A review of otoacoustic emissions   总被引:32,自引:0,他引:32
Otoacoustic emissions measured in the external ear canal describe responses that the cochlea generates in the form of acoustic energy. For the convenience of discussing their principal features, emitted responses can be classified into several categories according to the type of stimulation used to evoke them. On this basis, four distinct but interrelated classes can be distinguished including spontaneous, transiently evoked, stimulus-frequency, and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions. The present review details the findings that have been described for each emission type according to this classification schema. Additionally, the known features of emitted responses are discussed for both normally hearing and hearing-impaired humans and experimental animals, and with respect to their potential clinical applications. The findings reviewed here clearly indicate that future studies of otoacoustic emissions will significantly increase our understanding of the basic mechanisms of cochlear function while, at the same time, provide a new and important clinical tool.  相似文献

In a previous report, it was shown that, in normal rabbit ears, the amplitude and phase of 2f1-f2 distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) elicited by low-level (< 60-70 dB SPL) stimuli display a differential dependence on stimulus parameters to those evoked by high-level (> 60-70 dB SPL) stimuli, indicating differences in the underlying generation mechanisms. In the present study, the physiological vulnerability of DPOAEs in each of the two 2f1-f2 DPOAE-response regions identified on the basis of differential parametric properties, was characterized. Thus emissions evoked using stimulus levels from 45-75 dB SPL were measured over time upon: (1) induction of lethal anoxia, (2) acute injection of ethacrynic acid, and (3) acute injection of ethacrynic acid 2 h after a single administration of gentamicin. The DPOAEs evoked by low-level stimuli (45 dB SPL) were abolished within 3-4 min of induction of anoxia, whereas DPOAEs evoked by high-level stimuli (75 dB SPL) were unchanged in this period. The high-level emissions decreased with a complex time course postmortem, and demonstrated behaviors, including evidence of susceptibility to fatigue, suggesting a dependence upon a cochlear energy supply. Low-level DPOAEs could be temporarily abolished, with complete recovery, by an acute administration of ethacrynic acid that had little effect on high-level DPOAEs. Treatment with the gentamicin and ethacrynic-acid combination, which would be expected to produce widespread hair-cell damage, eliminated low-level DPOAEs, and greatly reduced high-level emissions. In combination with previously published data, these findings strongly suggest that low- and high-level 2f1-f2 DPOAEs arise from discrete sources. The data are consistent with the proposal that the low-level DPOAE source is an active, micromechanical process, but suggest that the proposed origin of high-level DPOAEs exclusively in the passive macromechanics of the cochlear partition may be incorrect. The elimination of both low- and high-level DPOAEs revealed the presence of a third, residual 2f1-f2 DPOAE component, approximately 75-80 dB below the stimulus-tone levels, that may reflect the true passive-distortion response of the cochlea.  相似文献

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectra were obtained from single biological aerosol particles using an aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ATOFMS). The inlet to the ATOFMS was coupled with an evaporation/condensation flow cell that allowed the aerosol to be coated with matrix material as the sampled stream entered the spectrometer. Mass spectra were generated from aerosol composed either of gramicidin-S or erythromycin, two small biological molecules, or from aerosolised spores of Bacillus subtilis var niger. Three different matrices were used: 3-nitrobenzyl alcohol, picolinic acid and sinapinic acid. A spectrum of gramicidin-S was generated from approximately 250 attomoles of material using a molar ratio of 3-nitrobenzyl alcohol to analyte of approximately 20:1. A single peak, located at 1224 Da, was obtained from the bacterial spores. The washing liquid and extract solution from the spores were analyzed using electrospray mass spectrometry and subsequent MS/MS product ion experiments. This independent analysis suggests that the measured species represents part of the B. subtilis peptidoglycan. The on-line addition of matrix allows quasi-real-time chemical analysis of individual, aerodynamically sized particles, with an overall system residence time of less than 5 seconds. These results suggest that a MALDI-ATOFMS can provide nearly real-time identification of biological aerosols. Copyright 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Suppression and/or enhancement of third- and fifth-order distortion products by a third tone that can have a frequency more than an octave above and a level more than 40 dB below the primary tones have recently been measured by Martin et al. [Hear. Res. 136, 105-123 (1999)]. Contours of iso-suppression and iso-enhancement that are plotted as a function of third-tone frequency and level are called interference response areas. After ruling out order aliasing, two possible mechanisms for this effect have been developed, a harmonic mechanism and a catalyst mechanism. The harmonic mechanism produces distortion products by mixing a harmonic of one of the primary tones with the other primary tone. The catalyst mechanism produces distortion products by mixing one or more intermediate distortion products that are produced by the third tone with one or more of the input tones. The harmonic mechanism does not need a third tone and the catalyst mechanism does. Because the basilar membrane frequency response is predicted to affect each of these mechanisms differently, it is concluded that the catalyst mechanism will be dominant in the high-frequency regions of the cochlea and the harmonic mechanism will have significant strength in the low-frequency regions of the cochlea. The mechanisms are dependent on the existence of both even- and odd-order distortion, and significant even- and odd-order distortion have been measured in the experimental animals. Furthermore, the nonlinear part of the cochlear mechanical response must be well into saturation when input tones are 50 or more dB SPL.  相似文献

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured with traditional DP-grams and level/phase (L/P) maps in rabbits with either normal cochlear function or unique sound-induced cochlear losses that were characterized as either low-frequency or notched configurations. To demonstrate that emission generators distributed basal to the f(2) primary-tone contribute, in general, to DPOAE levels and phases, a high-frequency interference tone (IT) was presented at 1/3 of an octave (oct) above the f(2) primary-tone, and DPOAEs were re-measured as "augmented" DP-grams (ADP-grams) and L/P maps. The vector difference between the control and augmented functions was then computed to derive residual DP-grams (RDP-grams) and L/P maps. The resulting RDP-grams and L/P maps, which described the DPOAEs removed by the IT, supported the notion that basal DPOAE components routinely contribute to the generation of standard measures of DPOAEs. Separate experiments demonstrated that these components could not be attributed to the effects of the 1/3-oct IT on f(2), or DPOAEs generated by the addition of a third interfering tone. These basal components can "fill in" the lesion estimated by the commonly employed DP-gram. Thus, ADP-grams more accurately reveal the pattern of cochlear damage and may eventually lead to an improved DP-gram procedure.  相似文献

A new analytical Liouville-space representation of the time-propagator under magic angle spinning (MAS) is introduced using the formalized quantum Floquet theory. This approach has the advantage that it is applicable to the analysis of any type of NMR experiment where MAS is combined with multiple-pulse excitation. General relationships describing the spectral parameters in multiple-quantum (MQ) MAS spectra are derived in this representation. Their use is illustrated with an application to double-quantum (DQ) NMR spectra of dipolar-coupled multi-spin systems. Corresponding to the separation of the MAS time-propagator into a rotor modulated and a dephasing component, two distinct mechanisms for DQ excitation are identified. One of them exploits the rotor-modulated component to excite DQ coherences through dipolar-recoupling techniques, which are familiar for spin pairs. Analytical expressions of the integral intensities and linewidths in the resulting DQ sideband pattern are derived in the form of power series expansions of the inverse rotor frequency, of which coefficients depend on structural parameters. In a multi-spin system they can most reliably be extracted in the fast spinning regime. The other mechanism exploits the dephasing component, which is characteristic to multi-spin systems only. This is shown to give rise to DQ coherences by free evolution at full rotor periods. The possibility to exploit it for selective excitation of higher order MQ coherences is discussed. In either case, the dephasing component also leads to residual broadening. The main results of the theoretical developments are demonstrated experimentally on adamantane.  相似文献

Background

The hippocampus is essential for declarative memory synthesis and is a core pathological substrate for Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common aging-related dementing disease. Acute increases in plasma cortisol are associated with transient hippocampal inhibition and retrograde amnesia, while chronic cortisol elevation is associated with hippocampal atrophy. Thus, cortisol levels could be monitored and managed in older people, to decrease their risk of AD type hippocampal dysfunction. We generated an in silicomodel of the chronic effects of elevated plasma cortisol on hippocampal activity and atrophy, using the systems biology mark-up language (SBML). We further challenged the model with biologically based interventions to ascertain if cortisol associated hippocampal dysfunction could be abrogated.  相似文献

The effects of primary-tone separation on the amplitude of distortion-product emissions (DPEs) at the 2f1-f2 frequency were systematically examined in ten ears of five subjects. All individuals had normal hearing and middle-ear function based upon standard clinical measures. Acoustic-distortion products were elicited at 1, 2.5, and 4 kHz by equilevel primaries at 65, 75, and 85 dB SPL, while f2/f1 ratios were varied in 0.02 increments from 1.01-1.41 (4 kHz), 1.01-1.59 (2.5 kHz), or 1.01-1.79 (1 kHz). A principal outcome reflected in the detailed structure of both average and individual ratio functions was a nonmonotonic change in DPE amplitude as the ratio of f2/f1 increased. Despite the presence of amplitude nonmonotonicities, there was clearly a region of f1 and f2 separation that generated a maximum DPE. The effects of primary-tone separation on DPE amplitudes were systematically related to DPE frequency and primary-tone level. For all three levels of stimulation, the f2/f1 ratio was inversely related to DPE frequency. Thus larger ratios reflecting a greater separation of f1 and f2 were more effective in generating DPEs at 1 kHz rather than at 4 kHz. The optimal ratio for 2.5 kHz fell at an intermediate value. Conversely, acoustic distortion-product amplitude as a function of primary-tone level was directly related to the frequency separation of the primary tones. Regardless of the frequency region of the primary tones, smaller f2/f1 ratios were superior in generating DPEs in response to 65-dB stimuli, whereas larger ratios elicited bigger DPEs with primaries at 75 and 85 dB SPL. Within any specific stimulus-parameter combination, individual variability in DPE amplitude was noted. When all stimulus conditions describing the variations in frequency and level were considered, an f2/f1 ratio of 1.22 was most effective in maximizing DPE amplitude.  相似文献

Psychophysical, basilar-membrane (BM), and single nerve-fiber tuning curves, as well as suppression of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), all give rise to frequency tuning patterns with stereotypical features. Similarities and differences between the behaviors of these tuning functions, both in normal conditions and following various cochlear insults, have been documented. While neural tuning curves (NTCs) and BM tuning curves behave similarly both before and after cochlear insults known to disrupt frequency selectivity, DPOAE suppression tuning curves (STCs) do not necessarily mirror these responses following either administration of ototoxins [Martin et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 104, 972-983 (1998)] or exposure to temporarily damaging noise [Howard et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 111, 285-296 (2002)]. However, changes in STC parameters may be predictive of other changes in cochlear function such as cochlear immaturity in neonatal humans [Abdala, Hear. Res. 121, 125-138 (1998)]. To determine the effects of noise-induced permanent auditory dysfunction on STC parameters, rabbits were exposed to high-level noise that led to permanent reductions in DPOAE level, and comparisons between pre- and postexposure DPOAE levels and STCs were made. Statistical comparisons of pre- and postexposure STC values at CF revealed consistent basal shifts in the frequency region of greatest cochlear damage, whereas thresholds, Q10dB, and tip-to-tail gain values were not reliably altered. Additionally, a large percentage of high-frequency lobes associated with third tone interference phenomena, that were exhibited in some data sets, were dramatically reduced following noise exposure. Thus, previously described areas of DPOAE interference above f2 may also be studied using this type of experimental manipulation [Martin et al., Hear. Res. 136, 105-123 (1999); Mills, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 2586-2602 (2002)].  相似文献

The results of studies of the physiological vulnerability of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) suggest that the DPOAE at 2f1-f2 in vertebrate ears is generated by more than one source. The principal aims of the present study were to provide independent evidence for the existence of more than one DPOAE source, and to determine the contributions of each to the ear-canal 2f1-f2 signal. To accomplish these aims, specific stimulus parameters were separately and systematically varied to provide detailed parametric information regarding 2f1-f2 DPOAE amplitude and phase in normal ears of awake rabbits. The findings indicate that two discrete sources, demonstrating differential dependence on stimulus parameters, dominate the generation of the 2f1-f2 DPOAE. One source of distortion is dominant above 60-70 dB SPL at moderate primary-frequency separations, and at all stimulus levels when the primary tones are closely spaced. The other source is dominant below 60-70 dB SPL at moderate primary-frequency separations, and may be dominant at all stimulus levels when the primary tones are widely separated in frequency. The results suggest that by varying stimulus parameters, it may be possible to independently study the two generator mechanisms.  相似文献
