Tilt of atomic force microscope cantilevers: effect on spring constant and adhesion measurements

In atomic force microscopy, the cantilevers are mounted under a certain tilt angle alpha with respect to the sample surface. In this paper, we show that this increases the effective spring constant by typically 10-20%. The effective spring constant of a rectangular cantilever of length L can be obtained by dividing the measured spring constant by cos2 alpha(1 - 2D tan alpha/L). Here, alpha is the tilt angle and D is the size of the tip. In colloidal probe experiments, D has to be replaced by the radius of the attached particle. To determine the effect of tilt experimentally, the adhesion force between spherical borosilicate particles and planar silicon oxide surfaces was measured at tilt angles between 0 degrees and 35 degrees. The experiments revealed a significant decrease of the mean apparent adhesion force with a tilt of typically 20-30% at alpha = 20 degrees. In addition, they demonstrate that the adhesion depends drastically on the precise position of contact on the particle surface.     

On images of locally finite derivations and E-derivations

Some cases of the LFED Conjecture, proposed by the second author [15], for certain integral domains are proved. In particular, the LFED Conjecture is completely established for the field of fractions $k(x)$ of the polynomial algebra $k[x]$, the formal power series algebra $k[[x]]$ and the Laurent formal power series algebra $k[[x]][x^{?1}]$, where $x=(x_1,x_2,\dots ,x_n)$ denotes n commutative free variables and k a field of characteristic zero. Furthermore, the relation between the LFED Conjecture and the Duistermaat–van der Kallen Theorem [3] is also discussed and emphasized.

Loss of ferromagnetism in YNi3 after H2 absorption

The compound YNi₃ ($\text{PuNi}{}_3\text{-}\text{type}\text{,}\text{a}\text{= 4.973}\text{A}\text{?}\text{,}\text{c}\text{= 24.42}\text{A}\text{?}$) is ferromagnetic below T_c = 35 K. After hydrogen absorption it loses its ferromagnetic character and becomes Pauli paramagnetic. The composition of the ternary hydride is approximately YNi₃H₄. The lattice constants are $\text{a}\text{= 5.267}\text{A}\text{?}$, $\text{c}\text{= 26.57}\text{A}\text{?}$.

This paper studies coordinates in two variables over a -algebra. It gives several ways to characterize such coordinates. Also, various results about coordinates in two variables that were previously only known for fields, are extended to arbitrary -algebras.

     

Evaluation of sulfur, selenium and tellurium catalysts with antioxidant potential

Oxidative stress is implicated, either directly or indirectly, in the pathology of a range of human diseases. As a consequence, the development of efficient antioxidants for medical use has become increasingly important. We have synthesised a range of structurally related organo-sulfur, -selenium and -tellurium agents and demonstrated that a combination of electrochemical methodology, in vitro assays and cell culture tests can be used to rationalise the antioxidant activity of these catalytic agents. Based on its exceptionally low anodic oxidation potential (Epa) and high activity against the representative oxidative stressors tert-butyl hydroperoxide and peroxynitrite, 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyltelluride is predicted to be a potent antioxidant. This compound exhibits a correspondingly high activity with a remarkably low IC50 value of 20 nM, when tested in PC12 cell culture using a bioassay indicative of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.
