Spatial coherence and coherent interactions of broadband dispersed laser beams

Analytical expressions are obtained that describe the changes in the degree of coherence and in the thickness of the coherence layers occurring upon propagation of a dispersed broadband laser beam. It is found that the greater the tilting of the coherence layers with respect to the phase fronts, the more rapidly the spatial coherence is violated with increasing distance. A comparison with the case of an undispersed beam is performed. It is shown that, as the beam propagates, the decrease in the degree of coherence is accompanied by the appearance of spatial fluctuations of this parameter. The degree of mutual coherence of intersecting dispersed beams with parallel correlated coherence layers, which determines the efficiency of their coherent interaction, is investigated. The existence of spatial fluctuations of the degree of mutual coherence is established.     

One-loop counterterms in 2d dilaton-Maxwell quantum gravity

The renormalization structure of two-dimensional quantum gravity is investigated in a covariant gauge. One-loop divergences of the effective action are calculated. All the surface divergent terms are taken into account thus completing previous one-loop calculations of the theory. It is shown that the on-shell effective action contains only surface divergences. The off-shell renormalizability of the theory is discussed and classes of renormalizable dilaton and Maxwell potentials are found.     

Strings at nonzero temperature

String theory at nonzero temperature is reviewed. A bosonic string at nonzero temperature is studied and the calculation of its free energy in both the one-loop approximation and the case of arbitrary genus (multiloop analysis) is discussed. A string at nonzero temperature is compared with a string compacted on a one-dimensional torus. The properties of modular invariance and dual symmetry are discussed at both the one-loop and multiloop levels. The thermodynamics of superstrings, including also superstrings compactified on a torus, is also studied. Possible cosmological applications are briefly considered. It is shown that many features of string thermodynamics (in particular, the existence of the Hagedorn temperature and dual symmetry) also occur in the theory of noncritical strings.Translated from Izvestiya Vysshykh Uchebnykh Zavedenii, Fizika, No. 12, pp. 3–49, December, 1991.     

Behavior of effective charges in e6 grand unification theory in curved spacetime

The behavior of effective charges _i(t) corresponding to the parameters of nonminimal coupling of scalar and gravitational fields in E₆ Grand Unification Theory (GUT) in curve spacetimes is studied. One-loop divergence in dilation gravitation with neutral fermions

Covariant quantization is considered for a (1+1)-dimensional four-fermion model interacting with general-form dilation gravitation: the coefficients to all the terms are arbitrary functions of the dilaton field. In particular, detailed studies have been made of the Majorana case, the Gross-Neveu model, and extension of it containing an axial-scalar current term. The divergence of the one-loop effective action is derived and a study is made of the structure of the off-shell renormalizations. Finally, there is a discussion of renormalization in the sense of a generalized model, and expressions are given for the corresponding functionals.Single-Crystals Institute, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
