Topotactic oxidation of TiGaPO-1, a pyridine-templated titanium gallophosphate with a new octahedral-tetrahedral 3-D framework structure containing Ti(III)/Ti(IV)

The first 3-D open-framework TiGaPO complex, constructed from Ti(III)O(6), Ti(IV)O(6), GaO(4), and PO(4) polyhedra, contains pyridinium cations in a 1-D pore network and can be oxidized in air at 543 K with retention of the original framework structure.     

Isolation and Crystal Structure of Novel by-products Observed During the Formation of bis(thiosemicarbazones)

During the condensation of 4-methyl-4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide (3) with 2,3-butanedione an unexpected by-product, 8a-methyl-6,8a-dihydro-8-methyl-2-[N-methyl-N-phenylamino]-5H-1,3,4-thiadiazolo[3,2-d][1,2,4]triazine-5-thione, (5) was obtained in addition to the desired bis(thiosemicarbazone) (4). An X-ray crystal structure was obtained and is presented together with a proposed mechanism for its formation. A brief investigation of the coordination chemistry of bicycle (5) was carried out. The formation of cyclic compounds during the synthesis of analogues with extended backbones is also described.     

The determination of lead in environmental samples by slurry atomization-graphite furnace-atomic absorption spectrophotometry using matrix modification

Lead has been determined in three certified reference materials (aquatic plant, olive leaves, and mussel tissue) by direct slurry atomization-graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The importance of using ascorbic acid as matrix modifier has been demonstrated, particularly to overcome calcium interferences. Using 0.05 M ascorbic acid and aqueous calibration standards excellent agreement was found with certified values. The method is proposed for general application in environmental analysis.     

Synthesis, crystal structure, and nonlinear optical behavior of beta-unsubstituted meso-meso E-vinylene-linked porphyrin dimers

[structure: see text] A vinylene-linked porphyrin dimer, with no substituents at the beta-positions, has been synthesized by CuI/CsF promoted Stille coupling. In the crystal structure of this dimer, the C(2)H(2) bridge is twisted by 45 degrees relative to the plane of the porphyrins. The absorption, emission spectra, and electrochemistry reveal substantial porphyrin-porphyrin pi-conjugation. The triplet excited-state absorption spectrum of this dimer makes it suitable for reverse saturable absorption at 710-900 nm.
