A reconfigurable wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) add/drop multiplexer (WADM) is constructed using optical switches (OSWS) and fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs). Selected one or two channel(s) can be added/dropped at the same multiplexer by properly controlling the optical switch pair and fibre Bragg grating arrangement. Afour-channel system is experimentally demonstrated for a data rate of 2.5 Gb s–1 and a single-mode fibre (SMF) distance of 100km. A negligible maximum power penalty of only 0.3dB is observed when compared with back-to-back transmission.  相似文献

Polarization control is used in a tri-directional wavelength-reused system to reduce the power penalty caused by coherent mixing of the signal with Rayleigh backscattering noise. For a 25 + 25 km, 10 Gb/s tri-directional transmission system, the power penalty is 4.0 dB under the worst polarization control and could be reduced to 0.4 dB under optimal polarization control. The experimental results show that reusing the same wavelength is an efficient and promising method for tri-directional lightwave systems.  相似文献

Based on first-order perturbation theory of the soliton, the Gordon-Haus timing jitter induced by amplifier noise is found to be non-Gaussian distributed. Both frequency and timing jitter have larger tail probabilities than Gaussian distribution given by the linearized perturbation theory. The timing jitter has a larger discrepancy from Gaussian distribution than does the frequency jitter.  相似文献

The performance of differential phase-shift keying signals with a balanced receiver is exactly analyzed by using a closed-form expression without approximation. The numerical results are well matched with previous results based on the saddle-point approximation. The error probability is calculated exactly using the well-known Marcum Q function.  相似文献

In electronic digital signal processing based optical communication systems, digital equalization for chromatic dispersion interacts with local oscillator phase noise to produce equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN). In addition to both phase and intensity noises, EEPN also induces timing jitter to the equalized signal. For a 100?Gbit/s quadrature-phase-shift keying signal with laser linewidth of 300?kHz, the timing jitter is up to 20% of the symbol interval for a transmission distance of 1500?km.  相似文献

The variance of nonlinear phase noise is analyzed by including the effect of intrachannel cross-phase modulation-induced nonlinear phase noise. Consistent with Ho and Wang [IEEE Photon. Technol. Lett.17, 1426 (2005)] for a lightwave transmission system but contrary to the conclusions of both Kumar [Opt. Lett.30, 3278 (2005)] and Green [Opt. Lett.28, 2455 (2003)] with different initial conditions, the variance of nonlinear phase noise does not decrease much with the increase of chromatic dispersion. The results are consistent with each other after a careful reexamination.  相似文献

We have constructed a low-cost, double-cavity erbium-doped fiber ring laser with a fiber Bragg grating and a 2×2 coupler. A high output power of 8.7 dBm and a signal-to-noise-floor ratio of 43 dB were demonstrated. This fiber grating ring laser is used as the light source for the 2.488 Gb/s transmission experiment through a 100 km single mode fiber. To our knowledge, this is the first time a fiber grating ring laser is being used as an externally modulated source for digital transmission.  相似文献

The asymptotic probability density of nonlinear phase noise, often called the Gordon-Mollenauer effect, is derived analytically when the number of fiber spans is large. Nonlinear phase noise is the summation of infinitely many independently distributed noncentral chi2 random variables with two degrees of freedom. The mean and the standard deviation of those random variables are both proportional to the square of the reciprocal of all odd natural numbers. Nonlinear phase noise can also be accurately modeled as the summation of a noncentral chi2 random variable with two degrees of freedom and a Gaussian random variable.  相似文献

We proposed and experimentally demonstrated two power-equalized erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) modules using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with various reflectivities for individual channels. The transmission type power-equalized EDFA module is low-cost for its simple design, while the reflection type power-equalized EDFA module can suppress most of the amplified spontaneous emission noise. Both consist of a bidirectional EDFA, a set of FBG chains with suitable reflectivities, and an optical isolator/optical circulator. They can find potential applications in wavelength division multiplexing lightwave transmission systems.  相似文献

A miniature-size erbium doped fibre amplifier (MS-EDFA) is constructed with a saturation power of 17.0 dBm and low noise figure of 5.2 dB using an uncooled pump laser. The MS-EDFA has achieved low polarization dependent gain, large signal gain and small signal gain of 0.05 dB, 15 dB (at Pin = +2 dBm) and 42 dB (at Pin = −30 dBm), respectively, with negligible temperature dependent gain. The dimension of MS-EDFA is only twice than a typical credit card.  相似文献
