Fe₂Se(μ-CH₂)₃ has been isolated. It has been characterised by IR and ¹H, ¹³C, and ⁷⁷Se NMR spectroscopy. Its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The structure consists of a heavy atom triangle consisting of one Se and two Fe atoms. The Fe-Fe and the two Fe-Se edges are bridged by methylene groups.     

Intramolecular nitrone cycloaddition reaction on carbohydrate-based precursors: application in the synthesis of spironucleosides and spirobisnucleosides

A simple synthesis of chiral spironucleosides and spirobisnucleosides is described. Intramolecular 1,3-dipolar nitrone cycloaddition reaction of d-glucose-derived precursors having olefin at C-3 and nitrone at C-5, C-1, or C-2 (in nor-series) furnished bisisoxazolidinospirocycles 4-7, 11, and 12 in good yields. Reductive ring opening of the isoxazolidine moieties in 4-6 followed by construction of a nucleoside base upon the generated amino groups smoothly yielded spirobisnucleosides 17 and 18 and spironucleosides 20 and 21.     

Glycidyl methacrylate–tert-butyl acrylate copolymers: Synthesis,characterization, and thermal studies

Glycidyl methacrylate was copolymerized with tert-butyl acrylate in bulk at 60°C using benzoyl peroxide as free radical initiator. The copolymer composition was determined by chemical analysis as well as from ¹³C-NMR data. The monomer reactivity ratios were calculated by using the YBR method. The number average sequence length of the copolymers was determined from ¹³C-NMR data and compared with those obtained from reactivity ratios. The intrinsic viscosity of the copolymers was determined in DMF, and thermal stability as well as mechanism of thermal degradation of the copolymers were evaluated.     

Extracellular pH influences the mode of cell death in human colon adenocarcinoma cells subjected to photodynamic treatment with chlorin p6

Effect of varying extracellular pH on mode of cell death induced by photodynamic action of chlorin p6 was investigated in human colon carcinoma (Colo-205) cells. At an extracellular pH of 7.4, compared to cells treated with chlorin p6 in dark, the photodynamically treated cells showed reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential, an increase in ADP/ATP ratio (1:2) and a large percentage of cells with chromatin condensation. In contrast, when photodynamic treatment and post irradiation incubation was carried out in acidic medium (pH 6.5), total loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, a marked increase in ADP/ATP ratio (1:33) and increased damage to plasma membrane were observed. Further, cells subjected to photodynamic treatment in a medium of pH 7.4 showed twofold increase in caspase-3 activity as compared to photodynamic treatment at pH 6.5. These results suggest that chlorin p6 mediated photodynamic action induces apoptotic cell death when extracellular pH is 7.4 whereas necrosis is more predominant under condition when extracellular pH is 6.5.     

A simple green procedure for the synthesis of 2H-azirines

An efficient and environmentally friendly method preparing 2H-azirines in good yield has been achieved by microwave irradiation of vinyl azides in solvent free conditions.     

Enantioselective synthesis of (R)-phenylephrine hydrochloride

An efficient method for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure (R)-phenylephrine hydrochloride 1 is described using a Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation as the key step.     

Methods for the preparation of mercury and osmium samples suitable for ion microprobe measurements

Using radiotracer solutions of Hg (²⁰³Hg) and Os (¹⁸⁵Os), techniques have been developed for sampling these elements presumably suitable for ion probe measurements. Mercury has been electrodeposited on the cross-sectional area (5 mm²) of an electrochemically pure Cu wire giving a recovery 25 to 30% at the tip. Similar efficiency is found for Hg distillate solutions. Osmium has been collected in a Ni–NiS bead after loading its thiourea complex solution on filter paper. The recovery in the bead is 80–90%. These methods should be of help for isotopic study of these elements by ion microprobe. The suitability of these samples for measurements remains unconfirmed.
