Lasting chemiluminescence of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride and its enhancement.

The chemiluminescence (CL) intensities of various indole derivatives substituted with a glyoxylyl group at the 3-position and a hydroxyl group at the 5-position of the indole ring were compared upon the addition of H2O2 in alkaline media. The CL intensities of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride, 3-indoleglyoxylic acid, 5-hydroxyindole and 5-benzyloxyindole in CH3CN were 5.9-, 48-, 5.9- and 3.3-fold stronger than that of 3-methylindole. A lasting CL of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride was found. Under appropriate conditions, the CL emission reached a maximum within 10 min after the addition of H2O2 in the presence of NaOH, and the intensity was retained for 25 min. One of the final products via the CL reaction of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride was indole-3-carboxylic acid. 3-Indoleglyoxylyl chloride emitted light by decompositions via both dioxetane and dioxetanedione. An enhancement effect of beta-cyclodextrin and bovine serum albumin on the CL of 3-indoleglyoxylyl chloride was also found.     

Structure and enantioselective synthesis of polyamine toxin MG30 from the venom of the spider Macrothele gigas

A novel polyamine toxin, named MG30, was isolated from the venom of the spider, Macrothele gigas, and its structure was elucidated by two-dimensional NMR and mass analysis. In addition, the enantioselective synthesis of MG30 was achieved to assign its absolute stereochemistry.     

HPLC determination of (+)-pseudoephedrine and (-)-ephedrine in Japanese herbal medicines containing Ephedra herb using solid-phase extraction

We developed a rapid and simple HPLC method combined with solid-phase extraction (SPE) for quantitative analysis of (+)-pseudoephedrine (PEP) and (-)-ephedrine (EP) in Japanese herbal (Kampo) medicines such as Kakkon-to, Sho-seiryu-to, Goshaku-san and Bofu-tsusho-san. SPE was performed on TOYOPAK IC-SP M containing propylsulfonic groups. Determination of PEP and EP was carried out using ion-pair reversed-phase HPLC with sodium dodecyl sulfate. N-Benzyldiethylamine was used as an internal standard. The analytical procedure was validated with regard to specificity, linearity, accuracy, and precision. These data suggest that the analytical method developed in this study is useful for quantitative analysis of PEP and EP in various formulations of Kampo medicine containing Ephedra herb.     

The first synthesis of (±)-brevione B, an allelopathic agent isolated from Penicillium sp.

Breviones A∼E (1∼5), allelopathic agents isolated from Penicillium brevicompactum Dierckx, are structurally unique pentacyclic or hexacyclic diterpenoid derivatives. The first synthesis of brevione B (2) was achieved by employing the double S_N2′-type tandem reaction as a key step.     

Development of Odorless Thiols and Sulfides and Their Applications to Organic Synthesis

Summary. Development of new odorless thiols (dodecanethiol, 4-n-heptylphenylmethanethiol, 4-trimethylsilylphenylmethanethiol, 4-trimethylsilylbenzenethiol) and an odorless sulfide (1-methylsulfanyldodecane) and their applications to dealkylation, Michael addition, Swern oxidation, and Corey-Kim oxidation are described.     

Electron spin resonance of hydrogen-absorbed graphite-potassium intercalation compounds

The conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) of the graphite—potassium intercalation compounds, C₈ K and C₂₄ K, was studied in hydrogen gas. An enhancement of CESR absorption and a decrease in asymmetry parameter were observed for C₈K in the initial stage of hydrogen absorption, attributed to paramagnetic hydrogen atoms stabilized in the matrix of the compound.     

Preparation of Silica-Silk Fibroin-Polyurethane Composite Films via a Sol-Gel Route

A tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)-derived sol aged for 0 h–6 h at room temperature was mixed with a polyurethane (PU) matrix. A composite of silk fibroin (SF) powders and acrylamide (AAm) was dispersed in the sol-PU mixture and dried isothermally at temperatures between 25°C and 120°C to obtain composite films. Three competitive reactions take place, i.e., those between silica-silica, SF-PU and silica-organic phases, during formation of the composite films. These reactions determine the properties such as morphology and homogeneity of the composite films. IR absorption bands for amide groups (–CONH–), C=O (amide I, 1730 cm^–1) and N–H (amide II, 1530 cm^–1) become larger with decreasing aging time of TEOS-derived sol, or increasing drying temperature. DTA exothermic peak due to the thermal decomposition of SF-AAm composite, on the composite films prepared from the 0 h-aged sol or dried at more than 50°C, shifts toward higher temperature by 44 K or more than 63 K respectively, as compared to the SF-AAm composite. Shorter aging time of TEOS-derived sol and higher drying temperature increased the extent of dispersibility, among SF-AAm composite, PU and silica, to bring a composite film more homogeneous.     

New odorless method for the Corey-Kim and Swern oxidations utilizing dodecyl methyl sulfide (Dod-S-Me)

Development of the odorless dodecyl methyl sulfide (Dod-S-Me, 1) as an alternative for dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and new odorless methods for the Corey-Kim and Swern oxidations are described. These reactions have been developed with a view toward green chemistry, utilizing Dod-S-Me (1) and common solvents instead of dichloromethane.
