Zero-cycles on self-product of modular curves

We use the elements in K-cohomology groups which are constructed by Flach and Mildenhall to obtain a finiteness result for the torsion part of the Chow group of a self-product of a modular curve.     

Determination of midodrine in human plasma by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.

A simple and sensitive fluorometric high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the determination of midodrine in human plasma. After liquid-liquid extraction from plasma, the drug and 2-phenylglycinol (internal standard) were convened into the corresponding fluorescent derivatives by reaction with 3,4-dihydro-6,7-dimethoxy-4-methyl-3-oxoquinoxaline-2-carbonyl chloride, a fluorescence derivatization reagent for amines. The derivatives were separated within 30 min on a reversed-phase column using isocratic elution with acetonitrile-methanol-water (10:30:60, v/v) and were detected spectrofluorometrically at 485 nm with excitation at 400 nm. The detection limit for midodrine was 0.3 pmol (76 pg) per mL plasma at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.     

Photocarrier injection and the I-V characteristics of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/SrTiO3:Nb heterojunctions

Oxide heterojunctions made of p-type La_0.8Sr_0.2MnO₃ (LSMO) and niobium-doped n-type SrTiO₃ (STO:Nb) have been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique and characterized under UV light irradiation by measuring the current-voltage, photovoltaic properties and the junction capacitance. It is shown that the heterojunctions work as an efficient UV photodiode, in which photogenerated holes in the STO:Nb substrate are injected to the LSMO film. The maximum surface hole density Q/e and external quantum efficiency γ are estimated to be 8.3×10¹² cm⁻² and 11% at room temperature, respectively. They are improved significantly in a p-i-n junction of LSMO/STO/STO:Nb, where Q/e and γ are 3.0×10¹³ cm⁻² and 27%, respectively.     

Magnetisation reversal in media with perpendicular anisotropy

In this paper, we discuss two key aspects of magnetisation reversal in magnetic thin films with perpendicular anisotropy. Firstly, a study has been made of the additional field required to erase data written perpendicular to a thin film recording disk as the linear data density is increased. It has been found that an increase in data density from 40 to 360 kfci results in an increase of 1.25 kOe in the field required to erase the data. Secondly, the effect of varying the level of exchange coupling by co-sputtering CoCrPt samples with SiO₂ has been studied using a characterisation technique that is independent of the self-demagnetising field. It has been found that the samples are fully exchange de-coupled when the film contains >9.8% SiO₂ and the activation volume of reversal remains constant for higher levels of SiO₂.     

Regulation of lithospermic acid B and shikonin production in Lithospermum erythrorhizon cell suspension cultures

Cell suspension cultures of Lithospermum erythrorhizon produced a large amount of lithospermic acid B, a caffeic acid tetramer, as well as shikonin derivatives (each ca. 10% of dry wt.) when cultured in shikonin production medium M-9. Various culture factors for increasing the production of lithospermic acid B were investigated. Lithospermic acid B production was inhibited by 2, 4-D or NH4+, whereas it was stimulated by Cu2+. These regulatory patterns were similar to those for the production of shikonin derivatives in these cell cultures, suggestive of close relations and similar metabolic regulation between the production of these compounds. Cultivation under light illumination, however, showed that these metabolisms were independently regulated. In particular, blue light showed a stimulatory effect on lithospermic acid B production, while shikonin production was strongly inhibited, indicative of an effective condition for lithospermic acid B production.     

Diversity-oriented synthesis of tamoxifen-type tetrasubstituted olefins

A general synthetic scheme for tamoxifen-type tetrasubstituted olefins based on the novel Cu-catalyzed carbomagnesation across alkynyl(2-pyridyl)silane has been developed. A wide array of electronically and structurally diverse tetrasubstituted olefins can be prepared in a regiocontrolled, stereocontrolled, and diversity-oriented manner. Noteworthy features are that (i) the three aryl groups, which are believed to be important (essential) for anti-estrogenic activity, can be varied at will because they all stem from readily available aryl iodides, and (ii) any stereo- and regioisomers can, in principle, be prepared by simply changing the applying order of aryl iodides into the sequence.     

Formation of ice nanotube with hydrophobic guests inside carbon nanotube

A composite ice nanotube inside a carbon nanotube has been explored by molecular-dynamics and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. It is made from an octagonal ice nanotube whose hollow space contains hydrophobic guest molecules such as neon, argon, and methane. It is shown that the attractive interaction of the guest molecules stabilizes the ice nanotube. The guest occupancy of the hollow space is calculated by the same method as applied to clathrate hydrates.     

DNA PHOTOREACTIVATING ENZYME FROM SILKWORM

An ammonium-sulfate-precipitable (33–70%) fraction in extracts from eggs of silkworm Bombyx mori contains photoreactivating enzyme that reactivates the transforming activity of UV inactivated Hemophilus influenzae DNA. The action spectrum for in vitro photoreactivation with the enzyme has a broad peak around 365–385 nm, with a shoulder extending to 460 nm. This relatively higher photoreactivation efficiency at wavelengths longer than 450 nm seems to be a unique feature of DNA photoreactivating enzyme of silkworm. Using gel filtration, a mol wt of 42,000 was estimated for the enzyme. Optimum and isoionic pH of the enzyme were 7.2 and 5.4, respectively. These properties of silkworm enzyme are within the range of variations in reported biochemical characteristics of photoreactivating enzymes from different species.     

Copper-catalyzed allylation of carbonyl derivatives using allyl(2-pyridyl)silanes

[reaction: see text] We have developed an efficient copper-catalyzed allylation of carbonyl derivatives using allyl(2-pyridyl)silanes, in which the strong directing effect of the 2-pyridyl group was observed. A useful synthesis and allylation of substituted allyl(2-pyridyl)silanes is also described.
