THE PHOTOSENSITIZED FORMATION AND REACTION OF SINGLET OXYGEN, O2*(1Δ), IN AQUEOUS MICELLAR SYSTEMS

Abstract— Oxygenated aqueous solutions of methylene blue containing dispersions of sodium dodecyl sulphate micelles with solubilised diphenyl isobenzofuran were irradiated with red light and the rate of loss of furan was followed over several min. The results are consistent with a mechanism in which singlet oxygen is produced by energy transfer from methylene blue triplet in the aqueous phase, and then diffuses to and penetrates the interior of the micelles where it reacts with the furan. The competition between this process and the natural decay of the excited oxygen has been examined and a β-value of 9.7 times 10^-5 M determined which is comparable to that for the same reaction in homogeneous solvents. A model of the system is proposed and its kinetic features discussed.     

Vectorial Approach to Fast Correlation Attacks

A new, vectorial approach to fast correlation attacks on binary memoryless combiners is proposed. Instead of individual input sequences or their linear combinations, the new attack is targeting subsets of input sequences as a whole thus exploiting the full correlation between the chosen subset and the output sequence. In particular, the set of all the input sequences can be chosen as the target. The attack is based on a novel iterative probabilistic algorithm which is also applicable to general memoryless combiners over finite fields or finite rings. To illustrate the effectiveness of the introduced approach, experimental results obtained for random balanced combining functions are presentedMost of this work was done while he was with Rome CryptoDesign Center, Gemplus, Italy     

On the Motion of a Dynamic System with Minimal Dissipation

The motion of a holonomic scleronomic non-conservative mechanicalsystem with minimal dissipation is considered. As applicationsof the theory several problems are studied in detail.     

Large nonlinear phase shif towing to cascaded chi((2)) in quasi-phase-matched bulk LiNbO(3)

Large nonresonant effective nonlinear indices that are due to cascading have been observed by Z-scan and CCD camera measurements performed on quasi-phase-matched LiNbO(3). Positive and negative values of n(cascad)(2) were measured at temperatures symmetrically displayed with respect to the optimum phase-matching temperatures (2.39 x 10(-13) and -2.37 x 10(-13)cm(2)/W, respectively).     

Second-harmonic generation in a doubly resonant semiconductor microcavity

We demonstrate second-harmonic generation in a doubly resonant semiconductor microcavity. The monolithic cavity consists of an AlGaAs active medium sandwiched between two AlGaAs/AlAs dual-wavelength mirrors. The mirrors do not have any apparent periodicity because, unlike single- or dual-wavelength Bragg reflectors, they are engineered with dispersion taken into account. Quasi-phase matching is obtained by addition of the appropriate phases at reflection so as to compensate for the dephasing between the fundamental and the second-harmonic fields.     

Fusion around the barrier for 7Li+12C

Fusion cross-sections for the ⁷Li + ¹²C reaction have been measured at energies above the Coulomb barrier by the direct detection of evaporation residues. The heavy evaporation residues with energies below 3 MeV could not be separated out from the α-particles in the spectrum and hence their contribution was estimated using statistical model calculations. The present work indicates that suppression of fusion cross-sections due to the breakup of ⁷Li may not be significant for ⁷Li + ¹²C reaction at energies around the barrier.
