Numerical methods were used to study distortion of the space-time characteristics of an optical pulse due to refraction over inclined paths in atmospheric absorption lines in the case where the width of the pulse spectrum is comparable to the width of the absorption line. The calculations involved use of a model of the winter and summer atmosphere in the middle latitudes and the absorption lines of water vapor in the visible and near infrared regions. Here, allowance was made for laws governing the change in the width, central frequency, and form of the contour of the absorption line with altitude. This study predicts the manifestation of anisotropic properties in linearly isotropic inhomogeneous resonant media during the propagation of optical pulses through them with pulse durations comparable to the phase memory of the medium. For examples, the energy of an obliquely incident pulse propagating through a layered inhomogeneous medium, varies with inversion of the propagation direction. This effect results from phase modulation of the pulse duse to variation in refraction in a region of transient coherent processes in the medium. Numerical methods are used to investigate the characteristics of soliton formation when optical pulses of arbitrary shape and duration propagate in resonantly absorbing media of large optical thickness. It is shown that a regime of soliton propagation in a resonant medium, characterized by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation model, changes to a self-induced transparency regime. Incoherent steady-state interaction conditions are then replaced by coherent interaction. This effect can be utilized to compress laser pulses.V. D. Optical spectra of vibrational-rotational absorption bands of atmospheric water vapor are interpreted in terms of fractal analysis. The main calculation parameter is the lacunarity of the initial spectrum.
