Ultraviolet protection factors for clothing: an intercomparison of measurement systems

In recent years the need to standardize measurement protocols for quantifying the degree of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) protection provided by clothing has led to the introduction of a number of standards around the world. To date, these standards have specified spectral measurements of UVR transmission by clothing and fabrics. Development of a standard test method has become an important part of the testing process, and this article presents results from an intercomparison involving 10 independent testing laboratories and 11 different UVR transmission measurement instruments. In addition to comparing the measured ultraviolet protection factors (UPF), this intercomparison also incorporates detailed scan results from all 10 laboratories and highlights differences in performance of the various instruments in different wavelength regions. Careful examination of these differences can indicate where changes to the systems could be made to allow improvements both in equipment performance and in agreement of the final results. The variability in the measurements of UPF in this study suggest that the protection categories in standards may need to be broadened.     

Enantioenriched dihydropyrones from beta-lactone templates

[reaction: see text] Optically active 4-substituted 2-oxetanones provide conduits for preparing 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyrone heterocycles. Enantioenriched beta-lactones are prepared by asymmetric catalytic acyl halide-aldehyde cyclocondensation reactions. Hydrazone anion-mediated beta-lactone ring opening and ensuing cyclization-dehydroamination of the derived beta-ketohydrazone afford the desired dihydropyrones (68-81%). Optimized lactone ring-opening-cyclization reaction conditions render a variety of optically active 4-substituted-2-oxetanones as effective precursors to enantioenriched 2,3-dihydro-4H-pyrones.     

Blockcopolymers in microemulsions differential heats of solution and shift of the percolation temperature in W/O microemulsions

Solutions of blockcopolymers (POE-b-PI-b-POE) in fluids of interacting aqueous nanodroplets (W/O microemulsions) are studied. The interaction strength between the (pseudo) two components is measured by the shift of the percolation temperature relative to that of the pure microemulsion. A quantitative measure of the interaction, the differential heat of solution, is thermodynamically related to the slopes of the equilibrium temperature of the system with varying monomeric nanodroplet concentration and the experimental percolation line in the presence of copolymer.     

Pseudo-steady-state solutions for solidification in a wedge

Polubarinova-Kochina's analytical differential equation methodis used to determine the pseudo-steady-state solution to problemsinvolving the freezing (solidification) of wedges of liquidwhich are initially at their fusion temperature. In particular,we consider four distinct problems for wedges which are: freezingwith the same constant boundary temperature, freezing with thesame constant boundary heat fluxes, freezing with distinct constantboundary temperatures and freezing with distinct constant fluxesat the boundaries. For the last two problems, a Heun's differentialequation with an unknown singularity is derived, which in bothcases admits a particularly elegant simple solution for thespecial case when the wedge angle is . The moving boundariesobtained are shown pictorially.     

The crystalline state of methylene blue: a zoo of hydrates

A re-investigation of the crystalline state of methylene blue has led to the identification of five different hydrates with clearly distinct structures. These include the already known pentahydrate, a hydrate with 2.2-2.3 equivalents of water, two dihydrates, and a monohydrate. Contrary to older reports, no trihydrate was found. The preparation and characterization of the hydrates as well as the transformations between them are reported. The applied analytical methods include X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), thermogravimetry (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic water vapor sorption (DVS) and solution calorimetry (SolCal). A phase diagram of temperature vs. composition has been established, and the stability domains of the different hydrates as a function of water activity and temperature have been determined based on data from DSC, SolCal and suspension equilibration experiments. Four out of the five hydrates are thermodynamically stable within a certain range of temperature and humidity.     

On Negative Birefringence in Water-in-Oil Microemulsions

The occurrence of a negative birefringence in water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions has been substantiated and analyzed. The analysis is based on the well-established aqueous nanodroplet model of W/O microemulsions. In the particularly investigated water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT)/aliphatic oil systems, the AOT monolayer exhibits a negative induced intrinsic birefringence, which is brought about by the pronounced polarizability of the alkyl moiety of the AOT molecule approximately perpendicular to the direction of its permanent dipolement.
