Light propagation in uniform arrays of photonic crystal waveguides is studied. We demonstrate that, in stark contrast to the case of conventional waveguide arrays, diffraction can be tailored both in magnitude and sign by varying only the spacing between adjacent waveguides. Diffraction management in ultracompact arrays of straight photonic crystal waveguides is demonstrated by solving Maxwell's equations through the time-domain finite-element method.  相似文献

We present analytical, numerical and experimental results of the interactions between Type II vectorial spatial solitary waves (QSSW) in second-order non-linear media. We show that the outcome of the interaction can be changed from beam coalescence to steering, crossing or repulsion through a non-coherent control (i.e. the control does not rely on the relative phase between the interacting QSSW). We also provide experimental evidence that both quasi-elastic and inelastic collision between QSSW are feasible in second order non-linear media, depending on the relative velocity of the interacting QSSW. We determine (analytically, numerically and experimentally) the critical transverse velocity for elastic collision to be observed, when the fundamental frequency component of the two interacting beams are orthogonally polarized at the input face of the non-linear crystal.  相似文献

We report a systematic analysis of anomalous refractive effects at interfaces between two photonic crystal waveguide arrays. Discrete negative refraction can be easily predicted from the sign of the coupling coefficient between adjacent waveguides, regardless of handedness of propagation.  相似文献

The feasibility of a modal phase matching scheme between optical modes and surface plasmonic modes is demonstrated: in fact, the high effective index of a plasmonic mode allows us to obtain phase matching even in semiconductors showing a large dispersion between fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths. We design a realistic device to obtain Type-II second harmonic generation in AlGaAs-based waveguides; whereas one of the two pumps is carried by a plasmonic mode, the generated second harmonic signal is guided inside the AlGaAs multilayer, and hence it is not hampered by high propagation losses.  相似文献

We propose a time domain bidirectional beam propagation method based on scattering operators for wide band pulse propagation in nonlinear multilayers. Excitation and propagation of spatial solitary waves due to three-wave mixing in quadratic non-linear media lead to a rich variety of interesting phenomena some of which have already experimental evidence. Analytical and numerical modelling plays a key role in gaining insight in the experimental data, in completing the theoretical understanding of the process and in predicting new possible applications. In this context, we present an extensive analytical and numerical study on the multi-parameter family of vectorial spatial solitary waves in bulk quadratic crystals. We focus our attention particularly on the threshold energy necessary to drive solitary waves on available crystals exhibiting a second order non-linearity and in describing how this threshold depends on the crystal parameters.  相似文献

By employing an iterative procedure based on a bidirectional beam propagation method with perfectly matched layers, we develop a numerical algorithm to model light propagation in engineered multilayered nonlinear waveguides. We investigated the interaction of discrete solitons with defect states fabricated in arrays of coupled waveguides. We achieved attractive and repulsive defects by decreasing and increasing, respectively, the spacing of one pair of waveguides in an otherwise uniform array. Linear and nonlinear propagation in the same samples show distinctly different properties. The role of the Peierls-Nabarro potential in the interaction of the soliton with the defect is discussed.  相似文献
