Age-dependent transient shear banding in soft glasses

We study numerically the formation of long-lived transient shear bands during shear startup within two models of soft glasses (a simple fluidity model and an adapted "soft glassy rheology" model). The degree and duration of banding depends strongly on the applied shear rate, and on sample age before shearing. In both models the ultimate steady flow state is homogeneous at all shear rates, consistent with the underlying constitutive curve being monotonic. However, particularly in the soft glassy rheology case, the transient bands can be extremely long lived. The banding instability is neither "purely viscous" nor "purely elastic" in origin, but is closely associated with stress overshoot in startup flow.

Vocal warm-up produces acoustic change in singers' vibrato rate

Vibrato rate and vibrato extent were acoustically assessed in 12 classically trained female singers before and after 25 minutes of vocal warm-up exercises. Vocal warm-up produced three notable changes in vibrato rate: (1)?more regularity in the cyclic undulations comprising the vibrato rate of a note, (2) more stability in mean vibrato rates from one sustained note to the next, and (3) a moderating of excessively fast and excessively slow mean vibrato rates. No significant change was found for vibrato extent. The findings indicate that vocal warm-up may regulate vibrato rate. Thus tone quality, which is strongly linked to vibrato characteristics, may undergo positive change as a result of vocal warm-up.     

Phosphorus-nitrogen-phosphorus ligands: cooperative effects between nitrogen and phosphorus substituents on catalytic activity

A new generation of PNP compounds bearing different diarylphosphine groups were prepared and used as ligands in palladium-catalysed Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. Rates of oxidative addition of iodobenzene to (PNP)Pd[0] complexes were measured using UV spectroscopy. Synergistic effects between the N- and P- substituents were identified and correlated in redox and catalytic chemistry.
