Associated φΛ0 production in the EXCHARM experiment

The features of the associated production of φ mesons with Λ⁰ hyperons in neutron-carbon interactions were investigated. The experiment was performed with the aid of the EXCHARM spectrometer at the Serpukhov accelerator in a neutron beam of energy in the interval 20–70 GeV. The differential cross section for inclusive associated φΛ⁰ production was measured.     

On the observation of direct <Emphasis Type="Italic">CP</Emphasis> violation in neutral kaon decays

A series of precision experiments on measuring the parameter Re(ε′/ε) in neutral-kaon decays is described. The experiments performed at CERN and Fermilab unambiguously prove the existence of direct CP violation in nature. The comparison between these experiments and the corresponding approaches to solving the formulated problem made it possible to reveal the advantages of different techniques in achieving maximum measurement accuracy.     

Associated production of ϕ mesons and neutral kaons in the EXCHARM experiment

The features of the associated production of ? mesons and neutral kaons are studied on the basis of data obtained at the EXCHARM spectrometer (Serpukhov accelerator) in neutron—carbon interactions at neutron-beam energies in the range 20–70 GeV. The cross section for the inclusive associated production of ? and K ⁰/-K ⁰ is obtained. The fraction of processes allowed by the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule is estimated in the reactions of ?-meson inclusive production.     

Lattice vibrations of AsxP1−xIn solid solutions

On the basis of investigations of reflection spectra from As_xP_1?xIn solid solutions, new data have been obtained on the character of the vibrational spectrum for compositions in which x is, 0, 0·2, 0·3, 0·4, 0·5, 0·6, 0·8, 0·9 and 1. The variation of the frequencies and oscillator strengths that characterize As and P atom vibrations has been determined as a function of composition. From the comparison of calculated with experimental reflection spectra, the dispersion of the real part (∈₁) and the imaginary part (∈₂) of the dielectric constants of the substance as well as |∈| have been estimated. The values of the nonlocal and local parts of the effective ion charge of InAs and InP were also determined.     

Progress in development of Nuclotron accelerator complex

The Nuclotron superconducting synchrotron was constructed in 1987–1992 [1]; it is the world’s first synchrotron based on fast cycling “window frame” electromagnets with a superconducting coil. For a design field of dipole magnets of 2 T, the magnetic rigidity is 45 T m, which corresponds to the energy of heavy nuclei (for example, gold) of 4.5 GeV/nucleon. The Nuclotron accelerator complex is currently being upgraded (the Nuclotron-M project); this upgrade is considered a key part of the first stage of fulfilling the new Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) project: the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility and Multi-Purpose Detector (NICA/MPD). The most important task of this new project is the preparation of basic Nuclotron systems for its reliable operation as part of the NICA accelerator complex. Basic results of activity on the project, which started in 2007, are presented and the results of the last Nuclotron runs are analyzed.     

New type of drift tubes for gas-discharge detectors operating in vacuum: Production technology and quality control

A device for fabricating thin-wall (straw) drift tubes using polyethylene terephthalate film 36 μm thick by ultrasonic welding is described together with the technique for controlling their quality. The joint width amounts to 0.4–1.0 mm. The joint breaking strength is 31.9 kg/mm². The argon leakage from a tube of volume 188.6 cm³ under a pressure gradient of 1.0 atm does not exceed 0.3 × 10^–3 cm³/min, which is mainly related to the absence of metallization in the joint vicinity. The high strength, the low tensile creep due to the absence of glued layers, the small value of gas leakage makes the new tubes capable of reliable and long-term operation in vacuum, which is confirmed by the operation of 7168 straw tubes for two years in the NA62 experiment.     

Full-scale prototype of the circular track detector for the multipurpose detector facility at the NICA acceleration complex

The development of the NICA heavy ion collider, which is now under way, assumes the development of a Multipurpose Detector (MPD), including an end-cap tracker (EC) (which can be a wheel-type tracker based on thin-wall drift tubes (straws) similar to the inner detector of the transition radiation tracker (TRT) in the ATLAS experiment). The identical front and back tracker modules mounted behind the TPC are to ensure the detection of Au-Au ion collision products in the pseudorapidity range from 1.4 to 2.1 with good track parameters of reconstructed events. Each module will contain 60 circular straw planes and maximum straw occupancy will be no higher than 0.2 particle per collision. The NICA EC is substantially different from its analogue and requires a certain amount of R&D. The first results from applying new technology to make a full-scale prototype of the circular EC detector for NICA are presented.

Transition radiation detectors—“B” trackers manufactured at JINR for ATLAS LHC inner detector

The results of the creation of a transition radiation detector—a “B” tracker on the basis of thin-walled drift tubes (straw tubes) for the inner detector of the ATLAS Large Hadron Collider (LHC)—are presented. The results of preliminary detector testing are described. The basic components and procedures of assembly for 17 eight-layer TRT modules manufactured at JINR are described.
